To be deceived by Quaker oats

I also assumed that the Quaker oat sachets were different to the box of ‘rolled oats’ (the former are branded as quick cook, maybe more finely processed). An investigation reveals that they’re virtually identical, and that the big box is actually a con. What I assumed it would be is the third variety of oats depicted in this picture (M&S wholegrain oats), which are so clearly superior in texture etc..

AIBU? I thought ‘wholegrain rolled oats’ were the good stuff but clearly I’m wrong.

We get Morrisons own brand value version. According to DH who eats porridge (I don't like it) he says they are just as good as any others he's tried.

Back in "normal times" I used to keep a box of MOMA oats with cranberry and raisin (purple box, 5 portions) in my locker at work for after my spin class. Mix with boiling water then Microwave for 30 secs, stir and then another 30 secs. It came out all lovely and creamy.

Nottherealslimshady · 27/11/2020 22:09

I like the sachets, the texture is smoother than normal rolled oats.

ArabellaScott · 27/11/2020 22:09

I have poured some oats to be companionable, and will now sit here in silence until moved to eat.

Quakers have upset me by getting rid of their coconut flavour sachets. I’ve bulk bought every box I can find and think I have about 4 months left.

After that I don’t know what to do, I don’t like the Moma coconut porridge.

Although I see quakers have got a new chocolate flavour.

If you soak rolled oats overnight they come out super creamy like the sachets. Cheaper and no sugar
DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/11/2020 22:12

I like the speed of the microwave oats.

JacobReesMogadishu · 27/11/2020 22:12

And I have bought some coconut flavour drops to see if adding that to plain porridge will recreate the coconut porridge.

VienneseWhirligig · 27/11/2020 22:13

Now I really fancy some porridge!

N0rthern · 27/11/2020 22:16

Tesco’s organic porridge oats are the best- chunky

GladAllOver · 27/11/2020 22:17

Quaker Oats come from the same factory as Scott's Oats. They are both owned by PepsiCo Inc.

I prefer Quaker as they are usually rolled smaller than Scott's and soften quicker when microwaved.

thenightsky · 27/11/2020 22:19

They are all the same in my experience. Two tablespoons of whatever brand/size in a glass bowl. Add milk to double the volume. Microwave for one min. Stir. Microwave another min. Stir. Add more milk if too thick and microwave again. Stir in syrup and eat.

BlueBrian · 27/11/2020 22:23

Just buy Aldi's cheapo ones, only 75p a kilo, soak them overnight and they're fine.

SlopesOff · 27/11/2020 22:24

I am clearly a heathen. I buy the cheapest oats in a big clear bag because I don't want to pay for a fancy box with a picture on it. My flapjacks vanish quickly so no-one is bothered about the name of the oats.

ArabellaScott · 27/11/2020 22:25

I think I prefer the Agnostic oats, but I'm not quite decided.

littleloopylou · 27/11/2020 22:26

This is important research, OP. Thank you for your service.

I am constantly disappointed with the quality of the oats in England.

EllaView · 27/11/2020 22:26

@ViciousJackdaw

YANBU. Quaker oats ARE deceptive. Last time I bought a box, I poured some out, only to find that they were Unitarian oats.
My favourite post of the day Grin
jessstan1 · 27/11/2020 22:28

If you are so into texture, don't buy them any more.

I love the sachets of quick cook oats and add fruit. Porridge doesn't generally have a lot of texture but it is very good for you.

My recipe is almost the same as yours. One cup of oats, two cups of milk in a bowl. Put it in the fridge overnight to soak. In the morning, three minutes in the microwave. Quick stir and enjoy.

No sugar but I have been known to give it a sprinkle of cinnamon.

wigglerose · 27/11/2020 22:35

No offense OP but you need a hobby. I know lockdown is driving us all demented but it's Friday night. Do a jigsaw or something! Wink

ChasingRainbows19 · 27/11/2020 22:36

I buy the big bag of oats in aldi ( green paper type bag I don’t even soak them ( might try). Still cook them with milk in the microwave for a couple of mins then add fruit.
The texture is different but I find them more filling than the sachet ones.

CactusKate · 27/11/2020 22:38

Morrisons Oats are the best I have tasted, also Morrisons Organic Oats.

I have them with banana, raisins, nutmeg, and blueberries most days.

CactusKate · 27/11/2020 22:39

Oh and I add syrup as well.

and strawberries

goingtotown · 27/11/2020 22:42

Scott’s Old Fashioned Porage Oats is thick milled oats. Much better than normal oats.

Redolent · 27/11/2020 22:42

This reminds me of my last workplace: at 9am sharp every day, the tiny communal kitchen would be taken over by a group of very loud, chattering women, each making Quaker instant porridge in the microwave...clutching bowls, sachets and an assortment of berries. Took about 20 minutes for them all to disperse. Cue everyone else grumbling about how they couldn’t get to the kettle.
