To be deceived by Quaker oats

I also assumed that the Quaker oat sachets were different to the box of ‘rolled oats’ (the former are branded as quick cook, maybe more finely processed). An investigation reveals that they’re virtually identical, and that the big box is actually a con. What I assumed it would be is the third variety of oats depicted in this picture (M&S wholegrain oats), which are so clearly superior in texture etc..

AIBU? I thought ‘wholegrain rolled oats’ were the good stuff but clearly I’m wrong.

@Clockstop

Flavahans is the only way to go for oats
This.
EssentialHummus · 28/11/2020 09:13

Thanks nanny.

Meraas · 28/11/2020 09:14

I don’t think I’ve paid full price for Quaker sachets in ages, there is always an offer. (20 sachets for £2!)

When we eventually finish the current stock will try steel cut oats.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/11/2020 09:14

@cbt944

Quick oats come with a bonus high percentage of insect parts per pack.
added protein!
cbt944 · 28/11/2020 09:28

And crunch! Mmm, wings...

They are £1.50 atm Thats 12 x 27g = 324g Mornflake do a 3kg for £3.60 The Quaker cost around £10 ish for the same amout of powdery stuff plus all that packaging. Total con

I do prefer Flahavans but thought I would give this a go as I soak overnight anyway.

SewingBeeAddict · 28/11/2020 09:39

I should add its just as convenient as I put in the fridge to soak, take out and ping in the microwave in the morning.

Meraas · 28/11/2020 09:40

Yes I do agree sachets aren’t as cost effective. Will definitely try steel cut oats —sans insects—

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/11/2020 09:54

@ArabellaScott

I have poured some oats to be companionable, and will now sit here in silence until moved to eat.

SewingBeeAddict · 28/11/2020 10:05

Do we need to discuss toppings?
Or would war break out?

I do bramley apples cooked in butter with cinnamon and then a dollop of 10% fat greek yoghurt.
Dont be on at me about the fat free shite stuff, its not happening.Grin

@JacobReesMogadishu have you tried adding desiccated coconut? I wonder if that would come up creamy when you cook it like the oats and make a nice coconut porridge?

BiBabbles · 28/11/2020 10:37

That sounds lovely SewingBeeAddict

I've been more in a savoury mood for breakfasts, so have been known to add salsa, other mixed veg, sometimes eggs which makes a mix of oatmeal and scrambled eggs

Oooh I love a savoury breakfast too. I dont have a very sweet tooth so thats why I moved away from the sachets, as well as the cost, they are often quite high in sugar. I like the creamy plainness of the oats contrasted with the sharpness of the apple. Not sure I fancy egg and oats though but eggs, avo, grainy toast -yum!

Or coconut cream?
Waitrose do it in little tins

Allthequalitystreet · 28/11/2020 11:06

The steel cut kind are very difficult to cook into a soft porridge eg suitable for a baby. I bought a box in m&s once by mistake, I was cooking them (in milk) for ages and just ended up with still hard lumps in vaguely thickened milk.

Allthequalitystreet · 28/11/2020 11:08

Never understood the point of the sachets tho, surely you can just buy a large box of ordinary porridge oats for a fraction of the price and scoop out the amount for a portion.... what's the point of the sachets?

Ease of use. Bung one in your work bag, ping and its done. Novelty-different flavours
myrtleberry · 28/11/2020 11:34

I buy Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Scottish Whole Rolled Oats. You can see the size of the oats through the clear packaging.

exLtEveDallas · 28/11/2020 11:47

I like the Momo Vegan Almond Butter oats with a banana mushed in. I buy the sachets just because I like the taste, plain oats are just too plain - DD stirs fruits into her porridge, but I’m not keen. We both make it with water, not milk. She does it on the hob, I soak for 5 mins in boiling water then 90 secs in the micro.

I’ve recently discovered porridge, banana and a teaspoon of peanut butter. It’s lovely

PerpetualStudent · 28/11/2020 11:50

Oooh, you sound like the people who might be impressed by the 12kg sack of mornflake jumbo oats I have bought to see us through winter. I love going to the understair cupboard store to refill my oat tub - makes me feel like a hardy farmer’s wife Grin

SlopesOff · 28/11/2020 12:14

Insects Sad.
Are they just little black bits? Do you see wings, legs, eyeballs looking back at you?

CoffeeandCroissant · 28/11/2020 12:14

If you are not in a hurry I highly recommend this method:

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/11/2020 12:18

Desiccated coconut is a good idea. I think the tins of creamed coconut would make it too expensive.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/11/2020 12:40

You can replicate the sachet experience at a fraction of the cost, at home at least, by using a small cup or other container (we have a shot glass that holds almost exactly the same amount of oats as comes in a sachet) to measure out one of quick cook oats and two of milk and microwave for two minutes.

Saves all that wasteful non recyclable packaging too as the sachets are that combination of plastic and paper that is not currently recyclable.
