Yanbu - they’re not too close

I hope all the people who are sniffy because of Ezra Pound are equally sniffy over Joseph (Stalin), Freddy (Kruger), Tom (Riddle), Ben (-ito Mussolini)...

No? Ok then 🤔

LadyFelsham · 28/11/2020 23:48

Ezra Pound wrote some beautiful haikus-truly beautiful and controlled use of language.

May I suggest you read 'Death of the Author' by Roland Barthes. It is a seminal work and it may help you to divide the work from the man.

As far as I know, Pound did not murder anyone or advocate murdering anyone. After all, if Corbyn was now found to be a literary genius, would we not read his work because of his dodgy connections?

If we found someone called Ezra who was a lovely guy, would that make the name ok? Or would we have to have a certain number of good guys called Ezra to outweigh Ezra Pound. How many Jeremys would outweigh Jeremy Corbyn?

I get no-one wants to call a child Adolf or Myra but we are in for a difficult time choosing names if every one can only have angels and fluffy unicorns associated with it: one bad connection and the name is right on that naughty step!

Ezra is a great name and Ella is fine with it.

I think they're nice names and go well together

theThreeofWeevils · 29/11/2020 00:41

Not keen on either name, but so what. However the matching initials thing is asking for administrative headaches. Ezra and Rachel has sounds that work well together.

Twofurrycatsagain · 29/11/2020 01:10

I have no objection to either name on it's own. But I would not have the same intial for siblings. One friend grew up in a house where everyone was J furry catsfriends. A great aunt named all 4 of her girls J Furry cats mother's cousins. They all felt their names were a bit impersonal somehow.

Ericaequites · 29/11/2020 03:30

Edwin and Ethel? Edith and Edward? Eleanor and Ezra? I knew twins named Cecilia Marie and Cecile Marie; that was a huge mistake. Both went by their conformation names as teens and adults.

yetanothernamitynamechange · 29/11/2020 06:11

I am not sure if it has already been said but having the exact same initials and last name (E. Eryouwhat), date of birth, and (growing up) home address could cause a lot of admin issues for them - banks/credit card companies assuming they are one person, medical records being confused. All of these aren't insurmountable problems but if I was you I would try to give them names with different first letters or at te least include a middle name for each which starts differently.

AlicebytheSea · 29/11/2020 09:05

Ezra is okay, but I'd not go for Ella. It just sounds like a boring nickname for a longer prettier name ( Isabella, Fionella etc)

DarkMintChocolate · 29/11/2020 11:48

ITA with pp. We have twins. It didn't even occur to us, but one of them has quite different first and middle names from me, but we have the same initials. Its confusing when letters arrive for "Ms X.Y....."

Give them names with different initials.

Porridgeoat · 29/11/2020 16:02

Ezra and nell

Eryouwhat · 29/11/2020 18:35

I actually agree with the majority, the alliteration is naff. Real shame as I love both names.

Nell is lovely and goes well with Ezra. I like that the girl's name doesn't finish in -a. Better than Isabella.

midnightstar66 · 30/11/2020 08:26

I love the suggestion of Ezra and Raphaella

WunWun · 30/11/2020 08:34

I know a now adult Ezra who has never been bullied in their life. What a weird thing to say!

Strangedayindeed · 30/11/2020 09:01

If you love both names, go for it! There is no need to listen to random strangers on the internet. If you and your partner like the names that’s all that matters.

littlebillie · 30/11/2020 09:04

Also when they get post they won't thank you, you are naming adults names for life

toconclude · 30/11/2020 09:27

@reefedsail

I don't think they are too close phonologically, but to my ear they are an anachronistic pair. Ezra is very 'now' whereas Ella is quite of the 90s (to me).

I would have said Ezra and Elodie were more of a set.

Elodie?!!!

Same. He's a strapping farmer's lad and it suits him well.

Says more about the person saying it than the parent or the Ezra I'd argue.
SomelikeitHoth · 30/11/2020 18:35

As a Star Wars fan I can confirm that Ezra is a fantastic name
