Ezra and Ella for twins?

Yabu - they’re too close

Yanbu - they’re not too close

I don't get why some twins parents have to alliterate names

It’s completely normal in many cultures. Even siblings names are chosen so they have the same initial or a similar sound, sort of a way of linking siblings to the family. I don’t see anything wrong with it. My friend’s 3 daughters are Mia, Maryam and Mina! Better than giving twins names that sound odd or clunky together?

CallmeAngelina · 28/11/2020 10:10

I can't see that it's necessary to sign-post a pair of twins, particularly identical ones.

RattleOfBars · 28/11/2020 10:15

A great many countries find it odd that in the West we don’t always choose siblings names so they ‘match’ either by initial or sound or similarity of letters. I think it’s to do with the Western concept of individualism, while many other cultures value family connections more eg linking siblings by name so they feel closer?

Maireas · 28/11/2020 10:33

Then again, as been said above, initial +surname +dob is an identifier. Lots of posters above clearly indicating why siblings, especially twins, with the same initial is problematic. As long as you realise that and are OK, go for it. Just remember, you don't have a baby, you don't have cute twins, you have a person/people. One day they will be adults.

takingtoolong · 28/11/2020 10:35

@viciousjackdaw, I thought Ezra Pound too. :'( Not a nice man.

Maireas · 28/11/2020 10:50

That was me. I wouldn't use the name Ezra because of Ezra Pound, but if the OP likes the name, it's her choice.

fastwigglylines · 28/11/2020 11:04
@ViciousJackdaw oh I very much doubt im ‘guaranteeing’ Ezra will be called any such thing to his name or behind his back as you put it....otherwise, the delightful people doing the name calling will have their work cut out for them, there have been literally thousands of Ezras since 2017 (just take a peep at baby name popularity lists of the last few years 😂) so with some many Ezras, that joke would wear pretty thin pretty fast. And be exhausting for them to continue with for so many I think....
I've known someone called Ezra for 30 years now, and never once thought "arse"!

What strange minds some people have!

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 28/11/2020 16:04

Ezra is lovely but there are so many little girls called Ella it's overused. Just another Ella.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 28/11/2020 16:07

My nephews called Ezra that's why I think its lovely 😂

Mishmased · 28/11/2020 17:54

@LoveMyKidsAndCats not that you're biased at all 🤣🤣

mrstnov13 · 28/11/2020 18:30

Ezra is lovely. Ella is pretty too, they just don't go together as a sibset.

Wheresmykimchi · 28/11/2020 18:43

@Buddytheelf85

Are you Jewish? If not, I personally think calling your child Ezra is cultural appropriation. (Yes, I know it’s biblical, and lots of commonly used traditional names like Joshua and Jacob have Jewish origins, but Ezra is very culturally Jewish.)

Also think it will date terribly (if you aren’t Jewish) because it’s very fashionable.

But it’s your baby and I am a random stranger on the internet.

Cultural appropriation. I've heard it all now.

Where do you think Matthew and Luke came from?

MythsandSparkles · 28/11/2020 18:44

Please don’t give them alliterative names.

It’s a pain in the arse for so many of the reasons PP have stated.

Post is an issue, phone calls are an issue, drs/opticians/dentists are an issue, credit can be an issue “oh we already have an account for ASmith at that address, are you sure you want to open another one” “we can just add another phone line to your mobile contract, no need for a separate contract”.

Twins have enough of an issue with being seen as individuals as it is - don’t give them alliterative names because you think it’s cute.

Wheresmykimchi · 28/11/2020 18:46

@fastwigglylines

Ezra and Mila Ezra and Tabitha Ezra and Nia Ezra and Cerys Ezra and Niamh
I love Mila
Wheresmykimchi · 28/11/2020 19:01

@LoveMyKidsAndCats

My nephews called Ezra that's why I think its lovely 😂
I also have a relative called Ezra.

You mean that's two that haven't been ridiculed their whole lives 🙄

JanetPudding · 28/11/2020 19:07

@flaviaritt

Might also point out that Ezra Miller started his career as quirky and cool and fluid. There are now rumours of all sorts. So before I called my child ‘Ezra’, I’d be asking myself how I’d have feel if, twenty odd years ago, I’d called my child ‘Spacey’.
This makes no sense - and yes I have an Ezra in the family - this is true of any name at all!
JanetPudding · 28/11/2020 19:07

@CovidClara

Poor Ezra

Are you a Mormon? Jewish? Evangelical Christian?
Slighty bonkers?

Yes actually we're Jewish. What do you want to suggest now?
Wheresmykimchi · 28/11/2020 20:23

@Maireas

Im sure people won't get them mixed up. Ridiculous comment.
Maireas · 28/11/2020 20:25

It's not ridiculous. It's my opinion. I don't like the name because of the association. Just like Winston and Boris have strong associations. It's you that's being ridiculous.

Mischance · 28/11/2020 20:32

They are lovely. They will not be joined at the hip for the rest of their lives and this X and Y thing will pass. If you like the names then stick with. They are individuals, not a matching pair to have names that go together.

TremoloGreen · 28/11/2020 20:44

Ezra was on my list if DD2 was a boy. I had no idea it was popular now... DH didn't want it because he said people who aren't Jewish will think its a girls' name. He's wrong though and its beautiful.

We are Jewish by the way, to the PP who thought that was somehow ridiculous Hmm

I don't think Ella goes though and I do think the two matchy names are a bit twee.

These were the girls names I had on the list at the same time
Abigail
Eliza or Elizabeth (might be too similar?)
Noa
Yael - DH also vetoed!
Lilah
Dalia
Ruth also goes well but we already have one in the family!

Tsubasa1 · 28/11/2020 20:50

I love the name Ella and I don't think it's so overused that it should put you off. It's less popular than say an Isla, Olivia, Ava or Amelia

Wheresmykimchi · 28/11/2020 21:36

@Maireas

It is ridiculous. If we didn't have names corrected to someone who has done bad things there'd be none left! Should we get rid of Kevin the Carrot because of Kevin Spacey? Or all Harvey's? Donalds?
Maireas · 28/11/2020 21:42

Dear lord. I'm not applying it to everyoneor all names. Personally, for me, I hear Ezra and think of an antisemitic fascist writer. Others may think of a lovely little boy or a dear friend. Fine. It's all personal and just an opinion. I'm not telling anyone not to name their child Ezra. Go for it.

I know you're not. My point is only that there are lots of names that sadly are shared with someone who was not a pleasant human being.
