To think that I can can’t be the only woman that has a huge stock of unused body moisturiser?

I get through face moisturiser in a flash, smelly bath shite gets used, even the dodgy shower gels get their turn but I seem to have a massive backlog of moisturiser ranging from Ballis and Harding up to Jo Malone and none of it gets used.

It's really dependent on the needs of your skin. When my nephew stays over we bathe all three kids every night, DNephew is Kenyan and is moisturised top to toe daily plus shea butter on his hair. DS2 gets moisturised every few days on the tops of his arms and his face as otherwise his cheeks get super dry with little bumps. DS1 would be a greaseball if we put any lotion on him anywhere, it just doesn't sink in so he never gets any lotion at all.

DH puts it on his face only when he can actually see flakes. I do my face, hands, feet, knees and elbows and only occasionally the rest of my body because it sinks in so slowly and stays sticky.

That's interesting!

I know quite a few people who are black who moisturise more - I'm not sure if they need it more - or just are used to doing this culturally, I had a male friend from Dominica who always used cocoa butter on his body - all over it.

My DM has rheumatoid arthritis and due to taking medication which thins her skin she moisturises all over every day with Aloe Vera Nivea.

@Dannydevitoiloveyourart

I’m sure this is the whitest thread in the history of mumsnet Grin.

I don’t know any black person who doesn’t use moisturiser every day and every time they get wet - and in winter only heavy moisturisers like cocoa butter and nivea extra dry will do.

But is this because black people's skin gets more dry (due to harsher sun from when they were from/lived in Africa/Caribbean etc?) than caucasian skin?

My white skin just doesn't seem to need extra moisturiser on the body - except in summer, when sunbathing but also generally in summer.

StrawberrySquash · 25/11/2020 12:34

I use it! I get scaly legs if I don't bother. I should bother more. I don't worry about it getting on clothes. A bit doesn't hurt and it'll sink in over time.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 25/11/2020 12:37

I used to but I've been deliberately using it all up this year. Although it has , is , taking forever because I go through periods of using it religiously and then a matching period of "can't be arsed " before bed.

It's just quite a lot of effort some days

speakout · 25/11/2020 12:43

I donate it too.
I don;t like smelly stuff, and prefer to buy my own body products, so I give it to charity shops, etc.
I know the local women's shelter at the Salvation army near me always take shower gel and other pampering products for residents to use.

Flibbertigibbet2211 · 25/11/2020 13:10

I can't bear body lotion or most body butters either, even though my skin is dry. I particularly can't bear the feel of anything oil-based on my hands while applying it to my body, and the thinner lotions take ages to sink in, delaying me when I'm in a rush after a shower. I wonder whether the key to this divide is really between people who bath/shower at night and see it as a relaxing activity, and those who do it as fast as possible in the morning before getting dressed, made up (for those of us who wear it) and out of the house? I also have an aversion to the rather sweet, sickly smell of Soap & Glory, cocoa-type products and the like.

I love shower gel and use every one I'm given, and I moisturise my face and my desperately dry hands (only one particular cream goes near making any difference, so it's hard to use up the body lotions this way either).

I am also have a little giggle at this thread tbh. I am white but live in Africa, and do use body lotion every day. It is most definitely a normal thing that every African person I know does religiously. Male and female. The range of body lotions and creams that we have available is more impressive that a frozen food aisle of a British supermarket Grin. Although Vaseline is probably always going to be a top seller. (also lets not forget about normal Vaseline, the jelly one, also a contender here) Not only is there 'lotion' as it is just generically called, but there is tissue oil which you add into lotion to make it even more impressive.

But I have to say that I am envious of black African people's skin. It is always so healthy looking, and so shiny. They just glow. All the time.

I add self tan into my 'lotion' just to try to be a smidgen more glowy.

LakieLady · 25/11/2020 13:12

My skin has always been on the dry side, but as soon as I hit 40, it went like sandpaper. Even with daily moisturising, my legs are still flakey and if I take off my jeans and leave them inside out, they look like they're coated in dandruff. They get sore and itchy, so do my elbows and forearms. I have an underactive thyroid, and I think this makes it worse.

So I moisturise, religiously. O'Keefe's skin repair lotion is bloody good, but I also find Superdrug's Vit E body cream remarkably good for the money. I tend to use O'Keefe's in the morning, after a shower, and the Vit E one before I go to bed. If I miss doing it one day, I really notice the difference.

The Soap & Glory body butter is good, too, which surprises me as I'm not usually a fan. Sadly, no-one has bought me any for years.

Mia1415 · 25/11/2020 13:15

YANBU I never use it. I've loads of the stuff

isthismylifenow · 25/11/2020 13:21

Nivea brought out that in shower creme a few years ago, which to me was just a diluted down Nivea cream that you put on at the end of the shower and then rinsed off. I think its been discontinued now, there were a fair few complaints of people slipping in the shower.

It cost about 3 times the price for a tiny bottle compared to a huge bottle of normal Nivea which I think was the same thing.

GuyFawkesDay · 25/11/2020 13:24

I use the loccitane almond shower oil. Add k cloth and no need to moisturise a fair bit of the time. See also Lush butterball, though watch getting out the bath as the shea butter is slidy

Aldi own spray moisturiser smells like timotei used to. Lush. Green can one.

Kamma89 · 25/11/2020 13:39

This thread has shocked me! I moisturise sometimes twice a day. Can't not moisturise after a bath or shower. I suspect this may be race related. I don't know a single BAME person, man or woman who doesn't moisturise. I picked up the habit from grandmother & mother & have to say, their skin is in fantastic condition for their age. Hope the same for me!

Patentrain · 25/11/2020 13:44

I have more than I use but i do like, I find perfumes to be too strong but body lotion gives a more subtle scent.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/11/2020 13:48

I’ll have anyone’s spare body lotion! If I don’t slather it on arms and legs after a shower I start to look like a prehistoric scaly lizard.
Must be nice not to need it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/11/2020 13:49

@Othering I use it instead of shower gel? Shower gel dries my skin out terribly anyway.

Roussette · 25/11/2020 14:09

LakieLady that VitE Superdrug one... is that the one in a big tub? If so, totally agree.
It is such good value, I like the smell, it is thick and creamy and sometimes there's an offer of buy one, get one half price. If I have no expensive stuff on the go, I always have that as my go-to moisturiser

sqirrelfriends · 25/11/2020 16:03

Can I have them please? I resemble a lizard if I forget to moisturise.

sqirrelfriends · 25/11/2020 16:05

Sorry@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER I didn't read the thread before postingBlush

QueenOfPain · 25/11/2020 16:07

I’ve had slightly more success using the Boots Sanctuary ones that you can slather on when you’re still wet and about to step out of the shower, and they do work as well!

fussychica · 25/11/2020 16:10

Send it to me, I love a decent body lotion and body butter but I'm no spring chicken and anything that stops my skin from getting like leather is very welcome.

Oldraver · 25/11/2020 17:14

My Mum used to buy me loads though I have eczema and can't use it

coldspaghettio · 25/11/2020 20:12
