To think that I can can’t be the only woman that has a huge stock of unused body moisturiser?

I get through face moisturiser in a flash, smelly bath shite gets used, even the dodgy shower gels get their turn but I seem to have a massive backlog of moisturiser ranging from Ballis and Harding up to Jo Malone and none of it gets used.

Never moisturise my body (unless sunburnt) and rarely my face. I don't tend to get dry skin though.

coldspaghettio · 25/11/2020 01:22

My hands are always drier than a lizard. They are cracked and sore.

I go through loads of hand cream. Makes no difference long term. Moisturise and then ten minutes later have to wash my hands because of baby's nappy etc.

Any ideas for this issue, recommendations of hand cream? I've been using L'occitane and Aesop but neither have helped. Also tried Aveeno.

I have ONE Clarins one that I like, I buy it for myself. It’s the only one that I’ve consistently liked and used. It’s in a pump-type bottle and I often slather a bit on my arms and legs and chest when sitting on the loo before bed. As well as after showering obvs Smile
Other brands/gifts go to the teen or the charity shop

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/11/2020 01:58

I prefer oil to body lotion - some skin oils, palmers is good, will often just use olive oil - but yes, large stash of unused moisturiser/lotion.

Mrstwiddle · 25/11/2020 02:03

I can’t believe so many people don’t use body lotion regularly! I always put it on after a shower, it doesn’t take long, and it makes skin feel and smell nice, am so surprised to find this isn’t the norm really.

Livedandlearned · 25/11/2020 02:14

I can't imagine anything worse. It doesn't sink into my skin very well at all so I'd have a layer under my clothes.

My skin is very soft and I only get dry skin on my hands in the winter.

I always smell nice, clean and fresh my dh says.

Buggritbuggrit · 25/11/2020 02:29

This is fascinating! I’m Black, so have moisturised, head to toe, every single day of my life. (To the poster who asked, yes, men do it, too). I would be an ashy mess if I didn’t.

Body lotion/cream is as essential to me as shower gel and I use them at about the same rate.

SantaSpreadsCovid · 25/11/2020 02:37

If you don’t feel you have the time before putting clothes on then the body shop body yoghurts are nice because they sink into damp skin really quickly. You do have to get past the name “body yoghurt” though.

Just want to second this.

I've never used body lotion, last years New Years resolution was to use up some of the shit I'd been given as freebies for other purchase or as part of gift sets for perfumes I've bought on offer for myself etc. I hate feeling greasy and I ended up giving most away but fell in love with The Body Shop Body Yoghurt. I don't like mlms though so I don't buy from the huns doing body shop at home, last time I made that mistake a few years ago for something else they hassled and hassled to recruit me. I order direct from the body shop website, price is usually cheaper and delivery much much quicker.

BusterGonad · 25/11/2020 02:54

I use body lotion every time I bathe or shower, at the moment I have Vaseline aloe vera one but its not a, favorite. I actually prefer ones that work rather than smell amazing, if that makes sense. So I'd rather use a nivea body lotion than a posh perfumed one. I moisture my face twice a day and like to use jabd cream too. I'm quite dry skinned. I also love a bath oil. I've used body moisturizer since I can remember. I started with baby lotion as a face cleanser and a body cream.

GurpsAgain · 25/11/2020 03:12

You are not the only person, yet alone woman. 😂

I have a fair amount and tbh I think it's because I'm too lazy to apply it after every shower, especially when getting ready for work. I only really get dry skin on my face.

TheRealHousewife · 25/11/2020 03:31

@SionnachRua I'm the opposite, I hate scented bath stuff and takes me longer to get through facial moisturizer than it does the body stuff. I love body moisturiser, it always gets used right after a shower (Aveeno after shower mist is fab). I go through rakes of the stuff.

Aveno Mist is lethal ... no matter how careful I am it goes everywhere and makes the floor slippy (tried in the shower as well as on a towel). It’s a no from me.

Graciebobcat · 25/11/2020 03:46

No I don't. I use body moisturiser once or twice a week and don't have a "huge stock" of unused anything cluttering up the house. Toiletries I don't like bought for me by someone else go to the charity shop. Any I do like get used up one by one before I buy myself any more.

Spaghettibetty345 · 25/11/2020 04:02

@coldspaghettio
Loccitane do an intense version of their hand cream. Might be worth a try. You could also buy raw Shea butter to put on your hand

I don’t use body lotion but I am starting to! I have quite blotchy skin to trying to improve that. I like using nice ones and not cheap gift set ones. They feel more luxurious and make you want to actually use them. I know you can get ones that sink it really well quickly such as body yoghurts which I haven’t tried yet. All of those saying you don’t have time should try these.

LittleEsme · 25/11/2020 06:29

I have too much.

It's the 'gift set' phenomenon - sold in lovely looking, easy to wrap packages.

I'd much rather 'not' receive a gift set - just the tub of lotion that I asked for! Hate all that packaging, the plastic innards, the uselessly small candles etc.

DappledThings · 25/11/2020 06:49

Sure you can let it soak in but a light moisturiser can do that under clothes
But don't your clothes stick to.your skin if you try to put them on while your skin is all greasy and wet? I don't get it.

Lanaa · 25/11/2020 06:50

I must go through a tub a week. I love a good body cream and put it on twice a day after I shower. It really does keep your skin soft. My partner never uses it and his skin is ok. Maybe your skin "learns" to need it. My mother made us lotion up since I was small and it's a habit I've continued.

The lotions and butters that come in sets are generally crap. Bayliss and Harding used to be sold in Poundland. They've had some kind of magical PR turnaround but imho it's still cheap shite. You need to shop around to find a brand that works for you.

Malin52 · 25/11/2020 07:01

I had loads. Gifts mainly. Occasionally a thing from a set. Lots of tiny bottles taken from hotel rooms!

I started using huge amounts everyday just to get through the backlog. We then moved so far away that we never get gifts anymore! I am now down to one last bottle of it and I am delighted that I decluttered!

My approach was:

Use it daily all over your body. Loads of it. It sinks in pretty quickly and you'll smell nice. If you don't like the feeling use it in the shower as a sink conditioner. Honestly sounds weird but it works. Slather on wet skin, leave for a few seconds and rinse off. You get through loads this way and skin feels lovely and soft.

Prioritise your stash:

  • chuck anything that smells weird or is past it's use by date. Don't feel guilty just chuck it. It's harbouring bacteria.
  • prioritise anything opened but smells fine. Use methodically and bask in the joy of an empty pot!
  • next use up your unopened bits. Again one by one. If you have loads regift or give away

Make it clear no one can purchase you body lotion ever.

Now you can Revel in your no body lotion life

Malin52 · 25/11/2020 07:02

Not a sink conditioner! Skin conditioner!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/11/2020 07:13

@Othering you just use it in the cloth in the shower instead of shower gel. I just do it as the last thing before I get out, it so simple. The cloths are like a mitten, they are a bit coarse at first but go gently and they soften up with use. Cheap moisturiser is perfect.

To be honest I rarely use moisturiser on dry skin, I hate the greasy cold feeling, but this way you end up really smooth and lovely.

They do face ones too but I've never used them although I do use a Muslin cloth and a dot of face cream, again wet the cloth and gently exfoliate the face with the cloth (a bit like the hot cloth cleansing kits you can get)

BarbaraofSeville · 25/11/2020 07:20

I've never used it and have never seen the need to use it. My skin is fine.

The only time I rub cream into my skin is sunscreen on holiday because I have to do that or else I will burn and every time I think about what a total pain in the arse it is, and wonder about the people who think that it is a 'relaxing treat self care activity' to do.

If I ever get body lotion as a gift, it is usually in the charity shop before New Year.

Othering · 25/11/2020 07:21

Do you mean shower using shower gel as normal and then put body lotion on the cloth, apply it all over and rinse it off or leave it on? Or don't use shower gel at all but use lotion instead? I'm still unsure!!!

Malin52 · 25/11/2020 07:25

@Othering I shower as normal using shower gel/soap and rinse off. Take a big handful of body lotion and slather over wet skin. Leave for a few seconds and rinse off.

Other good use is as shaving cream in the shower.

FreshfieldsGal · 25/11/2020 07:30

I always use body cream. My gp told me ages ago that if you have dry skin like me to avoid lotions - they are water based so when they dry they take moisture from your skin.
Atm I use Neals Yard rose body cream, its gorgeous. Highly recommended!

MrsGrindah · 25/11/2020 07:33

It’s not that it’s onerous , for me it’s just unnecessary. I don’t have particularly dry skin ) although it is itchy but that’s because it’s sensitive. I like the clean , just out of bath or shower feeling . But it’s a lazy gift which is why people are always bestowing it on others. Like socks for men.

fastwigglylines · 25/11/2020 07:36

I was secretly disappointed with how little they must know me when both my mother and sister gave me expensive body lotion for Christmas the other year. I don't wear make up, don't have any interest in "beauty regimes" and have never used the stuff. I'm not even keen on squeezy soap shower gel, I prefer quality bar soap made with natural ingredients.

It seems like a generic woman present, something we're supposed to like because the beauty industry tells us so. How many men worry about the softness of their skin?
