I can't stop myself - I don't even watch rugby as a rule! I've just seen Johnny Wilkinsons waxwork being lifted onto the spare plinth in Trafalgar Square and blokes singing 'Swing Low' at Waterloo and I'm a wreck!

The whole hype is gonna kill me by tomorrow night!

COME ON ENGLAND

no no, really desi, i'm not being sarcastic, that was heart-felt, thank god england lost. it's unbearable when they are winning, the tv lot have been going wild for the last week or so anyway, if England had won it would have been insufferable. so i wasn't trying to offend, that is genuinely my reaction.

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 22/10/2007 00:03

Dick Best actually said that getting to the final was dreadful for England rugby, because we haven't been great in the past year or so, let's be honest, and if we'd have crashed out early, it would have meant things would have HAD to change... but getting through to the final just papered over the cracks, as it were.

I think it was a real achievement, and the boys should be rightly proud, but we DO need to work on our back play, we scored hardly any tries and we rely too heavily on Jonny and the power of our pack...

TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 00:16

Well, Aitch. The way I see it is this.

You've got your own parliament. You get more money per head than we do. Westminster is over-subscribed with Scottish MPs who can vote on our affairs, despite the fact that we can't vote on yours.

Our Prime Minster is Scottish, as is our Chancellor. We can't vote in their constituencies, yet they can both cast a vote in ours.

If you want to talk about inequity, I'll sit here all bloody night.

And if the Scottish have got a problem with the way that English sport is broadcast, then deal with it. Talk to your media, tell them that it pisses you off.

It's not in our hands. We don't control it. I'm sorry that it pisses you off, but stop whingeing to us about it and DO SOMETHING!!

AitchTwoOh · 22/10/2007 00:22

er, no. i don't want to. i just want to thank god that you didn't win, okay?

Any how, your boiling mass of Celtic resentment, you have more chance of getting into Euro 2008 than we do.

In order for England to qualify, we have to ..

  1. Beat Croatia
  2. Rely on Israel beating Russia.

Unlikely, on both counts. And I believe that Scotland only has to meet one criteria to get through.

Then you can gloat as much as you like!! And because we're English, we'll allow it.

AitchTwoOh · 22/10/2007 00:47

no, you're missing the point. i don't care about sport, other than to actively dislike it cluttering up my tv screen. add to that the dreadful jingoistic cheerleading, be it tartan or otherwise, and i'm rolling my eyes.

TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 01:06

Well, you're missing the point. I do love sport. It' a matter of life and death to me.

If you take the piss out of my team, you might as well take the piss out of my child.

And if you don't like sport, why do you feel the need to post on this thread?

Anti-English sentiment, perhaps?

AitchTwoOh · 22/10/2007 01:13

no, you dope, i came onto this thread to find out if england won or not. and when i found out they didn't i thanked god as it would mean i wouldn't have to hear about it for the next few weeks. that is all. nothing to see, move along.

TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 01:23

But the Scottish complaint is that it's plastered across their media, against their wishes!!

Now I am led to believe that you missed it, somehow. So, obviously, it wasn't reported.

Well, for those of you in Scotland who didn't get the news (because you're an autonomous nation .... apparently), we lost.

And like I said ... in the future, when Scotland does better than us in any particular endeavour, I will have the good grace to say nothing at all, or say something nice.

When Scotland reaches the same state of grace, I might even privately think it.

But until then .....

AitchTwoOh · 22/10/2007 01:33

oh for goodness sake, desi, i've been working and then i was out with dd all day, i haven't seen a newspaper or tv. i can't really be bothered reading the rest of your post, tbh, as you seem to be ignoring my earlier point that i don't like the jingoistic crap from any source, and i don't like sport. i am DELIGHTED that your team lost, absolutely delighted, because it means i'll hear less about it.

boolepew · 22/10/2007 12:46

Erm... I started the comment on the way the media reports England's sporting 'achievements', I live in N.Ireland, not Scotland.

saltire · 22/10/2007 16:15

now you know how we Scots feel when we lose!

prettybird · 22/10/2007 16:45

TheEvilDediderata - we do talk to "our" media, frequently - and complain, frequently.

However, in case you hadn't noticed, we pay a compulsory licence fee for the British Broadcasting Corporation and not the English Broadcasting Corporation.

And by the way, I'd love for us to have our independence, especially as you consider that we are such a drain. Can we also have our oil money back as well?

saltire · 22/10/2007 16:53

PB -We'd be saddled with Alex Salmond then, that's not a good thing surely?

prettybird · 22/10/2007 17:00

I have to say that ym dad - a life long Labour supporter (a typical trendy liberal) - has been really impressed with Salmond and the way he has handled the minority government.

Don't think he will be voting Labour again - even if he may not be able to bring himself to vote SNP.

Even Jenny Hjul in the Sunday Times - and arch conservative - has written some grudging admiration.

boolepew · 22/10/2007 19:34

Saltire, I see your Salmond and raise you a Paisley and an Adams!

stleger · 22/10/2007 19:44

Yeah but you had Adrian Logan's rugby special!

boolepew · 22/10/2007 19:47

Whoop de doop.

TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 22:57

You're welcome to it, Prettybird.

A little late in the day for oil, but you're welcome.
