Aaagr.

It started with buffalo cauliflower wings😔
There are no wings on cauli! It doesn't remotely taste like wings either! It's BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER BITES. (Which are really nice btw)

Then the Jackfruit Pulled Pork.
No. There is NO pork.
It's "pulled jackfruit" if anything. Liers.

And to top it off... Chickpe tuna. The hell, people😔 The hell... It hasn't even passed tuna anywhere in its existence.
It's CHICKPEA spread or something. No tuna. Bad people.

Liessssss. Why can't food be just called what it is🤦 There is just no need for all them liessssssssss.

@Janaih

I saw cauliflower steaks on a menu once! Shock
And what is wrong with that ?
CorianderLord · 23/11/2020 00:14

Why does it bother you so much? It's to indicate to people what meat dish the product is imitating.

There are far better things to be annoyed about than marketers using words to get a point across.
@CodenameVillanelle

It doesn't make sense. You can't think "yummy" and "abhorrent" about the same thing surely?
Sure I can. Meat tastes delicious but the logical knowledge of what it is and its journey to the plate disgusts me.

Sensory response versus logic response.

True. It’s not peanut butter it’s peanut puree. It’s not curry it’s sabzi and ‘curry powder’ doesn’t mean anything as there are 1000s of sabzis with really different flavour profiles.

Pieces of cauliflower are not imitation anything meat related though. It's pieces of cauli with sauce on it. Like this I could put bbq sauce on sticks of celery and call it bbq ribs then. Or put salt on blueberry and call it salted nut.

Agree on peanut thing!
Interesting about the curry!

A steak is a cut of meat or fish. Not cauliflower.

Maireas · 23/11/2020 08:51

"Buffalo" wings originated in Buffalo, New York. Nothing to do with the animal.

RaspberryCoulis · 23/11/2020 08:55

Not just food. I was looking for a new case for my phone recently and wanted a proper leather one.

Discovered that it's perfectly legal to describe plastic as PU leather or vegan leather.

It's not fecking leather. It's polyurethane PLASTIC.

Maireas · 23/11/2020 08:58

"vegan leather". Ridiculous.
I saw some clothes labelled as "vegan" recently - I suppose it sounds better than "polyester".

SoupDragon · 23/11/2020 09:06

PU leather

That pisses me off so much! It's not sodding leather!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/11/2020 09:14

My mum was moaning about the leather thing too last year. I told her that it looks like she might have to hunt something herself and have it made into a bag. 😂
If it's small animal she actually could tho. She used to gut and skin rabbits.

CodenameVillanelle · 23/11/2020 09:21

Why do you people care? Surely you grasp that 'vegan leather' (for eg) is shorthand for 'vegan alternative to leather'?
Really, get a life!

Maireas · 23/11/2020 09:24

@SoupDragon - I love the fact that it's genuine PU Leather, as opposed to.... 😱

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/11/2020 09:27

We wouldn't tolerate genuine PY cotton (polyester) though, would we🤷🏻 It's interesting to see what is ok and what isn't. I do wonder about the why behind it

OP posts:
RaspberryCoulis · 23/11/2020 09:27

Of course we can grasp it.

But it's still a barefaced lie. It's not "vegan leather". It's plastic. That's a shorter term. The only reason that it's called "vegan leather" is so that it comes up on search results for people who search for leather as a cheaper result - it's intended to deceive.

I don't like the term "pleather" but at least that's not intended to deceive in the same way.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/11/2020 09:54

Yes. Pleather is much better. I imagine not everyone is immediately aware what the PU as in example above stands for. I wasn't not so long ago.

Perhaps you need to calm down a bit yourself...?
CounsellorTroi · 23/11/2020 10:09

Perhaps the cosmetic industry should not call things milk, butter, cream etc in case someone tries to cook with them.

jay55 · 23/11/2020 10:19

I wish products would say nut sauce/topping rather than any reference to cheese.

donquixotedelamancha · 23/11/2020 10:22

I love the fact that it's genuine PU Leather, as opposed to....

Presumably it came from the hide of a polyurethane cow?

I do so hate when people try to pass off bovine skin as if it's luxury polyurethane.

donquixotedelamancha · 23/11/2020 10:24

Surely you grasp that 'vegan leather' (for eg) is shorthand for 'vegan alternative to leather'?

If one were being strictly literal vegan leather means something quite different.

unmarkedbythat · 23/11/2020 10:25

I love meat eaters getting pissy about the names of vegetarian and vegan food. It just sounds like "waaaaaaaah they're taking my words" and I enjoy it immensely.

For my tea I am going to have vegetarian SAUSAGE rolls and tomorrow I might make some halloumi BURGERS and as I eat them I will imagine all your cross little faces :)

donquixotedelamancha · 23/11/2020 10:28

I saw some clothes labelled as "vegan" recently - I suppose it sounds better than "polyester".

Since polyester is generally made from little fishies I would think cheap plastic clothes are much less vegan than cotton, linen etc.
