People browsing clothes at M&S

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

No. But l've not been out in this lockdown so that probably explains why.

Sorry, not very helpful really!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 20/11/2020 18:24

I am beginning to wonder if people have got the message that we are in a proper lockdown. Today I picked up presents from Argos, and more than one person went to walk in and were surprised o hear it's clock and collect only. But not as bizarre as the man who tried to move the barriers at Smyths to go shopping Confused and then had a huge tantrum when the poor shop assistant broke the news that toy shops weren't essential and the reason that there were barriers and just a table at the entrance was because it's click and collect only.

burritofan · 20/11/2020 18:24

They are allowed to buy those items.

Audreyseyebrows · 20/11/2020 18:25

Not been in a shop but can they not buy them?
I assumed places that sold food and other things (m and s, b and m etc) were open as usual selling everything?

vanillandhoney · 20/11/2020 18:25

But they are allowed to buy them.

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/11/2020 18:25

I saw this the other week. A friend said they’ll happily sell you any clothes you pick up. Guess Tesco, etc all sell clothes and are still open.

Lotsachocolateplease · 20/11/2020 18:26

At my local m&s the set up is the same where you have to walk through the clothes to get to the food. The person greeting is at the door explained that the whole of the first floor was open. They have moved children’s clothes and Some menswear to the ground floor too. If the big supermarkets can do it......

MrsTWH · 20/11/2020 18:27

Clothes are essential items, I don’t see the problem here.

PodgeBod · 20/11/2020 18:27

I've bought clothes at Tesco and Asda so I presume you can buy them in M&S as well

Hahaha88 · 20/11/2020 18:28

Why shouldn't you buy clothes from m n s if you can when in tesco asda or sainsburys? Hmm

PinkiOcelot · 20/11/2020 18:28

This doesn’t feel like a lockdown. Nothing like the first. There’s so many places open. The first lockdown the roads were empty on my way to work, now I get stuck in traffic.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/11/2020 18:28

I thought you could buy clothes in M&S. I understood that if a shop is open you can whatever they sell. I bought a completely non essential gift voucher and Percy Pig Christmas tree this week

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/11/2020 18:28

Oddly the upstairs is closed which is where the knickers and bras and kids clothes are....all of which I would argue are more essential than adult clothes?

megletthesecond · 20/11/2020 18:28

I've had to buy clothes from m&s for an non uniform day. Thanks school.

LemonsYellow · 20/11/2020 18:28

They can buy those items. What makes you think they can’t? Shops that are open can sell everything in them.

Westfacing · 20/11/2020 18:28

Yes you an buy the clothes at M&S, which is unfair on the small independent shops which have been forced to close

sunshinehappy20 · 20/11/2020 18:29

@JacobReesMogadishu

I saw this the other week. A friend said they’ll happily sell you any clothes you pick up. Guess Tesco, etc all sell clothes and are still open.
But I presume you can't go to the food court tills to pay, which would mean the 'shop' till needs to be open?

It's crazy that people are so determined to go into physical shops when you can buy anything online

Pipandmum · 20/11/2020 18:29

As with any supermarket that sells non food items places like M&S are allowed to as well. Tough on non food retailers but there are times you need certain items. The rules do seem a bit random - I'm sure many people going to garden centres are buying non essentials too.

PuppyMonkey · 20/11/2020 18:29

Socks are pretty essential items where I live, are you in Barbados OP? Grin

Hayeahnobut · 20/11/2020 18:30

The official government guidelines state that if different areas in a shop are distinctly separate, the non essential ones should be closed. That includes clothing. However I don't know of any stores that are following this, or that any enforcement is taking place. The sad thing is, small independent clothes shops are not allowed to open.

JuneFromBethesda · 20/11/2020 18:32

I was at M&S yesterday to collect an order and bought a pair of boots while I was there. 30% off too - very happy 🙂

Goldensnitchy · 20/11/2020 18:32

You can still buy clothes etc if the shop is open. It’s not the same as the Wales rules

nevernotstruggling · 20/11/2020 18:32

M and s hasn't been closed at any point during lockdown here

JuneFromBethesda · 20/11/2020 18:32

And yes, the non-food tills were open.
