People browsing clothes at M&S

sunshinehappy20 · 20/11/2020 18:21

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

We’re close to two big Tesco’s. One’s all on one floor and you can buy clothes there. The other has clothes upstairs, which is closed so you can’t buy them 🤷‍♀️. The whole thing’s completely bonkers.

Vintagevixen · 20/11/2020 18:55

I have bought several clothing items from M&S in the last few weeks, I don't see any problem in it.

DappledThings · 20/11/2020 18:55

@PicsInRed

What if they were hair shirts, OP? Could they buy them then? For all that essential self-flaggelating?
Brilliant!
GolfMad54 · 20/11/2020 18:56

Too right, lockdowns are stupid anyway.

tulippa · 20/11/2020 18:58

I bought pyjamas, wrapping paper and party poppers in the shape of Brussels sprouts in Tesco today. Sorry OP. Confused

YoniAndGuy · 20/11/2020 18:58

There's no real lockdown.

There's no real government.

dottiedodah · 20/11/2020 19:02

Went to M and S who helpfully informed me that yes they were open, but only for knitwear(not cashmere as luxury item apparently)! The whole of the Childrens Section was open as well .About half the ground floor/Gifts /Socks and so on, If food is sold in the store ,allowed to open simple as that!

BecomeStronger · 20/11/2020 19:02

If a shop sell essentials it can also continue to sell the rest of it's stock. It's bonkers and really unfair to the other traders. Supermarkets can still sell greetings cards and books but card and book shops must close. I've seen something today that a local gift shop has started selling veg boxes and can now trade as usual.

sandragreen · 20/11/2020 19:02

My M&S is still selling clothes etc - why did you think they couldn't?

And for at least the past fifteen years I have paid for clothing at the food till if doing both. It's never been an issue.

OffredOfjune · 20/11/2020 19:04

I bought a lovely top for Christmas for my DM in Tesco whilst doing my food shop the other day. Why? Because we're allowed to.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 20/11/2020 19:04

Why start a thread with your made up rules OP

RaspberryCoulis · 20/11/2020 19:04

Who really gives a shit about this? People buying clothes in M&S is not spreading Covid.

People going into each other's houses is spreading Covid. As is care homes.

Didn;t take us long to go back to the "stay the fuck at home" and blatantly flouting by buying non-essentials, did it? Hmm

Vintagevixen · 20/11/2020 19:04

This is like the bonkers thread with the OP being outraged the Range was open we had last week, worlds gone mad.....

In my opinion all shops should be open.

RaspberryCoulis · 20/11/2020 19:06

@PinkiOcelot

This doesn’t feel like a lockdown. Nothing like the first. There’s so many places open. The first lockdown the roads were empty on my way to work, now I get stuck in traffic.
Why are people getting themselves into a frenzy about a PROPER lockdown, one where you STAY THE FUCK IN THE HOUSE and don't leave, ever, for anything. Especially not for M&S. So selfish, blatantly flouting and killing grannies. Hmm

If there's one thing that 2020 has taught us, it's that a lot of people are just stupid and short-sighted, and can't see beyond their own noses.

LolaSmiles · 20/11/2020 19:08

I think the regulations are that supermarkets M&S etc can keep non-food areas open when they're on the same floor, but have to close off departments that are on a different floor
That makes sense and explains why my local M&S has a limited selection of baby clothes, children's clothes, men's and women's basics on the ground floor on the way to the food hall. I was grateful of being able to pick up some vests for DC after another company messed up our online order.

Fluffybutter · 20/11/2020 19:10
@Fluffybutter I remember someone in the first lockdown saying to me, literally all in the same sentence, "I can't believe all these people ordering non essential toys and rubbish online, oh by the way just to let you know I just ordered nephew a water mat for his birthday next week so you'll need to get something different"
It’s mind blowing!

HitchikersGuide · 20/11/2020 19:10

As it's legal, there is no issue, and in any event, if people stopped taking such an obsessive interest in others' behaviour, we would have more chance of coming out of this with some small measure of social cohesion intact.

VivaMiltonKeynes · 20/11/2020 19:10

@Westfacing

Yes you an buy the clothes at M&S, which is unfair on the small independent shops which have been forced to close
It's like Boots being open and allowed to sell all their Christmas stuff while eg Body Shop next door isn't.
WhentheDealGoesDown · 20/11/2020 19:10

Yes upstairs is closed off in our M&S and downstairs is open as the law permits.

upsidedownwavylegs · 20/11/2020 19:12

@GlummyMcGlummerson

I am beginning to wonder if people have got the message that we are in a proper lockdown. Today I picked up presents from Argos, and more than one person went to walk in and were surprised o hear it's clock and collect only. But not as bizarre as the man who tried to move the barriers at Smyths to go shopping Confused and then had a huge tantrum when the poor shop assistant broke the news that toy shops weren't essential and the reason that there were barriers and just a table at the entrance was because it's click and collect only.
Well clearly you haven’t got the message since you were out doing non-essential things Hmm
HaggieMaggie · 20/11/2020 19:12

M&S clothing was available in the last lockdown too. Our huge out 9f town one you could buy what you walked through but in our smaller local one you pretty much walk through it all so you could buy what you wanted. I went in the local one last Saturday and bought socks, underwear, some boots and Christmas decorations all before I got to the food hall. Everything went through the food hall till with my breaded chicken and chocolate eclairs.

LilyWater · 20/11/2020 19:12

Supermarkets which already sell clothing stock are allowed to continue to sell clothes because they predominantly sell essential items alongside i.e. food.

Shops selling predominantly non-essential items are closed - New Look, Primark etc.

bigchris · 20/11/2020 19:13

Well I'm glad, I work in a click and collect place & I'm glad to be able to browse m&s and Boots, Superdrug, wh Smith, pound land etc in my lunch break

VinylDetective · 20/11/2020 19:13

Not if they’re on different floors.
