People browsing clothes at M&S

sunshinehappy20 · 20/11/2020 18:21

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

Good!!! - plenty of other high street store have closed down/gone in to administration, so if folk can be in the store anyway (buying food) then I don’t see the point in stopping them picking up some socks/jumper.

Unless people don’t want to have any shops at all left in the high street then probably best to stop moaning.

Feministicon · 20/11/2020 19:16

What a pointless load of poop

Janaih · 20/11/2020 19:19

I think there are far greater crimes than buying a scarf from M and S.

If it's a present for an elderly relative then you're in trouble!

MouseholeCat · 20/11/2020 19:20

I don't think people shopping for clothes in M&S are doing the wrong thing though if the clothes are out for sale.

Admittedly I'm in the US where our only local restriction is a city-wide mask mandate and much more needs doing, but I'm so perplexed by some of the UK lockdown rules. It seems so strange that the supermarkets can sell this stuff, while indie stores have to shut. Restricting mixing is really important, but this just feels like it lacks equity.

Livelovebehappy · 20/11/2020 19:20

Of course you can buy clothes in places which sell both clothes and food. I’ve done it in Sainsbury’s during lockdown.

ihatesandpits · 20/11/2020 19:21

I had to buy a new filter for our fish tank today. I knew the aquatic place was open and thought I could buy anything pond/tank related but. It the actual fish.
I found out you could buy fish as they were open, ( it really an essential item, but as I was their I let my toddler pick two new fish)
First time I've been out this lockdown

I bought mine to hang tiny puppies

Why would you have an issue with it? Buying clothes will assist the economy..which in turn pays for the NHS. I see no problem at all.

dogsdinnerlady · 20/11/2020 19:25

Hancock or whoever said at the beginning of this lockup that you can buy anything that's on sale in any shop that's open. Don't see the problem personally.

sophandbridge · 20/11/2020 19:26

You were in their shopping too OP, the M&S food hall isn't essential to go to when you can shop in a supermarket or get your food delivered.

Come on @loulouljh, keep up. You know the score by now. Unless you are sealed in your house, preferably cold, hungry and miserable, you are not doing lockdown properly and will murder grannies.

The more miserable and limited your life, the more virtuous and amazing you are.

grenadines · 20/11/2020 19:27

@DontTouchTheMoustache

It's crazy that people are so determined to go into physical shops when you can buy anything online
Some of us avoid buying online as we want to support our local high street shops.
Frazzled2207 · 20/11/2020 19:27

I was in M&S today. It’s all open. You pay for clothes in the clothes department. I am led to believe they have closed floors where there is no food- but this one is a huge one all on one floor so everything is open except for the cafe.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/11/2020 19:30

If a shop is open you can buy whats in it.

The essential item police can piss off

PolarBearStrength · 20/11/2020 19:31

I went to the garden centre today as we needed dog food. Had a good browse of plants, gifts, clothes etc too. Nice to get out for a bit tbh.

SummerHouse · 20/11/2020 19:32

Literally snorted at this. Then had to tell insistent child what I was laughing at. I told him he wouldn't get it but he is adamant that he does.

TheDowagerDuchess · 20/11/2020 19:35

The thing is everyone complained about the Welsh rules when it was the other way around - when you could be looking at, say, a bra or a tea strainer in Tesco and couldn’t buy it. So I guess it’s partly a reaction to everyone saying that was illogical.

😂😂😂 Bless him, I wouldn’t know where to start to explain!
megletthesecond · 20/11/2020 19:37

I went into our empty Boots this week to print photos from my phone.

You won't catch me in a restaurant or shop in December but our town centre is currently deserted after 6pm. I'd rather give money to the high street than on line.

Cold, hungry AND miserable raspberry? You're just one of those have to have it all types aren't you? Grin although if you've turned your electric off too, you get a gold star and a hairshirt, so absolutely no trips outside your front door!

bigchris · 20/11/2020 19:37

You people going on about the death of the high street do realise buying online at m&s and Waterstones etc keeps the physical shops going too right ?

sophandbridge · 20/11/2020 19:38

I think it's a bit much to complain about what other people are buying in shops when you are there shopping yourself.
Feministicon · 20/11/2020 19:39

I think people definitely buy more when they can physically browse rather than wading through pages and pages on a website

Thisisworsethananticpated · 20/11/2020 19:39

So what ? Why does this actually
Matter

HumanFemale1 · 20/11/2020 19:39

@user1487194234

It’s allowed so what is the issue Why do people feel the need to make up extra rules 😂
Because according to mumsnet no one is allowed to have any semblance of fun and enjoyment. It'S a PaNdeMic
