People browsing clothes at M&S

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

Those... rat bastards

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/11/2020 19:40

I think it's a bit much to complain about what other people are buying in shops when you are there shopping yourself

Aaah but their reason is soooooo much more "acceptable" Hmm

Mamascoven · 20/11/2020 19:41

You are allowed to buy them. I popped into the foodhall last week and also picked my dc socks, pants & vests up as they were in need of them. So yes, essential.

Ibake · 20/11/2020 19:41

@bigchris

You people going on about the death of the high street do realise buying online at m&s and Waterstones etc keeps the physical shops going too right ?
Not really. John Lewis not reopening all their stores? The Birmingham flagship one ffs. There is going to be a huge rationalisation of branches and we ain't even got going yet.
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 20/11/2020 19:43

@HaggieMaggie

M&S clothing was available in the last lockdown too. Our huge out 9f town one you could buy what you walked through but in our smaller local one you pretty much walk through it all so you could buy what you wanted. I went in the local one last Saturday and bought socks, underwear, some boots and Christmas decorations all before I got to the food hall. Everything went through the food hall till with my breaded chicken and chocolate eclairs.
Yes it was the same in my M&S in the first lockdown, only the upstairs was shut off, I wanted some perfume and the assistant went and got it for me. I want a high street to come back to after all this is over so if things are for sale that I want I will buy them.
loulouljh · 20/11/2020 19:44

Sorry. Forgot the compulsory misery!!!! Will sneak off to be miserable in a socially distanced but of course "safe" way and all will be well...

Most definitely not, shops will disappear and small click and collect booths will appear in their place, a bit like Argos in Sainsbury’s type places
Pootle40 · 20/11/2020 19:45
Hmm
bigchris · 20/11/2020 19:45

Ibake

Exactly so keep going to m&s !

My teenager had a sudden growth spurt, jeans cutting into him. He was incredulous to hear that I couldn't just pop to the shop and buy his usual brand in a size up.
How can clothes for growing children be considered none essential!

It's all very silly. Anyway, thankyou for making me aware that clothes can be bought from m&s, that's handy to know.

LubaLuca · 20/11/2020 19:47

I bought a dress in Sainsbury's yesterday. It's there for the buying, so why not?

Having said that I could have waited until I was in Wales later on and bought anything!

I’m sorry but are teenagers essential 😉😂
Inastatus · 20/11/2020 19:49

I never notice what other people are looking at or buying in shops but I think if they are open what difference does it make what they are buying! I bought a box of Christmas crackers in Waitrose today - I wonder how many people were judging me!

Badgerbadger22 · 20/11/2020 19:49

The PP moaning about other people doing non essential shopping while she was picking up Xmas presents in Argos is amazing - this is exactly what’s wrong with this Country.

😂😂

Badgerbadger22 · 20/11/2020 19:50

And thanks for telling me M&S is open as I need new knickers! Blush

Depends...did you buy easter eggs too?

Live off the birdseed in the garden and ignore the door for a week and ill consider you forgiven

malificent7 · 20/11/2020 19:53

I expect they were looking for those on -trend hair shirts again!

Ibake · 20/11/2020 19:55

@bigchris that's what I'm arguing for! My first comment earlier this evening was sarcastic. If we don't use the high st it's gone and the small independents haven't got a chance if the big retailers close branches, they're totally reliant on the draw of the large shops and footfall. The thought of a click and collect world is so depressing and I'm not even a huge shopper!

OverTheRainbow88 · 20/11/2020 19:56

@GlummyMcGlummerson

I am beginning to wonder if people have got the message that we are in a proper lockdown. Today I picked up presents from Argos, and more than one person went to walk in and were surprised o hear it's clock and collect only. But not as bizarre as the man who tried to move the barriers at Smyths to go shopping confused and then had a huge tantrum when the poor shop assistant broke the news that toy shops weren't essential and the reason that there were barriers and just a table at the entrance was because it's click and collect only.

Proper lockdown? And your going toy shopping and present shopping-
Those 2 statements don’t really match!

Attictroll · 20/11/2020 19:58

I was surprised that it was the same in our m&s but enjoyed a browse. I was not near anyone and masked. It's just the same as clothes in sainsburys and tesco imho.
Really the only people i felt sorry for were the retailers without that loop hole.

TheDowagerDuchess · 20/11/2020 19:59

I haven’t been in a shop at all this lockdown except the co-op at the end of our road and the chemist a couple of doors from it.

I sort of want to but somehow have no time at all despite wfh and simultaneously being a bit bored!

TheWernethWife · 20/11/2020 20:00

You were in their shopping too OP, the M&S food hall isn't essential to go to when you can shop in a supermarket or get your food delivered.

Don't have shopping delivered, never have.

Shock horror, I've been in M & S food hall today and then popped into Sainsbury's after. Mask on, hands sanitised, trolley sanitised. Think I've taken precautions.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/11/2020 20:05

@DontTouchTheMoustache

It's crazy that people are so determined to go into physical shops when you can buy anything online
Why? I wanted a sandwich, they don't deliver those
ZenNudist · 20/11/2020 20:05

The covid wont get you whilst you are deciding to buy the raspberry pannacotta but pick up a pair of pjs and you're screwed.
