People browsing clothes at M&S

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

Going to Tesco last Saturday was the highlight of my weekend. Off to the big Sainsbury's this weekend. I will be browsing in the non essential aisles.

m0therofdragons · 20/11/2020 20:09

You can pay in the food court - I’ve bought dd socks plus food before (not in this lockdown but the last one).

MoodieMare · 20/11/2020 20:10

Shop near me has been fined £17,000 for remaining open when they should have been shut, the article also mentioned 4 phone shops fine £1000 for breaches in the same town.
Hope the staff don't bear the brunt of that or lose their jobs over it.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 20/11/2020 20:12

I can't find it in myself to give a fuck what other people are buying in the shops. Desperately been trying to find my inner rage over non-essential versus essential but I've been drinking since March so it's unlikely to happen.

Seriously, who has time for any of this petty bullshit? Just buy the stuff you want to buy and leave others to it.

SomelikeitHoth · 20/11/2020 20:12

Our m+s is.the same. They have even brought a few things from upstairs like slippers and bras

Squiffany · 20/11/2020 20:14

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

I thought you could buy clothes in M&S. I understood that if a shop is open you can whatever they sell. I bought a completely non essential gift voucher and Percy Pig Christmas tree this week
I need to hear more about the Percy Pig Christmas tree?
ImMoana · 20/11/2020 20:15

I completely understand the confusion.

Somehow WHSmith is ‘essential’ and open on our high street.
The children’s shoe shop? Closed.

My local supermarkets:
Tesco clothes and toys shut, as “on another floor”.
Asda clothes and toys open, as “on the same floor”.

Confused.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/11/2020 20:17

Course wh smiths is essential. Cabt work from home or home educate without stationary or Printer ink etc

Shoe shops should be open given they usually can have time slots for kids school shoe fittings

ImMoana · 20/11/2020 20:20

@Whatwouldscullydo you can order all that online.

Trying children’s shoes on young growing feet before parting with £30?
Essential IMO.

sunshinehappy20 · 20/11/2020 20:23

FFS I don't care that people are non essential shopping I was just surprised as I didn't know it was allowed!!!!

Honestly, people on here can't wait to stick the knife in.

@ImMoana

We bought a kids Clark’s foot measurer, it’s been a life ( foot) saver for my youngest during these lockdown months

PurpleDaisies · 20/11/2020 20:24

You can buy those in supermarkets.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/11/2020 20:25

I agree with the shoe shops being open!

Not can buy online and tbh if its open why not go... better than spending 3 or 4 days waiting in delivery then having to go to town to go to post office to send back anyway..

Couldn't agree more. Mind your own bloody business what other people are doing for christ sake.
Crownofthorns · 20/11/2020 20:29

Oh get a life ffs. Funnily enough people haven’t stopped needing clothes (including what most would deem essentials such as underwear and socks) over the last few weeks and not everyone has the means/ability to buy online.

Exactly. I don’t know what the point of this thread is.
Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 20/11/2020 20:33

I’m glad my local M&S is still open, plenty of them closed in my neighbouring towns last year. I bought my DD some clothes yesterday, she needed some new tracksuit bottoms for PE and I’ve not not been able to find any anywhere online.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/11/2020 20:34

@Squiffany here's the tree. You get some cardboard pigs to hang on it but I decided less is more and I'm sticking to the lights only. You also get a packet of Percy Pigs!

I think competitive isolation will make the Olympics....

I don't know why the pictures rotated

LolaSmiles · 20/11/2020 20:36

ImMoana
Because to change floors means people will have to be using escalators or lifts. Tonnes of people using the same grimy buttons and rails, plus queuing due to needing distancing sounds like a fairly easy way to raise transmission risks.

CathyorClaire · 20/11/2020 20:40

Well, you were there to goggle at them, OP.

Would you prefer everyone to be wandering around naked?

islockdownoveryet · 20/11/2020 20:40

Probably a bit off point but am I the only one worried how busy the shops are going to be after this lockdown.
