To say this is embarrassing?

Friends partner donated to a Christmas charity for vulnerable kids.
He is very rich and can certainly afford it. However, his wife has gone online gushing about what an amazing man he is and how lucky she is.
Aibu to think this is OTT and that she could have praised him in private?

IhateBoswell · 18/11/2020 17:19

I couldn’t get worked up about it. At least he’s donated something 🤷‍♀️

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/11/2020 17:20

What’s the point in donating a large amount if you can’t brag about it? Wink

CSIblonde · 18/11/2020 17:20

It's just virtue signaling. Beyond common. Some people feel the need to do it, as it makes them feel better about themselves.

romeolovedjulliet · 18/11/2020 17:20

typical self promotion, it's good he's done it but hardly worth throwing a party for him. i prefer to go about things quietly and not brag about good deeds helping others etc. it's just showing off look at me twattery imo.

romeolovedjulliet · 18/11/2020 17:22

so you donated some money to charity ? that don't impress me much Smile

PaperTowels · 18/11/2020 17:22

You're criticising your friend for 'gushing' about her partner?

PaperTowels · 18/11/2020 17:23

Wait, I got confused between partner and wife.

Either way, I don't see the harm. There are worse things to do than be proud of your husband.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/11/2020 17:23

I’d say it’s more embarrassing not to swipe past it but to create a thread on mumsnet about it 🤷‍♀️

(Or maybe it’s even more embarrassing that I took the time to comment on the thread)

HotSince63 · 18/11/2020 17:24

Did you even do a good deed if you didn't post about it on social media?

Batshittery · 18/11/2020 17:24

It doesn't impact on your life. I wouldn't waste any thoughts on it

MiaMarshmallows · 18/11/2020 17:25

He is one of the few that has done well out of this pandemic financially.
I just find it embarrassing. He's done something nice but then there are people who do the same who earn a lot less and who don't feel the need to tell the world.
It also doesn't make him a saintly angel !

But he's not the one posting about it, is he?
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/11/2020 17:26

He didn't donate to charity at all.

What he/they actually did was to buy him/themselves some great PR (not that it's worked on OP, it wouldn't with me either) - and the charity happened to benefit as a side-effect.

MiaMarshmallows · 18/11/2020 17:26

Fair. But we certainly all know how well he has done through this year job wise.

OP posts:
Myohmy111 · 18/11/2020 17:27

Do I sense a bit of envy, OP? Just the fact that you feel so strongly about it.
Just asking.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/11/2020 17:28

But he's not the one posting about it, is he?

Maybe it's just me, but I'd be very embarrassed if anybody posted about how great I was for giving a big donation to charity - not that I'd have told them about it - much less if it were my spouse.

Strokethefurrywall · 18/11/2020 17:31

70% (or more!) of social media posts are born entirely of self-promotion and/ or virtuae signaling, you should know this by now!

romeolovedjulliet · 18/11/2020 17:31

i do volunteering for local food bank but don't feel the need to tell the world in rl, it's just something i do.

kursaalflyer · 18/11/2020 17:32

Blimey, jealous much? Managed to do well in a bad year and then gave to charity. Shoot him

stovetopespresso · 18/11/2020 17:42

Yeah I get that its annoying but only in a low-level kind of way, it sounds a bit shallow

MiaMarshmallows · 18/11/2020 17:46

Not jealous. My own partner has had a very successful year financially.

OP posts:
ScrumptiousBears · 18/11/2020 17:47

It does make me laugh when people advertise their donations or charity efforts. There's just no need and it's a bit braggy.

PaperTowels · 18/11/2020 17:48

Actual lolling now Grin

Aren’t you a bit embarrassed to be saying this online? Shouldn’t you just praise him privately?
MiaMarshmallows · 18/11/2020 17:53

Just explaining why I am not jealous. I'm not sitting here saying how much he makes, how proud I am and how wonderful he is.
