to think if you have been social distancing, then you shouldn't need to self isolate?

Let's say hypothetically you had a work colleague who you have been meeting with but you followed social distancing guidelines.

They then test positive and claim that you have been a close contact.

You get the phone call and are told to self isolate - but you know that the only person you have been in contact who has tested positive was someone who you have been socially distanced from.

Why should you self isolate?

Is this about Boris?

chomalungma · 16/11/2020 07:41

@Rudolphian

Is this about Boris?
Might be.

He has claimed that he was following social distancing guidelines and it's a Covid secure workplace.

noblegiraffe · 16/11/2020 07:42

You’re right, in that situation he wouldn’t need to self isolate, if it was confirmed he was following the rules.

ivfbeenbusy · 16/11/2020 07:42

I assume you mean by socially distanced you mean 2m away from.....you know that distance is just an arbitrary one that the government/scientists came up with - it has no medical basis? And in fact coughing/breathing/sneezing can transfer the virus 6ft away or more??? So yes you do need to self isolate

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 16/11/2020 07:42

Even if you were 2 metres from them, you have to self isolate if you were there for more than 15 minutes. Social distancing reduces the spread, not stops it entirely.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 16/11/2020 07:43

But then Boris is a total fucking dick, and if he was 2m away from that MP then I'm 4 metres tall.

wonkylegs · 16/11/2020 07:43

It reduces the risk not eliminates it

WhyNotMe40 · 16/11/2020 07:44

Secondary school teachers aren't allowed to self isolate if there has been a case in the class they taught. Even if they were symptomatic (coughing but returned to class after being sent to be isolated) and on the front row
Because apparently we stay 2m distant "where possible"...

SingANewSongChickenTikka · 16/11/2020 07:44

Social distancing (and other measures) reduce risk, they don’t eliminate it. When you’ve got a confirmed case it make sense to add in additional measures such as contact isolation.

noblegiraffe · 16/11/2020 07:44

No, it’s less than 2m for more than 15 mins.

pasanda · 16/11/2020 07:44

I agree. DD was told to SI after seeing her friend. The brother was positive. She was never even in the same room as him. DD had to isolate.

Ridiculous

Those guidelines say if you were under 2m (and more than 1m) for more than 15 minutes.

What if you were say 3m away for 30 minutes?

OP posts:
WhyNotMe40 · 16/11/2020 07:44

No masks in the classroom either

It might make sense - but is it legally enforceable?

Might have picked it up from a door handle / table surface / crockery / serviette ring / sugar tongs / champagne glass or anything that is present at a day-to-day meeting at 10 Down Street.

@ivfbeenbusy 6ft is less than 2 metres 🙈

But do you legally have to?

There are rules for WHEN people have to self isolate.
I can't see the actual rule that tells him that he has to self isolate.

A previous MP tested positive ages ago, photos of various MPs inc Boris in HoP definitely closer than 2 metres but they didn't isolate because 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes - he might have done.

But it's based on close contact. Not on physically touching things.

a person who has been within 2 metres of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes

That says within 2 meters, so if you stayed apart, as they have claimed, then the OP is correct, you wouldn't need to self isolate.

TheScreamingLady · 16/11/2020 07:51

In my work place if one of our colleagues tests positive we are still expected to attend work, as we are ‘COVID secure’ and shouldn’t have been within 2m of each other.

chomalungma · 16/11/2020 07:51

From his tweet

twitter.com/BorisJohnson/status/1328231093359812610

He says "It doesn't matter that we were all doing social distancing, if you are contacted by Test and Trace, then you have to follow the rules"

Surely it does matter...

My husband works in other peoples homes. He keeps social distancing and he wears a mask. He has had alerts from track and trace that he's had contact with people with COVID but doesn't need to do anything. Company tells them if they are keeping the distance they don't need to isolate and they have no idea who the person is they has contact with. They could have been there for 30 minutes or 5 hours. 🤷‍♀️

AaronPurr · 16/11/2020 07:53

Exactly. They claim Downing street is Covid Secure, one of the most basic measures is ensuring people have been socially distancing from one another.

Obviously this doesn't count for schools and other education settings, because Covid is magic

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/11/2020 07:54

You get the phone call and are told to self isolate
Why should you self isolate?
Why? Well, if you’re contacted by NHS T&T , then it’s now a legal requirement to self isolate regardless of what you personally think the situation should be, so....
