i don't really tip anyone tbh. lots of jobs are well paid. childcare staff in particular are very poorly paid but we'd never tip them. people ordering pizza might be low paid too. it is entitled to expect a tip i think, they are doing their job and getting at least minimum wage for it. it also assumes the person ordering pizza can afford a tip - they might've saved up for a month to afford a takeaway and it might be a real luxury for them.

i agree with you op. it's not being tight to not tip.

wellthatsunusual · 16/11/2020 10:18

@LizaE

If a delivery driver has two orders in opposite directions and one tips and the other doesn't, guess whose is getting their food first, piping hot and fresh?

For the sake of a quid, is it really worth being tight over?

How can he know in advance who will tip?
LizaE · 16/11/2020 10:19

Don't childcare staff get presents at end of term/Christmas etc? So they are tipped. Same as teachers.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/11/2020 10:20

I never tip delivery drivers and don't intend to start. It's expensive enough with delivery charges already.

LizaE · 16/11/2020 10:20

I was talking about regular customers, obviously.

Christmasbiscuit · 16/11/2020 10:21

I always try to tip but don't always have cash on me.

depends what sort of school/nursery you work in really. what I'm saying is that loads and loads of jobs are poorly paid. call centre workers, supermarket workers, toilet cleaners, etc.

if the system is wrong and they don't get paid minimum wage that really isn't my problem. i admit that it's unfair if that is the case, but expecting the customer to give a tip is presumptious as fuck and assumes that they can afford an extra £2 when they might've saved for weeks for a takeaway and a tip of £2 might mean they go without something else.

and yes, before anyone asks, poor people are still entitled to order a takeaway and treat themselves so don't come at me like 'if you can't afford a tip dont order a takeaway' rubbish. that's akin to saying poor people should eat gruel and cabbage soup for every meal.

Do people tip Royal Mail delivery people? Amazon drivers?
I concur! Also, Amazon drivers go 3 weeks initially without pay, so surely they need it more?
emilyfrost · 16/11/2020 10:23

But it isn't going to any time soon, infact, things will probably get worse for peopleas jobs get scarcer and employers can take the piss more. So tip the people earning fuck all per shift.

LizaE Nope. Their financial situation isn’t my problem.

Caramel81 · 16/11/2020 10:23

I don’t tip unless paying with cash and I’ll round things up to the nearest £1 and tell them to keep the 20p change or whatever it is.
I do this in taxis too and round up to the nearest £1.
In a restaurant I tip 10% if it’s really good service and 0% if it’s average or crap. I’ve worked in Pizza Hut for years when I was younger so I know how busy and stressful (and underpaid) that line of work is but I’m not tipping anyone who doesn’t make a proper effort. Eating out/getting takeaways is expensive enough as it is

Lockheart · 16/11/2020 10:27

I had no idea this was a thing outside of America.

I don't use cash at the best of times, let alone during covid. I pay for the takeaway (including delivery fee) online by card.

I don't think I've ever had a delivery person hang around waiting for a tip. Often by the time I've got to the door they've left the food in the porch and are walking away.

It wasn't obvious to me, sorry. I order takeaway once a week and even in my rural village where there are only two takeaways to choose from, it's rarely the same driver twice. So I didn't realise that some people have a driver who knows them.
KitKat1985 · 16/11/2020 10:29

When paying cash I usually just round to the nearest pound and tell them to keep the change.

However in current world climate I usually pay by card when ordering and don't have much cash on me anymore, so not tipping currently no. Most of the takeaway companies around here charge for deliveries anyway which I assume goes to the driver.

LizaE · 16/11/2020 10:33

what I'm saying is that loads and loads of jobs are poorly paid. call centre workers, supermarket workers, toilet cleaners, etc.

Those people get minimum wage though. Delivery drivers don't. They probably work at a loss some days, after paying for fuel/insurance etc. If they all jack it in, who will bring you your food then?

It's not a hardship to add on a quid if you are buying a takeaway. It's very very mean spirited not to do so out of principle, or because 'no one ever tips me, wah wah wah'.

These are some if the skintest and most desperate people. Tip them ffs 🤷‍♀️

wellthatsunusual · 16/11/2020 10:35

Why not just increase the delivery charge? Far more fair than asking people to tip.

No. If the takeaways struggle to get staff due to poor conditions then maybe they will start paying them properly.
PaperTowels · 16/11/2020 10:41

I always tip £2.

Glossyrocks · 16/11/2020 10:42

Are they? Personally I worked as a delivery driver whilst at uni and earnt some extra money to go out drinking with. Of course for some it's a last resort as they cannot secure anything else and they have to pay the bills, but certainly here at least it's mainly young adults who want a bit of extra money rather than people relying on it to feed their families.

vanillandhoney · 16/11/2020 10:48

Why is it the customers job to enable these shit working conditions?

Chains like Dominos and companies like UberEats make enough money that they can afford to pay their drivers a decent wage. It's not Joe Bloggs' job to tip them so that the CEO of Dominos can make even more money.

TheGoogleMum · 16/11/2020 10:48

We dont tip. Back in the days of cash we might have said to keep the change but usually tried to have the right money. I dont get any tips at my job.

Darker · 16/11/2020 10:49

How can you possibly know this?

Covid has forced many people to find alternatives ways to pay the bills, through no fault of their own.

Queenofthemadouse · 16/11/2020 10:52

No I don't. I do tip if I go to a restaurant and the service is good. I rarely tip in a cafe either.

This 👏👏👏

NewNameForAdvice · 16/11/2020 10:58

They don't earn very much as rely on tips.

I always tip lower paid workers since they provide a service and rely on tips for income.

KrisKringlesLeftNostril · 16/11/2020 10:59

I have never once tipped a delivery driver. Don't know anybody who does.
