Well I don't get the deification of NHS workers either. They get paid a salary for doing their job too. I have plenty of friends and relatives who are nurses, midwives, physios etc and none of them want to be treated as some sort of angel because of the job they do. What they want is for patients and their families to be civil to them whilst they do a difficult job, for management to appreciate the strain they are working under and for the government to pay them appropriate and fairly. None of those things are achieved by putting posters in windows and banging pots and pans once a week.

EatPrayYoga · 16/11/2020 18:54

I don't tip either! I think if I'm paying cash then I often give an extra couple of quid but now I mainly pay online and it hadn't occurred to me to tip! I feel bad now. All the delivery drivers are so lovely as well Blush

3ismylot · 16/11/2020 18:54

I think while it is nice to tip it should not be expected.
Everyone is paid a wage for the job they do and that is all they should expect to be paid. I say that as an ex-waitress. I gave everybody the same service and never expected to be tipped but I was obviously grateful if they did.
DH does a lot of deliveries with amazon, uber eats, deliveroo and just eat and again appreciates tips but never expects them, he makes good money without the tips (£500+ a week on top of his normal full time day job) people are already paying inflated costs on their orders plus delivery fees in some cases so they should never be expected to tip as well.
I personally tip in restaurants if I receive good service but I do not tip any other services, however, now I think about it I am unsure why I feel the need to tip one sector over another Hmm, obviously, it is different in countries such as the US where the staff are expected to get tips to make up their wages (and that is a whole different argument about customers effectively paying wages instead of the employer!) but there should never be pressure or expectation for tipping here in the UK.

In the States, it's illegal for postal workers to accept tips, lest they somehow be corrupted by it ... the garbagemen, however, are allowed to collect tips

As you good people would say: go figure Grin

Postal service are government job, they are not suppose to play favorite because the tip they received. It can cause a lot of problems.
BertieBotts · 16/11/2020 19:18

I used to have a friend who did deliveries, she said only about half of people tip and if there wasn't any stairs she didn't mind. But that it was shit going out in bad weather so I always tip when the weather is crap now.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 16/11/2020 19:19

I always tip.

firesong · 16/11/2020 19:24

No I don't tip for takeaway deliveries. In fact sometimes I struggle with tipping altogether. When my haircut, colour and blowdry (a couple of times a year) costs me £120 a time, a tip feels ridiculous. I tip trainees though.

I used to work as an apprentice in beauty many years ago, as a teenager. I worked full time and got £80 a week. Tips were amazing and I loved them, but I didn't expect them. Nobody should.

HeronLanyon · 16/11/2020 19:26

I always tip. Truth is I only use one Restaurant for takeaway (great Indian restaurant) so maybe i feel more
Connected to their drivers.
When it was cash I’d round up or add a couple of pounds. Now I give 2.00 no
Matter what I’ve ordered.

It's a federal vs municipal government thing. In some cities the garbagemen-tipping might be illegal, but not where I am. The Post Office is very serious about Duty and I love it.

Wow lots of responses thanks everyone! I'm still not understanding why so many people think i should have tipped.. think i was expecting everyone to agree with me 😅 .. i do understand everybody has their own reasons and if it makes you feel better then great! But they get paid NMW for doing their job that they chose to do.. it's a job... just like i work in an office and get paid ever so slightly above NMW .. people saying about bad weather etc.. well, they are in a car..? I drive 40 mins to work then back again in all weather but dont get paid extra for it or get paid for wear and tear on my car.. surely taking a delivery driver job, they expect to be out driving in their car in the rain? A PP said it's like they are doing a personal service that she can't be bothered to do so they deserve a tip.. but that's their job that they get paid to do..

Alot of people are talking about how delivery drivers are risking their lives because of covid... fair enough there is a point in there.. but im thinking more generally.. like think back to pre- covid and also more UK rather than other countries as we have NMW and i do tip when i go abroad as i realise it's different

Blueberries0112 · 16/11/2020 22:53

they drive all over the place all day.

Duemarch2021 · 16/11/2020 23:02

@Blueberries0112

Yeah cos that's the job they applied for.. what about lorry drivers?

Duemarch2021 · 16/11/2020 23:08

Also want to add for PPs who say "you've paid for the pizza but not paid the driver" ..

Does a pizza really cost £18 to make? All companies choose their prices to cover the cost of any work.. then add on enough to make a profit too..the wage of delivery driver along with electricity costs, staff wages, ingredients etc have already been cleverly worked out in how much they charge for the pizza... they pay the delivery drivers the NMW per hour which is what the worker agreed to when they signed the contract and applied for the job

@KatherineJaneway

North America is a disgrace, I admit I don't always tip the 'minimum expectation' I still give $10 or so dollars which is a considerable tip (around £7-8). The tip culture there is not good, I have heard staff openly slagging off or giving dirty looks if their tips are not as high as they think.

Whether you think it is a disgrace or not you should tip the going rate if you eat out there. Waiters / waitresses most often earn pittance and survive off tips.

With respect, it's not my responsibility to ensure staff are paid. Especially when on holiday and you have to eat out more often then tipping is very expensive. Food in America isn't cheap. I honestly couldn't afford to tip 20% of every meal.

If waiting staff actually were paid the living wage it would be nowhere near 20% of a bill per hour.

Anyone watch Below Deck on Netflix? It's a chartered yacht and shows the crew taking on different charters for 2/3 days then showing their tip. They can get tipped up to £20k between 11 of them for 3 days work. If someone tips them £12k they bitch about it and call them tight. The tipping in N America is obscene.

LizaE · 17/11/2020 00:39

But they don't get nmw op, that's the point. And most of them aren't in nice warm cars, they are on mopeds that are dangerous to drive in bad weather.

ImnotCarolineHirons · 17/11/2020 00:49

Eh?! How many hours is he working to make £500 a Week delivering food? Above a FT job?
£2k a month doesn't sound like piecemeal delivery driver rates to me, or what seems to be the standard income from this thread.
I smell 💩

ImnotCarolineHirons · 17/11/2020 00:54

@Duemarch2021 did you read the replies where people explained that many many drivers are NOT paid NMW, as they are not employees, that the companies insist on them being self employed and paying by each delivery done not hourly?

Ok so Dominos may pay nmw but many do not.

ClaireP20 · 17/11/2020 00:56

You are bang out of order not to tip. These poor sods earn hardly anything and live for their tips. I always keep loose change by the door in a tray to tip take away deliveries/sainsburys food delivery etc.

I genuinely cannot understand how many tight arses there are on here. Even when we go on holiday to the caravan park, even my 7 year old knows you leave a fiver tip on the table for the cleaners.

And also, if they drive around here in East London, they get mugged alot..they really take their lives in their hands.

Takeaways in my area pay their drivers really well.........my friends dp earns £90 a night as a driver, from 5pm until 11ish. He does pay is own petrol but still, as a side job it isn't bad. And pays for all their luxuries and holidays.

I do tip tho, usually I'll round it up and tell them to keep the change so between £2/£3

Actually it is your responsibility over there. Tips for wait staff are expected and most people factor the 20% tip when choosing where to eat.

Peppafrig · 17/11/2020 06:05

Not since Covid it’s all meant to be contact free. Not that I ever have cash on me . Plus I believe if anyone deserves a tip it should be the supermarket workers .

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/11/2020 06:10

We pay online and leave a cash tip on the windowsill. They are always very grateful.
