Our postie, delivery drivers, bin men all get Christmas gifts.

vanillandhoney · 16/11/2020 15:54

@LizaE

So people that don't tip because posties, hermes, supermarket delivery drivers, binmen, window cleaners etc don't get tips, don't you give them cards at Christmas with a fiver in?
Nope.

Not at what my window cleaner charges I don't Grin
I tip the postie though, because he does a lot for the community - above and beyond you see

Isitsixoclockalready · 16/11/2020 15:56

I don’t think that it’s a right or wrong thing - I usually tip taxi drivers, waiters and hairdressers but I know people that do tip pizza delivery drivers. I have never had any takeaway delivery driver hang around waiting for one though.

Good point, I always give the postie a Xmas tip too.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/11/2020 16:01

And why on earth would people tip bin men these days? I'm old enough to remember when they had to lift smelly bins, carry and empty the things themselves, whereas today's bins are left at the kerb and the truck does most of the work

I handle them more myself than the men do, just pulling them from the garden ...

CorianderLord · 16/11/2020 16:11

@LizaE

Who are these people earning a living off tips in the UK when that is illegal

There are plenty of people doing that.

Well they shouldn't be - minimum wage should be minimum bloody wage. People can't afford to tip every person in any kind of service job. Postmen, couriers, delivery men, waitresses, bar staff, hair dressers - where does it end?

And what's the cut off for having to tip? I certainly couldn't afford it when I was on £17k a year and I still think I was allowed to have the occasional treat even if I could just scrape it.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 16/11/2020 16:17

I’m shocked people still pay for takeaways with cash tbh. I can’t remember the last time I phoned a take away to order. I never have cash so unless they want £2 in copper I don’t tip.

How do people actually tip the postie? Pre-cv working I would never see him, I rarely see him now tbh, and they’re always different at different times too.

Binmen? Not a chance I'd be tipping the bin men. If they see you come out of the house and head towards your car, they deliberately block the drive. Ask them politely if they could move a little to let you out and it's 'nah love, we're not allowed to move the lorry until we're all back in the cab, we'll move when we're finished' and then they sit there laughing. Out on the main road, they stop in the middle of the road to block the traffic instead of pulling in to the side. They toss the bins all over the place, breaking them, then we get charged for replacements. There's no way they'd be getting a present from me.

No. I only see the post person once in a blue moon so highly unlikely to see them to be able to get a card to them. Hermes/supermarket/other deliveries - never get same person twice so would seem weird to me giving a card and gift to a total stranger who I will never see again. Binmen - they come early in the morning when I am stil asleep or at least still in bed. I live in a second floor flat so rather impractical to go running downstairs and outside into the car park if their nose wakes my up, to attempt to hand over a card. They will probably have finished with our communal bins by the time I get there.
ClinkeyMonkey · 16/11/2020 16:37

@DuzzyFuck
That's such a lovely gesture on your part and I'm sure it was gratefully received, but it's a one-off gift and not quite the same as consistent tips relied upon to top up crappy wages. I suppose if somebody received enough boxes of chocolates, they could set up a wee market stall and sell themGrin

Nancydrawn · 16/11/2020 16:38

@ClinkyMonkey

Laughing here at the poster who said that childcare workers get tips in the form of presents etc. Might try handing the delivery driver a scented candle or a box of Thorntons and see how that goes down!!
This is actually quite funny: it's what I do for the postal worker at the holidays.

In the States, it's illegal for postal workers to accept tips, lest they somehow be corrupted by it. (People have actually gotten fired for this!) You may give them gifts, but not gift cards, and the gifts have to be under $20. So every year I leave a box of chocolates out at the holidays with a note to say thank you, and my mailwoman loves it. (I also gave her a bottle of hand sanitizer at the beginning of the pandemic, when supplies were scarce, and she left me the most lovely note in my mailbox.)

Nancydrawn · 16/11/2020 16:40

The garbagemen, however, are allowed to collect tips, and every year I wait with a big envelope to give to them--invariably they arrive when I'm in the other room and I have to go haring down the drive in bare feet to catch them before they leave.

Meepmeeep · 16/11/2020 16:41

Used to then someone I knew started delivering pizzas and told me it wasn’t expected by the drivers so I stopped.

As you good people would say: go figure Grin

CorianderLord · 16/11/2020 17:06

I mean the posties and bin men get paid more than I do...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/11/2020 17:08

Slightly off-topic, but I remember seeing a (hopefully joking) sign on the side of a bin lorry saying "Guaranteed Satisfaction - or Twice Your Rubbish Back!"

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/11/2020 17:16

I do think it is silly to tip every little thing. That's what I hate about hotels, you question yourself a lot "do I need to tip this person?"

I also think it's sad as it effectively monetises and mechanises human kindness and interaction. It can't be nice for the staff member either, as customers might suspiciously interpret every smile or tiny little favour you do for them as not being done out of kindness but purely because you want money - like you're a performing monkey doing a little dance and holding his hand out for a peanut.

I have to say, this is one reason why I'd never ask for a tiny favour or quickest bit of basic information from a solicitor, as I'd be paranoid that they'd bill me for their time at £100+ per hour or part thereof.

LizaE · 16/11/2020 17:34

You're living in the wrong place. Where I used to live, the binmen would empty the bin and replace it in the garden even if we forgot to put it out.

Where I live now, there is no kerb collection. We have to take our rubbish to communal bins dotted around the streets ourselves and its collected from there (not the uk).

Oblomov20 · 16/11/2020 17:44

I normally tip £2.

LadyInParis · 16/11/2020 17:53

In this situation though with Covid, they are working shitty minimum wage jobs in shitty weather and despite the new rules around no contact delivery they are still risking their health to bring you your luxury. Given the low wage and all the above, I would tip.

LadyInParis · 16/11/2020 18:01

The divide between the adoration for nhs workers and lack thereof for people like delivery drivers who bring your luxury so you are still able to have your comfort and feel a little more normal in these tough times is strange. The nhs workers are paid same as the drivers are, except they are given more support re protective clothing etc. My point is I see people with such respect and clapping for nhs but for shop workers and delivery drivers who allow us our needed food and our small comforts in these times seem looked over to my mind. I know it’s a bit off topic but my point is what is a quid or two in the scheme of it all to show some kindness? Distance drop off doesn’t eradicate chances of catching Covid especially with lack of ppe and amount of people they come into contact with to earn a very low wage that they need to live off just like everyone else

Nikhedonia · 16/11/2020 18:08

Huh? You think we should have been clapping for pizza delivery people in the same way as we clapped the NHS workers who were, quite literally, saving lives?

Genuine question, how do you tip while still social distancing? Do you put the money on the floor and ask them to pick it up after you close the door? Pre Covid, if paying by cash I would usually tell the delivery person to keep the change, but now takeaways are paid for online in advance, and I don't go anywhere near rhe delivery person.

I also don't have much cash on me - a couple of £5 notes that I am keeping for tips for my hairdresser, and a bit of small change. I could start tipping using that, but once it runs out there won't be any more as I'm not spending any cash so not getting any change.

What are you on about? As it goes I would happily have chucked £100 to each of the nurses who took wonderful care of DS a few months back in hospital, but they cannot accept it. Whether someone tips or not isn't an indication of the 'adoration' someone receives, most people think delivery drivers do a great job and as has been said many times on this thread, should be paid a fairer wage by their employer. As part of a more philosophical discussion though, yes NHS as a collective are more important, as a country with a lot of obesity we could survive without the ability to have takeaways delivered- and that's not saying individuals don't work hard, but if you're comparing them then that's the truth.
