Some companies don't think it is exactly their job to maintain a delivery service

What? Confused. They offer a delivery service because they realise the value to their business, what they don't want to do is to pay the delivery drivers fairly in a lot of cases. It's not like places have to offer delivery and then baulk at having to have one, but they offer it as it increases their customer base and ultimately their profits. Again, if they offer delivery, charge for delivery as most (rightly) do, then from a customers perspective they don't 'owe' anything else.

Blueberries0112 · 16/11/2020 15:03

If they see the value , they would have provided them transportation and gas, but no, they only pay them to take the pizza to the person and the person pay their service

Backbee · 16/11/2020 15:04

Sigh. Yes, the onus is on them, not the customer to provide a fair wage.

vanillandhoney · 16/11/2020 15:05

@Blueberries0112

Because you should really go and pick up your own pizza. Some companies don't think it is exactly their job to maintain a delivery service. In reality, the delivery person is more like a self employed, he earn a little income here and there. My workplace is a fast food and they just started partnered delivery service but the delivery service is a separate company so whatever they charged is not my workplace problem.
If companies don't want to pay for a delivery service, then they don't have to. What they shouldn't do is provide one, and expect customers to pay tips in order to fund it!

Either you provide a delivery service and pay the drivers properly, or you just offer collection only. Partnering up with companies like Deliveroo or UberEats is also totally optional.

What they charge may not be the problem of your workplace, but it's also not the problem of the customer. Again, it's not the customers' job to pay extra. It's up to the business to pay their staff decent wages to start with.

Yes, because they want to save money....

That's not the customers' problem and it's not the customers' job to top up people's wages because business owners are too cheap to pay people properly in the first place.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/11/2020 15:08

And nothing could be fairer since it's entirely their right to decide - but if everyone "picked up their own" then the pizza delivery jobs wouldn't exist at all would they?

Nikhedonia · 16/11/2020 15:12

Because you should really go and pick up your own pizza.

Should I? Confused

The pizza restaurant offers different deals based on collection or delivery. They have asked for £20 for the pizza to be delivered. Why should I pay a tip when I've already paid more to have it delivered?! Hmm

Nikhedonia · 16/11/2020 15:15

A pizza delivery, you paid the pizza and the person who made the pizza but you barely paying the service who delivered the pizza to you

That's wrong. I've paid £x for a pizza and for it to be delivered. It's up to the business owner to charge what it charge the appropriate amount for a pizza to be made and delivered. That's kind of how running a business works.

MummaBear4321 · 16/11/2020 15:15

I usually tip at restaurants, quite generously if the server has been friendly, helpful etc. I never even thought of tipping the pizza guy. I dont tip my postman or my amazon delivery guy or my DPD guy. For me, tips are for those who do something very well or go out of their way to help. By tipping the pizza guy for walking to my door with pizza I should tip everyone who walks to my door. And before anyone says 'low wages', yes, I know. I worked in retail for 5 years.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/11/2020 15:17

Thanks a lot for clarifying that, Nancydrawn - glad to hear that it's not the only available option with American hotels.

I wasn't meaning the time to press the button per se, but the added time of the lift man greeting you and asking you which floor, you telling him and then having to rifle around for some money to give him. Not all that many additional seconds, but without it, the non-task would take half a second.

IceFrost · 16/11/2020 15:22

No I never tip delivery drivers.

Why would I? They get paid to do their job.

IceFrost · 16/11/2020 15:25

@Yesyoudoknowme

Please tip pizza deliverers! My son is one and goes out in all weathers on the scooter getting soaked for a zero hours minimum wage. *@spillthetea* 'I don't understand why this industry gets tips, but other low paid jobs don't.' so you don't tip a hairdresser? or waiter? and they don't 'just hand you your food' they deliver it - just 'handing you your food' would be if you went into a takeaway and ordered it yourself, having driven there yourself. They do this so you don't have to get up out of your warm chair, get dressed and go out in the cold wet weather. Hmm
I’m guessing he gets paid a wage to do his job. Hmm
Blueberries0112 · 16/11/2020 15:26

I do think it is silly to tip every little thing. That's what I hate about hotels, you question yourself a lot "do I need to tip this person?"

And restaurants too. I usually go to restaurants where I stand in line and make my order and pick up my order. I never have to tip there

But food delivery services, I don't know because they have a job to do to make sure your food is still warm. They have to deal with gas, directions, dogs, etc and none of it is included in of their paid service.

Blueberries0112 · 16/11/2020 15:27

"don't tip a hairdresser" actually we do haha

LizaE · 16/11/2020 15:33

So people that don't tip because posties, hermes, supermarket delivery drivers, binmen, window cleaners etc don't get tips, don't you give them cards at Christmas with a fiver in?

sneakysnoopysniper · 16/11/2020 15:38

We have started getting Deliveroo for which we pay by card. We always add a tip because these people earn shit money and are out in all weathers. Its not a job I would want to do.

CorianderLord · 16/11/2020 15:42

I never tip - I don't ever use cash so never have any

sneakysnoopysniper · 16/11/2020 15:44

No I would not tip the postie or regular courier because these people work for the company and they get a proper wage. However the riders who do food delivery get paid per delivery and they only get paid from the time they pick up the food til when it gets to you. They dont get anything for the time they spend waiting at the restaurant or going on to their next call. They also have to pay for their own petrol and insurance. Its a thankless job for shit money.

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 15:45

I wouldn't tip dominos as always pay by card there but tip Chinese as pay with cash, I just tell the guy to keep the change.

LindaEllen · 16/11/2020 15:45

I never tip, unless I'm paying in cash (rare these days) and it's less than a couple of quid change, then I'll say keep the change.

I know being a delivery driver is a rubbish, low paid job - but there are plenty of others that don't tip.

For those who said you should tip because they're delivering to you and being a slave because you can't be arsed, if everyone stopped ordering there would be many people without a job at all. Would that be a better option for you?

I don't get tipped for my job, ever. I won't tip other people for doing theirs, as I feel I'm helping them enough by using their service.

CorianderLord · 16/11/2020 15:48

Since when did delivery drivers live off tips? Dominoes pays them a living wage. Deliveroo and the like all charge £3-5 per delivery.

Who are these people earning a living off tips in the UK when that is illegal??

vanillandhoney · 16/11/2020 15:49

Um, courier companies pay per delivery too. So by your standards, you absolutely should be tipping them!

I used to work closely with DPD. The drivers had to pay to use the vans. They also had to pay for fuel in order to do their jobs. They didn't get paid a set wage, they got paid per delivery and often worked 12 hour days to get everything delivered so they'd get paid in full each day.

There's a reason couriers work Sundays, Bank Holidays and evenings when Royal Mail don't - because if they didn't deliver on those days, they wouldn't get paid!

LizaE · 16/11/2020 15:50

There are plenty of people doing that.

DuzzyFuck · 16/11/2020 15:50

@ClinkyMonkey

Laughing here at the poster who said that childcare workers get tips in the form of presents etc. Might try handing the delivery driver a scented candle or a box of Thorntons and see how that goes down!!
@ClinkyMonkey During the first lockdown each time I went to do a big shop I put a box of chocolates in my trolley, paid for them and then handed them to the cashier as a thank you for working long hours and putting themselves on the front line while we all hid away at home. They were extremely gratefully received every time.

I work in a restaurant and to be honest if someone thanked me with a nice candle or some chocolates I'd be equally as pleased as with a tip!

@LizaE

No, no one goes over and above any more, customer service is absolutely shocking these days. There's such a "not my job mate" attitude I don't tip mediocrity.
