AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

@MerylStropp - many of us don’t follow (or believe in) Advent/Twelfth Night so put decorations up and down when we want. There aren’t rules on the timing.

Livelovebehappy · 15/11/2020 20:08

Also Xmas supermarket shopping slots are available earlier this time. Or at least Asda’s are. Last year i’m sure it was end of November before you could book a Christmas delivery slot, but Asda made their slots available a couple of weeks ago. Seems everything being brought forward this year.

@blonde87 can't beat feeling festive and a bit of Slade especially after the shit year we've all had x

Blonde87 · 15/11/2020 20:13

@Ballsdeep00 very true 💕 I may have taken it too far now after my 4th wine I'm now onto the Pogues and craving a mince pie 😂 Merry Christmas! Xx

HazeyJaneII · 15/11/2020 20:14

We did lists with Christmas music and hot chocolate and candy canes this afternoon, will get the house sorted and Xmas decorations up at the end of the week.
The kids are really looking forward to Christmas, even though it will be different this year, the dds (13 and 14) said they want to have that 'sparkly Christmas feeling for longer'.

It will be nice to have all the fairy lights and twinkly shit, and an excuse to drink Bailey's.

Watching Lampoon's Christmas Vacation as we speak

Tree not up yet though

Ballsdeep00 · 15/11/2020 20:15

@Blonde87 I've been eating mince pies for the last 2 weeks 😂 merry Christmas to you to love x

I can see why people are doing it and I don’t have a problem with it if it makes anyone feel better. I would say that in recent years I’ve seen trees and Christmas decorations go up earlier and earlier so that it’s not unusual to see a lot of them up by mid November.

Personally I think it’s too soon and risks making Christmas itself less special which doesn’t even begin until Christmas Day. When they go up so early lots of people want them down on Boxing Day or even Christmas night! I think it’s a shame to sever the connection to the history and traditions of Christmas. I do enjoy advent and the build up but when I finally do put my tree up a week before Christmas it still feels really special and magical on the day and the whole of the Christmas festival into the new year.

Also for me it’s still autumn and I’m still enjoying the leaves and the moody weather. I’d hate to always be jumping ahead and not living in the moment.

burglarbettybaby · 15/11/2020 20:24

It's a huge trend on Mrs Hinch and other Facebook pages. I can't face it yet. Buy I have put up fairy lights and bought extra things in preparation.

Sunflower20001 · 15/11/2020 20:24

Because people been a bit of festive cheer in what's been a pretty crap year for some with lockdown, not seeing family, lack of income, redundancies....
I was adament I wasn't putting mine up til 4th December (when I finish for Mat leave) but I've got a new tree coming Tuesday and I'm tempted!

@Deepseafiver - mine go up weekend before Christmas but always, without fail come down on NYE - Christmas is over and fresh start for the next year. Had the same traditions as long as I can remember.

I usually put mine up the weekend before Christmas, but this year I'm going to put it up the first weekend of December. Need a bit of festive cheer in my life!

ScaredNeedHelp · 15/11/2020 20:28

@lunar1

Because it's a shitty year, we are in lockdown, everything is closed and cancelled. It passed some time decorating and it's fun for the children. I've also opened the tin of quality streets 🤣
We opened our quality street in October when we had to isolate! 😂 Tree isn't up yet though!
inlectorecumbit · 15/11/2020 20:29

My neighbours put theirs up 1st November. One because its been a crap year and also her DH works away and this is the first time in 5 years he will be home in the run up for Christmas. They are excited- and seeing giant reindeers lit up in the garden makes me smile.
So why not !!!!

Your last paragraph is a major reason for me not jumping ahead. I adore autumn and want to hold onto it until the very last golden leaf drops. I don’t want to bypass a single moment
Bagamoyo1 · 15/11/2020 20:31

Surely anyone who puts a real tree up now will have a pile of pine needles and a bare tree by Christmas Day?

musicalmrs · 15/11/2020 20:40

Lots of neighbours here seem to have put their decorations up. While I think it's a bit early, my main issue is that I'd be utterly fed up of them by Christmas itself! We normally put them up a weekend or two into December, and I'm already keen to get my house back to normal by before New Year. If I put them up now I think they'd be gone by the first week of December!

Deepseafiver · 15/11/2020 20:40

I think its fine for people to do what ever suits them but I find a lot if value in the older traditions, I'm not especially religious but people have been celebrating the seasons in a certain way for 100s even 1000s of years and I enjoy that connection to the past and ultimately the earth and seasons.

CountrysideIsForEveryone · 15/11/2020 20:42

A street near us has had multiple houses with lights up continuously since March, although generic lights, not giant Santa illuminations. I assumed it was to cheer up the people doing all their daily exercise at night, or some kind of vigil for the end of the pandemic. I quite like it and look forward to more lights brightening the winter nights.

Apparently the number 2 most watched thing on Netflix in the UK right now is this year's Netflix Christmas movie (if I understand the Netflix chart thing correctly).

Deepseafiver · 15/11/2020 20:44

@Abracadabra12345 Absolutely, I think you can find magic and beauty in all the seasons but autumn is especially beautiful and rich!

Aposterhasnoname · 15/11/2020 20:45

Genuine question. How does a toddler know firstly what Christmas decorations are, and secondly, that Christmas is coming?

DominaShantotto · 15/11/2020 20:46

Early Autumn - lovely... by this point where the leaves are all sludge and slippery and the parks are mud... nah fuck it - I'll ditch that bit and go to tinsel.

JaceLancs · 15/11/2020 20:46

Boredom and trying to cheer themselves up
I normally trim up about 2 weeks before but am seriously considering the 1st of December as will get me in the spirit - not done much shopping yet as prefer not to shop online and hoping places will be open in time
