AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

Main tree is a real tree so it will be second weekend in December, as per usual. May stick the kids trashy tree up a bit earlier though. (First weekend in December early, not Mid November early!)

jazzandh · 15/11/2020 19:46

Where we are the local priest put a FB message out, to light up the gloom of lockdown!

Whilst I normally put my outside decorations up at the beginning of December, I have out them up this weekend, as it may spread a little winter cheer.

My indoor decorations will wait until December..

superram · 15/11/2020 19:49

We usually do the first weekend of dec (5th this year). Hoping we’ll be out of lockdown so I can get out and go to pubs and restaurants do doing 28th November as will give us something to fill an afternoon and it’s the first Sunday of advent so not too early.

VintageMemories · 15/11/2020 19:50

We're waiting until the usual time for us (very end of November/beginning of December), but I'm not surprised some want to do it earlier this year. Many are feeling an increased need for festivity and cheer.

Here's to 2021. I hope you win the lottery.

Inkpaperstars · 15/11/2020 19:53

I get why people are doing it, something to do that might cheer them up. It makes sense.

We couldn't do it as our flat in chaos, boxes etc...needs a lot doing and decorations would just be more clutter, but to honest even without that I wouldn't put mine up this early anyway. I don't enjoy seeing other people decorate for Christmas this early either but if they get something from it i am pleased for them.

I just think Christmas will be a bit different this year and decorations might be one of the few things people can do...so if they have done all that in mid November, what will they do to make Christmas itself feel special?

NewPapaGuinea · 15/11/2020 19:53

I’m a firm believer they should be winter lights and stay up until March. Bloody sad when they get turned off as soon as January starts.

Frouby · 15/11/2020 19:53

Cos Baileys was £12 for a litre bottle in morrisons on Saturday so I need an excyse to start early on the Christmas drinks.

Also we lost fil at easter to cunting covid, dds July birthday was shivering in a park, she's missed gcses and prom, ds lost his swimming again at lockdown 2.0 and they have both lost watersports again.

If the tree cheers them up (it does) then fuck it, it's hurting no one, it looks cosy, it's given me an incentive to have a good tidy round and we enjoyed doing it. It won't come down until after the new year as is our tradition (usually 3rd/4th) and its cheered everyone up. Plus it means if we can get out after the 2nd December we can without having a weekend decorating.

MushMonster · 15/11/2020 19:55

I think is for a bit of cheer indeed.
My neighbours have fairy lights on the window sill and they do cheer me up when I arrive home.
I am waiting till the first weekend of December. We work outside the house and have 4 cats who like playing with the decorations, so the tree may have to wait till a few days before Christmas.

roarfeckingroarr · 15/11/2020 19:57

Ugh the dust by January

anothergloriousmorning · 15/11/2020 19:57

From what I've seen it's because it's been such a shit year, they wanted to do something to cheer themselves up.

I won't be doing it because I know I'll be fed up with it all before December if I do. We usually put the tree up sometime during the first week of December and by Boxing Day I'm itching to pack it all away again and finally be able to dust properly!

I'm enjoying seeing everyone else's trees though.

Reborn2020 · 15/11/2020 19:58

Each to their own.
I haven't but will probably put up early (for me) at the start of December.

Personally I have had enough of 2020 and want a fresh New Year with a Covid vaccine and all back to normal (fingers crossed) - will I get my wish?

feellikeanalien · 15/11/2020 19:58

Went to one of our local market towns this evening. Christmas lights are already on and the Christmas tree is also lit up.

It did bring a smile to my face and DD loved it. When she put the Christmas music on though it made me cry. I think it was because I know we won't be able to go to any Christmas services and also of how shit this Christmas will be compared to last.

The kids were having a Christmas singalong session to the Apple TV this morning (I'm out of Whamageddon already for the year).

If it brings them joy, and brings some people a sense of purpose in judging us and complaining - then it's win/win really.

JudithShakespeare · 15/11/2020 20:01

Because there’s fuck all else to do

So what will you do next weekend and the weekend after ... if you've put the decorations up this weekend just for something to do?

Daphnise · 15/11/2020 20:02

They are bored and don't have much to do and it gives an illusion of something to look forward to.

If so little makes them happy.......

Feedingthebirds1 · 15/11/2020 20:02

I'm a total hypocrite!

I know that if we put ours up earlier than about two weeks before Christmas, by the 25th they'd have lost that ooomph and just be part of the furniture. To me they wouldn't be special any more.

But I'm loving seeing them in other houses as I go past - that quick glimpse of light and sparkle cheers me up no end.

Livelovebehappy · 15/11/2020 20:03

Well there’s not much else to do on a weekend currently is there? Personally I prefer to do it as near to Xmas as possible as I hate the clutter, but I can see why people are doing it early this year.

Blonde87 · 15/11/2020 20:03

Me and my eldest daughter have just put ours up (she mithered) I feel all festive now with Slade on 😂 my tree looks a bit tired and shite though so won't be posting any pics on social media ha x

FippertyGibbett · 15/11/2020 20:03

My exterior lights are up. I hope they bring a bit of happiness to those passing by 🎄🎅🏽☃️

Poorpigletsrevenge · 15/11/2020 20:05

We usually put ours up on 1st December and remove on NYE, but I think we might put them up earlier this year.

Good to know we won’t be inadvertently joining in some campaign or meme we were unaware of.

Thanks to all who replied Wine

Is your heart 3 sizes to small? Why do you care?
If Facebook annoys you the delete the app!

Baycob · 15/11/2020 20:05

I haven’t put mine up ( and won’t until the the 1st of Dec for fear of judgement), but I love to drive around and see the twinkly lights. It’s been a shit year I’m all for some festive cheer!!!

MerylStropp · 15/11/2020 20:05

A lot of my relatives have been putting up their Christmas decorations mid November for the last few years so I wasn't surprised they've got theirs up now. But they are also the ones posting on Facebook on Boxing Day "All decorations down, house nice and clean for the new year!"

This. I find Facebook posts like this on Boxing Day really depressing. Makes it sound as though the decorations are something to be endured rather than enjoyed! When did the Twelfth Night tradition die a death? Are people so influenced by what happens in the shops? Confused

cakewitch · 15/11/2020 20:08

Its lovely and it makes people happy, so who cares. Ive covered my house in twinkly lights already. We have a real tree so that will wait till early December, but good on anyone else who's done the full Christmas thing already. We all need cheering up.
