AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

I'm sure it's been pointed out that people want to cheer themselves up!

I'm resisting because I think the situation is going to get much worse and I want to have something to look forward to not spend my pleasure card now 😂 but I may do the outside sooner to give some festive cheer...

I'm feeling very Christmassy however...

keeprocking · 15/11/2020 22:17

My cross-the-road neighbour is starting with his tat-fest, I'm praying for high winds and torrential rain on his head. People have asked why I don't cut back bushes in my garden, they're there to block his ugly lights.

S00LA · 15/11/2020 22:20

@LauraBassi

I know loads who have.

Dd asked me if we could have pink and white decorations this year so to make it fun I agreed.

Went shopping today and the shelves are bare of pink decorations Shock

Looks like it’s going to a pink Christmas in every ones house this year Grin

Our local B and M store had lots of pink and silver decorations last time I was in.
Tumbleweed101 · 15/11/2020 22:23

Oddly enough, this year I don't want to put them up early and I'm thinking of putting them up a little later.

That said... I'm missing trawling around the shops with christmas music already playing! I haven't been into town since lockdown started although I have to pick up some new glasses next week so might pop into whatever shops are open then to pick up some things for stockings etc. Maybe I will change my mind then...

gwenneh · 15/11/2020 22:24

Because it makes me happy.

There are only 40 days until Christmas, at which point it all becomes anticlimactic, and I want to spend the next month + enjoying fairy lights and glitter.

I had just given birth last year so we didn’t do much, and I have a little more time this year, so I’m using it.

Inkpaperstars · 15/11/2020 22:29

A lot of posts are being very defensive, OP didn't criticise the choice to put decs up early.

SingToTheSky · 15/11/2020 22:34

I wouldn’t put ours up, for me they are more special if they are only up for a short time, otherwise they just feel like part of the furniture. I can’t deny I love seeing lights up outside though on these dark nights!

I’ve been enjoying choosing presents and planning fun things to do nearer the day (games, baking etc)

Sideorderofchips · 15/11/2020 22:35

I put up mine yesterday. Me and the kids have had a shit year and it makes us happy

SingToTheSky · 15/11/2020 22:35

My DCs usually ask to put decorations up on their rooms earlier than the rest of the house, I need to get them a small tree each

Dongdingdong · 15/11/2020 22:36

Why do you think they’re doing that OP? Take a guess.

YABU.

Brighterthansunflowers · 15/11/2020 22:44

There’s always some people who do

I’m strictly 1st of December myself but I can understand that after such a shit year people want something to cheer them up, so if that’s Christmas decorations then crack on.

dietingtomorrow · 15/11/2020 23:02

Because it gives me an excuse for starting on the three very large tins of Quality Street I've bought. Can pretend it's Christmas for at least 2 months!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/11/2020 23:03

I'm up for putting up the white lights in the near future with coloured lights to follow in early December. Probably the tree in mid-December around usual.

There's a few white lights up already and it's cheering on a dull evening.

Runnerduck34 · 15/11/2020 23:03

The village whatapp group is pushing to get everyone to put their outdoor xmas lights up next weekend, very mixed response. I think people just want to light up the dark nights and do something positive, we dont have outdoor lights but anyway its all far too early for me, I love xmas but it wont feel.special if decs go up 6 weeks before the big day, we will wait til first weekend of December as normal, this is the first time ever Ive ever been told Im putting up my xmas decs too late!

Nomnomarrgh · 15/11/2020 23:12

I remember in March, people all around the world people were trying to keep spirits up with xmas decorations. I’m not on Facebook or Instagram, but my tree is up. As pp said, pants year, anything for a bit of cheeriness. Especially now I’ve been told we have to isolate for 14 days due to a school infection.

AlrightTreacle · 15/11/2020 23:19

I've put some warm white fairy lights up in some of the little trees outside our flat, not Christmas lights as such, just to try and make the earlier dark nights a bit brighter to passers by.

We'll probably put our tree up on the first Sunday in December. I did think about doing it earlier, but this year is already surreal enough, so I'd prefer to stick to doing it at the "normal" time as it's one less change if that makes sense. My motto for this year is "whatever gets you through"; one of my colleagues put her tree up on the 1st of October 🤣, but it makes her happy so why not.

Personally I'm not feeling Christmassy yet; the weather is still quite mild were I am and the trees are still all pretty and autumnal, so happy to make the most of autumn before fully embracing winter hibernation/Christmas.

BluSpider · 15/11/2020 23:22

It’s only people who have plastic trees. A proper tree would be dead by Christmas.

Holothane · 15/11/2020 23:25

My big tree goes up December 18th, but my little tree in the bedroom goes up the first, I’d love to do earlier but won’t, but this year is so crap and I’m already watching Christmas call the midwife and my grumpy old women at Christmas. It’s getting harder each day to resist.

LadySparkles · 15/11/2020 23:38

We did because H will be out of the country until 20th Dec and I didn't want to do the outside lights alone.

But I don't know why I'm explaining that, because anyone that moans about holiday lights is a proper Scrooge.

skyesilver · 16/11/2020 00:02

We've put ours up. We love Christmas, it's our favourite time of year. Since it's been such a shitty year for everyone we decided there's no harm in a few extra weeks of decorations Grin

VestaTilley · 16/11/2020 00:09

Because, frankly, they’re morons.

As religious literacy in this country declines, so too does the understanding of what Christmas is, what Advent is, and when both begin.

The same people will have it all down by Boxing Day, thereby spectacularly missing the point.

Nomnomarrgh · 16/11/2020 00:11

I’m very proud of my plastic tree. Its on its 5th xmas. When I was married, it was a new tree every year (probably also plastic).

Parker231 · 16/11/2020 00:16

@VestaTilley - religion has nothing to do with when people decide to put up and down their decorations. There are no rules, it’s totally down to personal preference and individual family traditions.
Ours go up on the weekend before Christmas in time for Christmas Day and down on NYE when Christmas is over and ready to start the next year.

SpillingTheTea · 16/11/2020 00:17

Put mine up today. Why not.

bloodywhitecat · 16/11/2020 00:44

Because lockdown brought DP pancreatic cancer. Because the baby we have been fostering for a year is moving on to adoption before Christmas. Because, well because.

I wouldn't normally but 2020 has been far from normal and 2021 is likely to be even worse.
