Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:15

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

How can someone be furious about it being passed on and then take it to the supermarket Grin

Strictly1 · 15/11/2020 11:31

@ViralVera

DS does not go anywhere other than college. He has even been biking in, in the rain, as he was worried about catching CV on the bloody bus! He has autism so doesn’t communicate well. He only said he had a sore throat when I told him his test was positive. He has been isolating himself in his bedroom and wearing a mask when he comes out but still as DH works in a massive distribution centre employing thousands of people, we’re having tests as he will need to make his staff aware if his is positive, although he will not be going to work obviously.

DS’s test was not unnecessary either Hmm. Even if he doesn’t, hopefully become unwell, there are still long term effects from Covid so I wanted to check if he had picked it up and have it on record.

He had suffered mentally from isolation in lockdown as he only has college which is why I sent him back, with reassurance that there were strict measures in place.

Tests should be available to people who have had direct contact with positive cases. It’s not my fault the government are so shit that they’re not!

DH was coming with me to Tesco so he could go to one end of the shop and I could start at the other, so in and out in 15 minutes instead of 30. Makes sense No? These are plenty of unmasked couples/families still in my local Tesco. We’ll be using the scanner, wiping it before and after use, obviously not getting close to anybody. DD was in Tesco today, and DH was at work. Does 12 hours make that much of a difference?

The reason I’m raging at the college is why at least one of the staff members was in college the DAY BEFORE (Monday) we were notified there were positive tests (Tuesday)? That person is DS’s support worker. Tests take at least 24 hours to come back don’t they? DS’s took 29 hours which I thought was amazingly quick! If they had symptoms, to need to take a test, why were they there after the weekend? DS only goes in part time so he wouldn’t have had contact with that person for 4 days before Monday. Do colleges do random tests and they came back and none of the them had symptoms before, really?

This week we have had to wait three days for one set of results and another set came back the same day. Same testing centre so completely confused but true none the less. Listen to others and do your bit for the greater good.
Ontheboardwalk · 15/11/2020 11:37

Just checked Iceland near me. Can get choice of 6 2 hour delivery slots every day all next week starting from 6am tomorrow.

Dont know how they are doing it but is a bloody good service

stackemhigh · 15/11/2020 11:37

You're allowed to go out and buy food in an emergency, and this IS an emergency if there is no way to get food delivered to you.

People here are just angry that they can'r beat you with a stick because you have already exhausted other options so they can't smugly tell you to do anything.

And yes, we have had CV-19 but was in the fortunate situation of family providing food.

flaviaritt · 15/11/2020 11:38

wildraisins

It was hysterical. Yes, I know how viruses spread. That isn’t what was being said.

It's not an emergency. Other options have been suggested and she's not listened. That doesn't make it an emergency - simply because it doesn't suit. Can you imagine causing someone else to catch it simply because you needed to have Tesco yoghurts. The mind boggles!

It isn't an emergency. They have food in the house, just not squash and yoghurt etc. Op has been given a list of ideas - Amazon, coop, Morrisons, local grocers, local corner shops, Facebook requests etc. , takeout She can get a delivery Wednesday so we're talking about needing a few extra bits not a months shop

  1. no, you can’t go out and about for food shopping when self isolating ffs

  2. op has Amazon prime and has already acknowledged that’s an option for a food delivery (but still wants to go to Tesco

stackemhigh · 15/11/2020 11:46
  1. OP hasn't sad said she still wants to go to Tesco. Let' hope Amazon works for her.

  2. CV regulation says you can go out for emergencies, food being one of them (if you can't get it delivered).

Fyngal123 · 15/11/2020 11:47

@ViralVera I’ve sent you a PM.

MalteserGeezee · 15/11/2020 11:49

You're being purposely obstinate here and ignoring some really excellent and sensible advice from people.

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 15/11/2020 11:52

OP, you aren't thinking straight. You are now in isolation. I'm wondering whether you know it is a £1000 fine if someone knows that a Covid person is in your household and you go outside?

There are plenty of volunteers - your local shop and pharmacy keep their list of volunteers and your local council has one too.

Bambam2019 · 15/11/2020 11:55

You are being unreasonable for blaming the staff, sorry but how do you know it was definitely them? You’re obviously annoyed you have no food in and are looking for someone to blame in this situation. You can’t be furious at the staff for potentially passing it on and also contemplate going to the supermarket and passing it on to others there yourself!
Personally I would exhaust all other options first which have been mentioned above!

Persephonegoddess · 15/11/2020 11:57

Use amazon pantry..... with prime it is next day delivery

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/11/2020 11:57

@Sirzy

Even if it is a troll it still means that there are approximately 80 people on this thread who have voted that it’s fine to go into a supermarket knowing you are quite possibly carrying a deadly virus
I wonder whether those 80 people make up a large part of the group that think the CV are being ridiculous not going shopping or to public places because they aren’t CEV.
Lollyneenah · 15/11/2020 12:02

Where in the country are you OP? I can refer you for a food parcel delivery if you're in north Wales?

jessycake · 15/11/2020 12:06

Have you tried iceland , they were the only online delivery I could get in the first wave

MissEliza · 15/11/2020 12:14

@CookieMumsters

You dont know that the college staff passed it to your family. It could be from anywhere.

You did however know that your son had been tested, you could have prepared for this possibility. You need to take some responsibility for this.

^ This.
MissEliza · 15/11/2020 12:15

As for blaming the staff ... for ffs.

burritofan · 15/11/2020 12:15

this IS an emergency ... you have already exhausted other options
FFS she’s got eggs for breakfast, chips for lunch, variations on meat, rice and pasta for dinner and water in the tap, it’s not an emergency, she’s not come back to rule out any of the many options let alone exhaust them, and no one in her house is going to starve for lack of a virus-spreading supermarket scoot.

SatishTheCat · 15/11/2020 12:17

Haven’t read the whole thread but easiest option if you have some financial means is to order fruit and veg and eggs online. Order today and you will have it by Tues. Make sure you have plenty of potatoes and sweet potatoes, then it’s no big deal if you run out of store cupboard carbs before you can do a regular shop. thevegboxcompany.co.uk/product/the-large-veg-box/

Order meat and dairy online for delivery Mon/Tues: pipersfarm.com/collections/all-meat-boxes?gclid=Cj0KCQiAwMP9BRCzARIsAPWTJ_EDKg2RUraeneouDaJ222edLxF4B8qnYzy3Z9r2sQsZmrPF9plD3qQaAl7NEALw_wcB

Until it all arrives, have takeaway and use your creativity to make meals from what you have in already. Dig those unused tins out from the back of the cupboard. If you are all adults at home isolating, at least one of you have the time to do this.

In my area, the council has a hotline which you can phone and a volunteer will shop for you and deliver it to your door if you really must have a supermarket shop.

intothedark · 15/11/2020 12:21

Why would you risk infecting people like me who are at higher risk we cant not work, working from home is not possible for shop workers. You are raging that your son has been infected but are willing to pass it on to vunerable people who work in supermarkets how horribly selfish can one person be

Mylittlesandwich · 15/11/2020 12:24

NHS tests are only for people with symptoms. So yes the tests you have taken and booked are unnecessary. If you want to take unnecessary tests then pay for them. It doesn't matter what your or DHs job is the NHS is quite clear on who qualifies.

As far as getting shopping there are so many other options, think about the potential impact of your actions. If you are positive and you go round the shops you could easily pass it on. You pass it on to someone else who is vulnerable and you could do a lot of damage to another family. Don't be selfish, as mentioned there are plenty of options out there if somehow there is nobody who can help you.

mumwon · 15/11/2020 12:25

because of difficulties at the beginning of this outbreak I have made sure we have
frozen mixed veg
soup
oatmeal biscuits (they can be used as a savoury or sweet like bread) or similar
tinned & LL& powdered milk
tinned toms, puree tubes, etc
extra cereals & either/or bread in freezer or half cooked rolls or pack of bread
rice & pasta
tinned fruit beans peas
& loo rolls Grin

While for some on breadline keeping store cupboard up is really difficult financially - this is not the case with op

TeapotCollection · 15/11/2020 12:27

Can you tell us which Tesco it is so that we can all avoid it
