Okay I need to rant its friday and I have done 3 x 10 hour days back to back, I need wine and to release my anger

FYI this isnt for when its friends or family.

It's about people calling you: banks, clients or colleagues, insurance wanting to check something, whatever.

Its 2020. I'm sorry if you dont like it, but when you call me, you are intruding. We have WhatsApp, we have email. I get instant notifications on my phone. When you call me, you drag me out of whatever I'm doing (working usually) to demand my attention.

If it's about my bank account then guess what? Use your fucking fancy messaging system on the platform I'm assuming that's what it's there for and that way you will have a record.

If it's about work, guess what? I'm fucking working right now. On something that doesnt have to do with you. So send me an email and wait your turn. It's not all about you. And again: I would prefer to have what you say in writing.

Ooh and by the way you know voice messages? Yeah I dont listen to those. So you chat away but just FYI I listen to my voice messages except I dont, I just dial in and then hit 3 or whatever it is repeatedly until they are all deleted.

So dont waste my fucking time and stop jostling into my personal space. Seeing the missed call icon on my phone puts me on edge. If you are bored during lock down and need a human voice then I suggest you call a relative or friend. I AM BUSY. Oh and also: please dont email saying "would it be possible to arrange a call to discuss?". It wouldnt actually, see above.

Am I abnormal to hate this this much??

You are what most men imagine MNetters to be. Angry, unreasonable and entitled.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and so what? OP is meant to change to make herself desirable to these unknown men?? You pick-mes are doing the most. Impose limitations on your own life, feelings and opinions for some random men but don't expect everyone else to?

"Oh, no! I can't possibly say thaaàaatt! What would the men think?". Are you fucking serious

Banj0girl · 15/11/2020 11:47

We can't turn the landline off as my husband has a beeper attached to it.
We do block calls but sometimes they still ring but marked blocked when we check. We can't block or leave withheld numbers, that might be the surgery. Some of these spammy calls seem to have an unlimited amount of numbers to call from. One of these days they are going to be calling 24/7 !
I would just like to turn the ringer off so he/we don't get disturbed as my husband is quite ill. Then anyone who really wants to talk to us can leave a message.
Also we still have people who complain they can't get in touch with us and I say, did you leave a message then ?

Justbrutallyhonest · 15/11/2020 11:48

Ooooooo I can’t deal with a phone call unless it’s scheduled, get over yourselves

leiaskye · 15/11/2020 12:51

@PaperTowels

I'd far rather have a quick phone call than yet another email pinging into my life.
That’s just what I was thinking. You can waste a lot of time playing email tennis, when a quick call can just resolve the issue.
SmudgeButt · 15/11/2020 15:04

I get this completely. I was on a call from a very upset friend and got a notice that there was another call coming through - from my doctor's surgery. They hung on long enough for my phone to ring just twice, so not enough time for me to answer and then left the generic message "please ring us".

It took me nearly half an hour to get through to them about a prescription I had dropped off 2 days earlier. Apparently the doctor didn't want to fill it as it's something I've never had before (wrong) and because I was a new patient (wrong) and they didn't know what it was for (um - look it up?). And the so very well trained person on the phone (admin, not medical) said that given the info I'd provided the prescription would be ready for me to pick up the next morning. Assuming the doctor agreed, which I wouldn't know until at least next Wednesday as that's how long these things take. A complete TWONK!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/11/2020 15:11

You are being ridiculous and probably should get your blood pressure checked.

notanothertakeaway · 15/11/2020 15:15

@lazylinguist

I work in an industry that is very tight deadline oriented. So I just dont understand why you wouldnt send what would literally be a two line email

YABU to expect everyone to communicate in the way it suits you to communicate because of your job.

I prefer to be emailed too, but not everyone does.

Agree with this

You prefer email. Suppose your colleague prefers tel calls. Why should your preference take priority?

WingingItSince1973 · 15/11/2020 15:21

Wow what do you do for a living that you are in such demand?

Gwenhwyfar · 15/11/2020 16:12

"It’s a myth that 2020 time is more pressured or more important that the 1980s or 1990s in fact overall technology has made it easier,"

Depends on your personal situation doesn't it. Because there's no travel time between virtual meetings some people are now in meetings all day and also having to do their work at the same time. Some people who were able to disconnect when they worked in a physical office aren't able to when they work from home.

I'm lucky that I don't have a work mobile so nobody external can call me while I'm working from home and I find that the phone is used less and less in favour of email anyway, which is why I agree with OP about all these organisations who are calling her when they could be emailing instead.

I prefer to leave phone calls to friends and family and urgent matters. Routine matters where you are a customer can be done by email.

Bigbadboss · 16/11/2020 11:31

I just sit and watch my phone ring unless it's a call I expecting it emergency (go, hospital or school) I dont have voicemail activated so no one can leave me a message. All my family and friends text.

TonMoulin · 16/11/2020 12:00

On a Daily basis, I’m receiving around 50 emails a day. I don’t think that’s that much for a work email, my DH is more around 100 a day

I’m wondering what @CrotchBurn is doing work wise that is so deadline orientated that she is happy to have emails pinging at her that often. It would drive me mad!! (Hence my notifications are turned off).
If I had to chose between 100 pings form emails and a couple of phone calls a day, I know what I would chose.
In either case, you can ignore anyway 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Sweetpea1532 · 19/11/2020 02:06

LOL @Spaceshiphaslanded and
@CandyLeBonBon...
Thanks for the tea-spitting laugh!!!
I have found my people!
BTW, Candy, I sent you a very important email around 2785 emails ago...you'd better go find it🤣🤣🤣

seayork2020 · 19/11/2020 02:22

I get tonnes of dodgy spam email from so called banks which are spam, so although I get a bit annoyed by cold callers or other, to me, unimportant calls emails the people calling me they have a job to do same as when I call people myself (through work or otherwise)

I do prefer handling things by email but the world does not revolve around my preferences!

As a bit of a side issue sales people may get more business from us if they tone down the happiness a bit! it is fake and we can tell

I know all the numbers of important people to me the rest goes to voicemail, and if I don't check my voice mail it is my problem no theirs

Mypathtriedtokillme · 19/11/2020 02:39

I figure my phone is for my own convenience so I will answer it, if and when I want to.
I don’t need or want to be contactable constantly.

CaribouCarafe · 19/11/2020 05:27

Agree with you about voicemails, but what really grinds my gears are those bloody voice messages people leave on WhatsApp - normally starts with a silence as the person hasn't bothered to think through what they're going to say first, followed by inane wittering for a couple of minutes (normally repetitious and could have been condensed into a single sentence).

Even worse when it's a client, as then you end up with a stream of shitty voice messages which you can't "search" for down the line. Like fuck am I going to listen to the last 20 voice messages you sent for the one that actually has the relevant details in it.

I've set all my contact settings for services that I use to "do not contact by phone" so only get phone calls from the bank when they think there's suspicious activity on my card (usually it's an annual case of just me buying something unusually expensive!).

Agree that people calling right after sending an email/in lieu of an email when it's a non-urgent matter is just a gross waste of time.

Very much enjoyed your rant OP, bravo.
@Warpdrive
🤔 Personally I reply to emails instantly...
As someone who used to teach time management programmes in workplaces I can tell you this is the one habit you need to break. This is a massive time waster. It might seem efficient at the time, but its not as it takes time and attention away from the work that you are doing when the email appears.

Turn off email alerts so they dont pop up at the bottom of the screen every time one comes through. Check them at regular intervals throughout the day, though not too often. When working out your day, you build in time to respond to emails, rather than having emails drive your day. By all means check more often if you need a specific email for whatever work you are doing, but only checking for that specific email.

It takes a bit of adapting, but it is the single most effective habit change to make your working day more efficient, and a lot less stressful.

This reminds me of when patients turn up to their cancelled appointments because and I quote- I don't answer my phone and I don't listen to voice messages. Well there we go then. Winds me up so much.
