To think that we shouldn’t be coming out of lockdown for Christmas?

Yesterday we had the highest total of cases yet since the beginning of the pandemic. And the death rate is going up day on day. They’re attributing it not to mass testing but to the fact that when lockdown was announced people rushed to see each other and hence the virus spread more.

If we open up on the 2nd of December people will just rush out to the pubs and the shops and each other’s houses and we’ll be back here in the new year.

It would be far better to stay in lockdown until the new year and then hopefully start the year on a reducing case rate.

And yes, I know it’s Christmas, but tonight is Diwali, and nobody is suggesting we should come out of lockdown so people can celebrate that, so why should we just because it’s Christmas?

I hear you. I think pubs and restaurants should remain closed.

There are a lot of conspiracies out there and i don't believe at all that the numbers are rising.

They should've done a complete lock down for 2 weeks including schools.

Everyone including myself want a normal xmas with all of their family and i think it will happen but numbers will be limited.

Madvixen · 13/11/2020 15:17

I'm mentally preparing for lockdown to be extended till the 20th of Dec then lifted for a week (when we go back to rule of 6) before we're out back into lockdown for a month. I just do not see how they can allow NYE to happen in any shape or form as that's just storing up more cases for January.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2020 15:18

Canadian thanksgiving caused a spike. American thanksgiving will too. Diwali and Eid were locked down. It all seems so random and nonsensical at this point!

ShandlersWig · 13/11/2020 15:18

I think you're being assumptive that we'll be out by the 2nd.

Wasn't the first lockdown for 3 weeks?

ShandlersWig · 13/11/2020 15:19

Presumptive!

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/11/2020 15:19

Who’s lying and why?

If you don’t believe the numbers why advocate for a lockdown at all, nevermind including schools?

No. I'm sure we were told it would be reviewed after three weeks, I don't think anyone ever said it would end after 3 weeks. Apologies if I am wrong.
hellsbells99 · 13/11/2020 15:23

I think there will be some people ignoring the rules and they will be celebrating Diwali with their families. In the same way that some people will ignore the rules over Christmas and will be celebrating with their families.

Whatsonmymindgrapes · 13/11/2020 15:24

Yeah... no.

I hope to God you're wrong, my mental health won't cope if its extended. It needs to end on the 2nd.
PinkPlantCase · 13/11/2020 15:26

The lockdown isn’t going to end on December 2nd is it, they’re clearly going to extend it until right before Christmas. I predict a few days break from lockdown and then back in lockdown/tiers for new year.

Frankly if they don’t relax the rules for a few days around Christmas I think people will break them anyway. The police aren’t going to go round arresting people travelling to their family on Christmas Day. There might be a limit on numbers at household gatherings indoors.

Also in England Christianity is the constitutionally established state religion. We have bank holidays at Christmas and Easter. Christmas in the U.K. is not treated the same as Diwali, in the exact same way that other countries will have more of an emphasis on Diwali than Christmas.

Silverstripe · 13/11/2020 15:28

why should we just because it’s Christmas?

I feel genuinely very sorry for people not having the Diwali celebrations they usually would but it is worth bearing in mind that Hindus account for less than 1.5% of the population in the U.K., whereas practicing Christians account for 59% - and of course, Christmas is celebrated by many non-practicing Christians, atheists, and members of other faiths as well. I doubt there would be the same expectation of Christmas going ahead as usual if it was a festival that only 1.5% of people participated in, even though it is important to recognise and empathise with people who’s religious and cultural celebrations have been tanked this year.

Againstmachine · 13/11/2020 15:29

Whitty and vallance did with their graphs for some reason.

No, it will end on the 2nd. Stop scaremongering.
Ginfilledcats · 13/11/2020 15:31

Of course the cases are going up, the mass testing of 1000s of people started in Liverpool this week! Test more = find more.

God knows what this gov will so though!

2020iscancelled · 13/11/2020 15:35

If we do not allow some kind of spending in the Xmas period to happen (other than my serious Amazon Prime habit) the already fucked retail and hospitality industries are most certainly going to implode...

There might be daily covid deaths but there aren’t excess deaths overall are there?
Meaning covid is taking over where flu would have seen people off?
I’m sorry to be blunt. It’s terrible. But so will be the after effects of the economy collapsing.

milkncoffee · 13/11/2020 15:35

What I’d like to know out of the daily cases is how many are asymptomatic that would be reassuring if it’s a high number

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 13/11/2020 15:39

Given they're already told university students they can go home the week after this 'lockdown' ends AND legally it HAS to end unless it's agreed in Parliament, I think the National 'lockdown' will end. Wouldn't surprise me though if we open up with added tiers & done are in T4/5 Etc.

'Lockdown' because it's really not is it? Still loads of shops open that have started selling tiny amounts of food to be 'essential' & nursey/schools/unis open, plus lots of businesses still insisting staff come into the office when they don't 'need' to etc

I'm hoping it makes a difference, but it's not going to be anywhere near enough!!

January is going to see high case numbers & subsequently high deaths.

PEOPLE need to think beyond the 'Ruiz' and understand the consequences of their behaviour.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 13/11/2020 15:41

@milkncoffee

The daily number admitted to hospital is a better number to take note of.

The scientists have been saying it's not due to increasing tests, the positivity rate has gone up.

& obviously the increasing number of deaths 😢

PinkPlantCase · 13/11/2020 15:41

@kittensarecute it’s not scare mongering though, it’s thinking critically about what the government are saying.

The date of the 2nd December was so obvious chosen to give them a buffer to extend the lockdown if cases hadn’t fallen enough.

If it does end then we’ll go back to a tiered system that would put anyone who lives near a city basically in lockdown anyway.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 13/11/2020 15:44

@kittensarecute

Stop accusing people of scaremongering every time they say something you don't like.

I'm really sorry you're struggling & have been for months, but as has been suggested to you many times, there are other threads on MN reading ones about Covid probably isn't in YOUR best interest. There are plenty of others (even now).

Calmandmeasured1 · 13/11/2020 15:46

It will end on 2nd December and we will be put into tiers again BUT which tier we are in depends on how people are behaving now. I believe some areas will be in more restrictive measures than previously if people behave irresponsibly.

MercyBooth · 13/11/2020 15:49

'Lockdown' because it's really not is it

Tell our hairdressers that.

Bluntness100 · 13/11/2020 15:52

It doesn’t really matter what anyone thinks, Boris is going to do what Boris is going to do

And I’d bet good money we are out on the second dec and into tiers. Ans I’d bet rather a lot of it.

userxx · 13/11/2020 15:55

Tell our hairdressers that.

And pub landlords.
