Nice to see a MNer doing well.

Don't get me wrong, IT Crowd is brilliant, but every syllable and shot of Father Ted is deranged perfection.

I can watch those Priests trapped in a lingerie department a thousand times and not be bored.

@goatyogawithphil I haven't seen Parks & Recreation but it's now on my watch list.

Not a big Ab Fab fan but also absolutely love Patsy. Pure genius!

SunscreenCentral · 14/11/2020 14:07

Toilet humour in Fr Ted? Nope.
It is absolutely classic, and as a pp wrote, a perfect universe....
my favorite episode is the one when they go on the shit holiday in the tiny caravan and Graham Norton and the youth club show up

june2007 · 14/11/2020 14:08

Evidence of toilet humour...Dirty underpant trunk, getting lost in underwhere dept. (ok that was a bit funny but not that funny.)

Can,t we just say each to their own.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 14/11/2020 14:09

The lingerie section thing wasn't toilet humour Confused it's a parody of war films, it was hysterical!

And the caravan tips from all the Irish dancing 😂😂

YANBU. I know it's all subjective but I found Fr Ted delightfully silly and incredibly funny and the IT Crowd really forced and up itself. I didn't like the characters at all.

Poetnojo · 14/11/2020 14:14

Father Ted hands down.
We quote it all the time in this house.
When trying to remind Dh or one of the kids about something and they don't know what I'm talking about "you were wearing your blue jumper."
Anytime anyone breaks anything in the house "cowboys Ted"
This cow is small, that cow is far away
The money was just resting in my account
Once again Dougall, you've made me look like a right fool.
Etc etc etc.

You said "too much" toilet humour, yet gave only 2 examples, one of which wasn't even toilet humour.

Each to their own, of course: you don't have to like it; but it's completely incorrect to say that toilet humour features to any extent in Father Ted.

muddyboots · 14/11/2020 16:03

Father Ted is the absolutely best comedy ever and as previous posters have suggested the phrases and imagery are part of lots of people's everyday lives. IT crowd is just funny.

jewel1968 · 14/11/2020 16:09

"that would be an ecumenical matter"

It's fine that everyone likes different things... Just very weird to say Father Ted uses too much toilet humour.
DrManhattan · 14/11/2020 20:00

They are basically the same show? Same set up and themes

Saucery · 14/11/2020 20:08

It’s a set up that runs through Hancock’s Half Hour, Steptoe And Son, Only Fools And Horses..... basically, there’s a man surrounded by a core of fools and unfortunate events holding him back. Only he’s not aware he is also a Fool.
Basis of comedy since like, forever.

carbnarA · 14/11/2020 20:12

IT Crowd is my absolute favourite. The countdown episode is amazing. Perfection

Butteredtoast55 · 14/11/2020 22:57

They are both brilliant. Father Ted edges it for me, but I watched an episode of the IT Crowd the other night that made me absolutely snort with laughter. I had forgotten how funny and clever it is.

Tootsietoot · 14/11/2020 23:06

I made my teens watch father Ted and they couldn't get past the laughing at the paedophila in the first episode or so. We have had major family issue with this in Ireland (not my DC) that makes this even harder. It was painful to watch and l was gutted as I had forgotten that side to it.

MadameBlobby · 14/11/2020 23:43

Where did father Ted laugh at paedophilia?

MadameBlobby · 14/11/2020 23:44

Oh do you mean Fr Jack with the schoolgirls/wet t shirt contest? If so I agree it’s pretty uncomfortable to watch these days. I still love Fr Ted though.

purpleme12 · 14/11/2020 23:44

My favourite might be where Jen 'dies' in The IT Crowd

Pebbledashery · 14/11/2020 23:57

@purpleme12 Elton John 😂😂😂😂😂

RedHotChiliChips · 15/11/2020 13:28

I wonder why Mr Bean is always derided on here. It’s very popular in my home country and one of the best loved comedy characters there. No snootiness towards it at all.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 15/11/2020 17:32

Mr Bean is excellent - I love the scene where his girlfriend thinks he's gonna propose as he produces a little box but it's actually a picture hook Grin

donquixotedelamancha · 15/11/2020 20:14

I wonder why Mr Bean is always derided on here.

There is Bean and Bean. The early stand alone episodes were magnificent- entirely silent and beautifully constructed. The scene where he has lunch on a park bench is a masterpiece.

By the time you get to the films it's devolved into broad slapstick, although the last one (Mr Bean's Holiday) recaptures some of that original magic.
