...to think Father Ted is funnier than IT Crowd

Nice to see a MNer doing well.

Don't get me wrong, IT Crowd is brilliant, but every syllable and shot of Father Ted is deranged perfection.

I can watch those Priests trapped in a lingerie department a thousand times and not be bored.

What an odd list. Did they restrict it to sitcoms made since 2000?

Top Ten
The IT Crowd: 1min 44sec of laugher per hour
Peep Show: 1min 36s
The Inbetweeners: 1min 22s
The Office: 59s
Mr Bean: 54s
The Thick Of It: 51s
Outnumbered: 31s
Friday Night Dinner: 23s
My Family: 9s
This Country: 7s

I agree it's an odd list, @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g and they can hardly call anything the funniest comedy when there is a pre-selected shortlist (based on what?) in the first place. There are many as good or better that weren't included (like Father Ted), and some on the list that are absolutely dire.

Also, as you said, most of these are pretty recent, so older comedies are left out (but Mr Bean is from 1990, btw Wink)

Livpool · 13/11/2020 18:16

Father Ted is perfection

MadameXanadu · 13/11/2020 18:26

Biscuit or cake.... biscuit or cake ..... Biscuit! No! Cake! .... it’s Father Ted for me. So I agree OP.

randomchap · 13/11/2020 18:26

When we were decorating years ago, my wife painted a crude Bishop Brennan on one of the skirting boards. When asked by visitors, she would only explain it as being an ecumenical matter.

It's still there, just hidden behind some furniture.

MissAHannigan · 13/11/2020 18:32

For me though, it is Partridge all the way.

@glinner was in one of the best Partridge episodes/scenes as well Wink

KOKOagainandagain · 13/11/2020 18:53

DS2 was doing depth perception in his GCSE psychology. I showed him the Father Ted cows clip. Good parenting day for me. Smile

amusedbush · 13/11/2020 18:56

Father Ted every time.

‘Don’t call me Len, you little prick, I’m a bishop!’
‘Oh right. Well done.’

Father Ted is funnier than almost everything. Just genius 🤣👨‍💼

emilyfrost · 13/11/2020 18:58

@JovialNickname

You definitely should have enabled voting OP, you might have had the first ever MN 100% YANBU!!
She wouldn’t have. Father Ted is awfully unfunny; The IT Crowd is a stroke of genius.
HPLikecraft · 13/11/2020 19:29

I so need to watch FT again.

"I hear you're a racist now, father?" 🤣

iklboogeymum · 13/11/2020 19:34

We quote both so much in our lives.

Come out of shop with exactly what we went in for 'No luck then, Ted?!

'A fire? At

Fatherrrrrrrrrr

I say the situation at work when I've been off on holiday will be 'Dougal at the funeral'

Down with that sort of thing.

That money was just resting in my account!

Who gave Jen the Internet (or more like 'who gave Boris the PM job')

MissAHannigan · 13/11/2020 19:41

Just play the feckin note

Pretty much whenever someone is dithering

willitbetonight · 13/11/2020 19:45

When I was at uni (before streaming etc) we used to leave the pub early to get home to watch father ted ! It's the funniest ever. My mam was Irish. She reminded me of Mrs Doyle just a little bit 🤣🤣

keeprocking · 13/11/2020 19:58

Any list that puts My Family in the top ten can't be all that reliable!

RuudGullitOnAShed · 13/11/2020 19:58

Father Ted is sublime - I can't even choose a favourite episode as they are all so perfect

Slippy78 · 13/11/2020 20:01

They both come in second place to Black Books.

kursaalflyer · 13/11/2020 20:03

Father Ted is completely outrageous. Love it to bits. But the IT crowd is fascinating because I'm convinced it's based on an old company I used to work for in the 80s. I was an applications programmer (half normal), there were geeky software programmers and then there was a basement where three oddballs worked who were obstensibly programmers but no one was brave enough to ask them what they did. We all wore suits but they wore t-shirts and bow ties. Some of the dialogue and characterisations in the programme appears to have been lifted straight from real life! Hilarious

OldGreyBoots · 13/11/2020 20:07

Noel Fielding was the only tolerable bit of the IT Crowd for me. Father Ted would maybe be in my top 10 but I'm not wild about it either!

FreezerBird · 13/11/2020 20:10

When the house is in a particularly bad state DH and I often look at each other and say "let's clean this mother!" which is just one of the regular Father Ted lines which makes it into our everyday conversation. When DS became old enough to watch it he just sat there saying 'so much more of your conversation makes sense now'.

Having said that, Black Books has a very special place in my heart for various reasons. It doesn't seem to lend itself to one-liners in the same way but I am fond of Tamsin Greig's delivery of the line "I do sell a lot of wank".

bellinisurge · 13/11/2020 20:13

Quote almost daily from Father Ted. Never really watched the IT Crowd but GL is such a genius that I imagine it's excellent too. I'm more a Black Books person after Ted.

Nancydowns · 13/11/2020 20:13

Father Ted is very dated now and Tbh it's a bit childish and catchphrasey.

The It crowd for me, still holds up today and its not based around silly catchphrases and repetitive jokes.

Father Ted is funny, but in a of its time sort of way.

I don't think much of that survey anyway as Mr Bean was number 5.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/11/2020 20:29

Dated? What's dated about Father Ted?

PatMustardsBigTool · 13/11/2020 20:32

I always wanted to see more of Father Ben...

I enjoy the IT crowd but adore FT (hence username!)

TheStripes · 13/11/2020 20:33

No, it’s definitely IT Crowd for me.
