I'm delighted about Joe Biden's and Kamala Harris' election win! Great news! The world seems to be happy about this result too! Yay!!! Smile

However, reading reports about the future of UK and US relations following this change in power at the White House, AIBU to be a bit worried for Britain? Confused

The UK is in the middle of Brexit trade negotiations that will impact the economy. Can/will the Biden win impact trade negotiation deals one way or another?

Boris Johnson congratulates Joe Biden on US election win 'Special relationship' may face downgrade...

"They won't be seen as natural allies: Joe Biden, the seasoned Democrat, and Boris Johnson, the bombastic Brexiteer.
In looking at how their future relationship might work, it's worth considering the past. Specifically that seminal year, 2016, when Donald Trump won the White House and the UK voted to leave the EU. Both Mr Biden and his boss at the time, Barack Obama, made no secret they preferred another outcome on Brexit." - Jessica Parker, Political Correspondent

A special relationship or back of the queue: What could a Biden or Trump victory mean for the UK economy after Brexit?

Brexit and the US election: What the Trump v Biden result could mean for the UK

And many more...

What's everyone else's thoughts?

Anyone who thinks 'Boris will be fucked' and 'haha, he'll struggle' should open their eyes. It's Boris who'll be fucked.

eh?

id love brexiteers to explain why they think the us is going to give the uk a vastly improved trade deal.

Pikachubaby · 08/11/2020 12:55

I think BJ is smart enough (I pray) to realise he now needs a deal with the EU

As Biden is a serious IRA sympathiser who wants a United Ireland, and is very anti- British

bellinisurge · 08/11/2020 13:19

@Pikachubaby , you don't have to be an IRA sympathiser to want a United Ireland. And he is pro Good Friday Agreement. Which the IRA had to be cowed into accepting.
But hey, carry on reading the Daily Mail.

FoolsAssassin · 08/11/2020 13:43

Let’s see how this post ages but I am pretty confident there will be a deal with the EU. There will probably be some dramatics shortly but they will just be it attempt to sell it to the Brexit MPs and public, it will be all about how they spin the narrative.

Luckily the EU understand how it works and will go along with it being presented as Johnson has won one over on them to a certain degree as long as he doesn’t overplay his hand. I do think Johnson might have had a shot at No Deal but won’t dare risk the GFA with Biden in the White House so will revert to plan B ie. a deal with the EU.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 08/11/2020 13:45

I think there will be a deal too🤞🏻Johnson’s in a corner

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/11/2020 13:47

@Pyewhacket - The EU don’t want a trade deal , they want to impose sanctions as a warning to any other nation thinking of leaving.

That is utter nonsense. The EU is refusing to give the UK the benefits of membership without the responsibilities of membership. The EU is also insisting the UK uphold an international agreement with a member state.

The current mess is a result of Teresa May's red lines that meant any sort of decent deal was not possible.

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/11/2020 13:52

@TheNewLook - I think it’s concerning that Biden was such a friend to the IRA in the past.

Really? That's utter nonsense. Supporting a united Ireland is not the same as supporting the IRA.

TheKeatingFive · 08/11/2020 13:55

Where is the evidence that Biden was a friend to the IRA? 🤔

FoolsAssassin · 08/11/2020 13:55

I’d leave Pyewhacket to their delusions Ochon. Then when there is a deal they will feel we got one over on the EU who wanted to make example of us to deter anyone else leaving but had to give us a deal as we are the mighty U.K. and our glorious leader got one over on us.

DGRossetti · 08/11/2020 13:59

Let’s see how this post ages but I am pretty confident there will be a deal with the EU.

I suspect that there has been something close to "a deal" these past few months. Not a great one. Probably not even a good one. But one that would avert no deal. With a second term Trump presidency it would have been impossible to sell to the ERG nutters who were counting on Trump to save them.

Now that's off the table, Johnson has a few days window to whip the "oven ready" deal out of the oven and ram it through parliament before the ERG have a chance to reassemble and find more ways to wreck the UK.

Brassik · 08/11/2020 14:02

Biden is not going to win.

FoolsAssassin · 08/11/2020 14:02

That’s exactly what I think DGRossetti. I have kind of put my money where my mouth is and not topped up Brexit stash so I hope so.

Sadly you can never underestimate a British governments ability to fuck up - they could fall over and miss the ground. But Boris delivering no deal only ever made sense in a universe where Trump was president till 2024.

I am amused by the lack of realisation in circles of power of the absolutely worst thing for the Tory party about Bidens win. Which is that it will make it very interesting for a UK general election that is scheduled to take place just after the 2024 presidential election. An election that may well see Kamala Harris elected POTUS. Such news could have a significant effect on how UK voters feel as they go to the polls. Either way it will be a very interesting year. A casual glance through my memory and Wiki shows they have never occurred so close together ....

bellinisurge · 08/11/2020 14:13

At least we get to see what the Grifter/Brexiteer line is- "Biden is an IRA supporter". What dicks. That's typical of their pathetic attempts at discourse.

To be fair, they spent the 4 years he was vice president making the same accusations.

Oh, hang on. They didn't. Can't think why.

Girlyracer · 08/11/2020 14:26

OP I don't know what this will mean for the UK as I haven't educated myself on it yet.

But I am surprised that you start your post by being delighted by Biden's win, before then raising what it will mean for the UK.

Isn't the effect on the UK of America's political landscape the most pressing matter for you? Are you British living in Britain?

I couldn't give a hoot who won as long as it meant the right thing for the UK. The British are my main concern, like my children, their school, their health etc.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/11/2020 14:31

i dont get it. whats wrong with that?

@Girlyracer - I couldn't give a hoot who won as long as it meant the right thing for the UK. The British are my main concern, like my children, their school, their health etc.

Given a reasonable percentage of those of living in NI are British, Biden's stance on the GFA should be beneficial to those.

What's your opinion on those who live in NI but are Irish? Do they not matter too?

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/11/2020 14:36

Luckily the EU understand how it works and will go along with it being presented as Johnson has won one over on them to a certain degree as long as he doesn’t overplay his hand.

Thankfully, one side has adults working on the negotiations.

The thing about the USA is the influence it has on the rest of the world.

So I think many people around the world are concerned over who won the US election.

chomalungma · 08/11/2020 14:39

OP I don't know what this will mean for the UK as I haven't educated myself on it yet

Do the posts on here give you some clues?

Helmetbymidnight · 08/11/2020 14:40

Trump was bad news for the world - if people can't see that, then...pfft...we can't help them!

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/11/2020 14:51

Looks like the UK government are concerned - DOMINIC RAAB HAS said he is “confident” that the Northern Ireland hurdles can be overcome to ensure the UK secures a trade deal.

The UK Foreign Secretary added he believed the government would be able to allay American fears and navigate the Northern Ireland issue to satisfy allies in the US following Joe Biden’s presidential election win.

Pikachubaby · 08/11/2020 14:56

@bellinisurge Grin I did read the daily mail, was that photo of Biden with the IRA refugee who tried to kill a soldier fake news?

Shame on me if it is Blush but how can I find out?
