lockdownqueen · 05/11/2020 16:57

I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

@Willyoujustbequiet

Its so entitled of people to think their pet trumps the enjoyment of others and I say that as a dog owner.

Im against home displays in normal circumstances but this year is different. I feel children are having a really hard time and they come first. Dogs arent stressed by Covid kids are.

A responsible pet owner should take steps to mitigate any distress their pet suffers on bonfire night. Not expect others to

I don't think my dogs trump the enjoyment of others but I do think the wellbeing of pets, horses, wildlife, old people, people suffering from ptsd do.

If people want fireworks why are the pretty ones not enough? What enjoyment can there possibly be from the ones that honestly sound like a bomb going off and, yes, I have heard a bomb going off. Have silent ones or the quieter ones ON THE CORRECT NIGHT and far more people would be unhappy

I am a responsible dog owner and I took steps to ensure my dog would not be scared by playing cd's when he was a puppy. If you have actually read the thread you will see all that went out of the window when an arsehole let off a loud firework in DAYLIGHT on the 14th November as I was walking my dog past their garden. He was terrified and I am lucky I could hold onto his lead or he would probably have run into the road and got hit by a car.

I have tried everything since but he is scared of any loud noise including idiot next door crashing their wheely bin lid about 100 time a day.

Also I wish people would stop saying it is just bonfire night because it bloody well isn't. It is weeks of them going off from early (still light) until often pretty late.

Selfish twats.

@Bookworming

Your opinion is they should be banned *@lynsey91* and it's said year after year, but they're not and people can still enjoy them.

I've just read in another thread about an out of control dog jumping up on a mother wearing her baby in a sling, very dangerous, could've hurt the baby, mum could've lost her balance and fallen.

Should dogs be banned?

We here about them killing people, babies, young children. Police are attacked by them, time taken up going to seize them, just ban them, why not?

Yes my opinion and many many many many many more peoples' opinion.

Every year the momentum to have them banned grows and as each year they seem to get even louder that it just going to carry on.

Why is your argument about dogs? What about wildlife being terrified and/or injured? Horses burned so badly by them they have to put down? Horses going into premature labour because of their fear and the foal dying? Old people being terrified? People with ptsd being terrified? People having fireworks thrown at them, people having them pushed through their letterbox, people on a bus having one thrown on the bus?

Do you not care about any of them?

PurBal · 06/11/2020 16:05

As someone with a serious fear of fireworks complete with panic attacks I usually go away to a cottage in the middle of nowhere at this time of year (not joking). Last night was really difficult for me. But I wouldn't dream of telling people they couldn't have a good time. I hope you set off loads.

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 16:25

Yes my opinion and many many many many many more peoples' opinion.

And many many saying don't ban them!

put down? Horses going into premature labour because of their fear and the foal dying? Old people being terrified? People with ptsd being terrified? People having fireworks thrown at them, people having them pushed through their letterbox, people on a bus having one thrown on the bus?

Ban cars, they get driven by drunk people, they get driven by drugged people, they get driven to fast, they terrify people by being driven badly. People kill people with cars all the time, cars kill cyclists, horses, dogs, cars, wildlife. Ban them!

MrsJunglelow · 06/11/2020 16:32

Just not comparable.

People are reliant on cars; they are needed to get to and from work, for transporting children to school etc.

There are measures in place to try and reduce accidents and work is being done to reduce their negative impact on the environment.
Without cars many people would be unable to continue their day to life as they wouldn’t be able to work for example.

How are fireworks necessary for modern day life exactly..?
And unlike cars absolutely nothing has been put in place whatsoever to reduce the damage they do and make them safer.

Turgha · 06/11/2020 16:37

I am guessing thunderstorms are just as bad?

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 16:38

@MrsJunglelow I've already said about dogs being dangerous, they're not necessary (aside from assistance dogs), ban them?

Are any pets necessary? Not needed for transport, not needed for providing anything necessary.

They are dangerous, children have been blinded by their excrement.

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 16:38

Definitely ban thunderstorms @Turgha!

Its so entitled of people to think that their right to set off dangerous incendiary devices trumps the right of farmers not to have their animals killed/scared by fireworks, by horse owners not to have their horses spooked/injured, of people not to have a house fire as a result.

Many animals are terrified by fireworks not just dogs. My rabbits are terrified by fireworks and they don't do anything to annoy my neighbours, they quietly go about their business and cause no irritation or harm to others. Fireworks can and do kill rabbits through fear.

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 16:50

But we don't have a massive campaign to ban motorbikes.

We do insist people have a license to drive them though. Which requires taking a test to prove they can do that safely.

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 16:59

@freddosfrogs if your rabbits weren't locked in a hutch then they could run away from the noise down into a Warren.

How about letting rabbits live in their natural habitat and then they wouldn't be trapped having to deal with fireworks would they?

freddosfrogs · 06/11/2020 17:07

My rabbits aren't locked in a hutch, we don't actually have a hutch (or a cage before you go down that approach).

If you want the natural approach then perhaps people shouldn't play with manufactured items such as fireworks.

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 17:19

Do that have a Warren then @freddosfrogs ? Did they not go into that? Can they get out of your garden to go further afield away from the noise? I'm sure they're restricted unnaturally in some way? If they weren't they would run free away from the noise.

It's you that's moaning about people, I'm just saying you've an issue that's 100% your own making by keeping a wild animal as a pet.

But of course the need for your children to ahh and play with it, totally outweighs its need to run wild.

But you're complaining that others enjoyments have spoilt your "pet" issues.

starsparkle08 · 06/11/2020 17:27

Hate the effect of fireworks on animals and some people with ptsd . Organised displays only . I would like to see them banned . Others may disagree but selling explosives seems crazy to me

freddosfrogs · 06/11/2020 17:28

They have a large wooden shed at their disposal, they have a cat flap into the house which they use and can choose to be in the house or in the shed. If they want they can stay in the garden. At night they choose to be in the house - if they are in the garden when it starts to get dark they come in and sleep in their pet beds.

The issue with fireworks is not 100% of my making since it would not be an issue if people didn't feel the need to set off fireworks. If you want to divvy up the responsibility then it's 50/50.

Grrrrdarling · 06/11/2020 17:29

There is a trick using old socks that can help pets with fireworks issues. Google it & pass info to you neighbour. Lots have said it has been a lifesaver for their pets Smile

Carolbetty · 06/11/2020 17:35

Just let her know when so she can look after the dog.
I love fireworks. So do my kids. We all run to the windows as soon as we hear them going off. Took my kids to firework displays from when they were born. The youngest normally fell asleep through them!!
Not a dog owner but you've given them warning; your life can't revolve around what works for your neighbours.

Yesididnamechange · 06/11/2020 17:37

Why would you give a heads up if you’re going to react like that when someone isn’t ok with it? Personal Fireworks should be illegal and not worth risking the health of an animal so you can satisfy for pyromaniac tendencies.

Thisisnotreallymyname · 06/11/2020 17:41

We had a dog that was terrified of fireworks. Our vet prescribed 10mg Valium per day for the week around Bonfire night. It worked a treat, and kept him calm.

Oscarsdaddy · 06/11/2020 17:43

I too live on a new build estate. We’ve been here for about three years and the whole estate about 5 years

We too have group chats and FB group as it’s a trait community and some messaged both on 5th November and again today (6th) to let everyone know

Dogs and cats can be scared and it’s not nice for them but it’s lovely for people to be courteous enough to give a warning

Sadly you can’t please all people all of the time. People with pets know to expect fireworks on and around November 5th and NY Eve and other religious celebrations and you’ve just gotta get on with it

custardlover · 06/11/2020 17:43

Just use sparklers. Personal fireworks are the pits and the fall out with neighbours and the dreadful example this sets for your children and absolutely not worth it.

Iamthedevilinthedetail · 06/11/2020 17:45

You think walking a dog outside when fireworks are going on its a good thing to suggest? That's a terrible idea. She can got tablets to knock get dog out for the evening but some people with fireworks are terribly inconsiderate. It was like Baghdad central here last night. My dogs don't mind them but I'm lucky. We used to have a wee terrier that nearly died of fright in firework season. Personally apart from sparklers I don't think people should have them at home. Public displays only.

Loverofoldfilms · 06/11/2020 17:52

Bonfires cause massive issues for people with covid and longcovid and people still do it. So of course you will go ahead with your fireworks too.

Bakingcupcake · 06/11/2020 17:52

As a dog owner of dogs that are terrified of fireworks YABU ...fireworks should be banned unless for large public displays...the fact you are setting them off on a housing estate too...nice one!!! Also why send out notification to then not act when someone replied saying they weren't happy...oh boo hoo your poor kids wont get fireworks ...feel really sorry for them...grow some balls and act like an adult its not nice for your neighbours or the scared dogs your kids will have to learn that sometimes its not neighbourly to do something someone has objected too...fireworks are a friggin nuisance when done at home not to mention dangerous

InFiveMins · 06/11/2020 17:55

YABU.
Nobody likes fireworks other than those setting them off. The sooner they are banned other than organised public displays on 5th Nov and New Years Eve, the better.
