Neighbour asked us not to do fireworks?

lockdownqueen · 05/11/2020 16:57

I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

And it's not just one night. Tonight, it's been noisier that it was on Bonfire night.

Winterterrace · 07/11/2020 20:45

Do tell.

Winterterrace · 07/11/2020 20:46

That was sarcasm. Google will explain that for you if you need help.

Jimineycricket · 07/11/2020 20:51

@understandalotmore

But very little need to say you hope they set themselves on fire *@Winterterrace*, that's truly sick and vile.

I think letting off fireworks (which is legal and alllowed, even though you may not like them) compared to hoping someone set themselves on fire says a lot more about you than them.

I'm glad I'm not your neighbour.

Me too. This is ridiculous, i don’t agree with them going on for weeks but doing them on 5th November and warning neighbours is fine. How many people have bbq’s and parties on summer evenings? Well they disturb my baby/kids. Can we ban them too? Find it baffling how people expect others to alter their decisions around THEIR needs. And yes I’m an animal lover and have dogs and cats but it’s my decision to have them, and live on a housing estate so I have to get on with it. If your that precious about it then move to the middle of no where rather than trying to sound proof your housing estate. Rant over.
earnshaw47 · 07/11/2020 22:27

in these depressing times i would encourage something that can make you smile, apart from the fireworks its nice for neighbours to appear, even if only social distancing

IceniWarrior · 07/11/2020 22:31

But it isn't just about their animals? Are you being deliberately obtuse? It is many animals, wildlife and live stock. Not to mention the environment. But who gives toss as long as your children have their 10 minutes of instant gratification.

IceniWarrior · 07/11/2020 22:36

And what has it to do with loud BBQs. They don't cause death and distress. You sound like one of those people who justify shit choices because Jenny and Joe down the street did it. Get some integrity.

Bluesheep8 · 08/11/2020 07:37

Why on earth were people suggesting that the neighbour 'took the dog for a walk'? Surely taking a terrified dog out on bonfire night with fireworks going off everywhere is a ridiculously stupid thing to do.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/11/2020 08:01

@IceniWarrior

And what has it to do with loud BBQs.

They both have bangers?

Shirls22 · 08/11/2020 10:28

Have changed my mind now after the barrage of fireworks we were subjected to last night, 30 minutes, very close by, of loud continuous explosions, terrified dogs and deafened owner. These were ridiculously OTT f or a quiet residential area. These sort of fireworks should not be on sale to the public! Others went on around for a few hours but weren’t so loud. Have now got two dogs that this morning are very nervous, one has diarrhoea and they haven’t let me out of their sight.

Shosha1 · 08/11/2020 10:46

We have had fireworks going off every night since Thursday. They will start, finish then somebody else will start. Last night it started at 6 and went on till gone 9.

My dog was a panicking panting terrified mess by the time it stopped.
She has been like this for 3 nights.

We live on Salisbury Plain and until three years ago the guns going off never bothered her until some idiot let off fire works right behind the house.

She now panics at the guns although not as bad. A plug in keeps her fairly calm as well as a calming collar if they are really playing war.

But nothing, nothing calms her with the fireworks. She has medication from the vet. It dosnt make much difference.

If they go off again tonight I swear I will go down there and ring their bloody necks.

LovelyIssues · 08/11/2020 10:51

I personally wouldn't knowing it will distress a dog to that degree. Should have checked before purchasing the fireworks

barbiann1957 · 08/11/2020 12:16

I think it would be difficult to manage a nervous dog round my way as fireworks have have been going off for five evenings in a row, not just Guy Fawkes Night. The noise is so bad it's like world war three.

Eaumyword · 08/11/2020 13:15

I must admit, it was awful with my old rescue boy who had a grade 4 heart murmur anyway. He used to crap in fear at the bangs and it sent him into a vestibular type seizure one year. Nothing could soothe him.
His last 2 years of life he was deaf as anything and he was blissfully unaware of the noises, thank heavens.
I don't want to spoil fun, but do think they should be 1 night only and a community organised event.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/11/2020 15:58

@Eaumyword - I agree - I think compromise ought to be possible - I would suggest limiting it to the weekends before and after the day, and Guy Fawkes night itself, and limiting the type of fireworks that can be bought by the general public to the quiet or quieter ones. None of the massive explosions which, frankly, are entirely unsuitable for a suburban back garden, as well as being very antisocial.

lynsey91 · 08/11/2020 18:28

The village I live in usually holds a display and hardly anyone has fireworks in their garden.

This year, obviously, the display was cancelled so there have been fireworks just about all week. Lots on Thursday and then again Friday going on for a good couple of hours.

Lots last night and some very loud ones. I stupidly thought that would be the end but oh no we have them again tonight.

Storyoftonight · 08/11/2020 21:44

@VitalSpark

There is only one way round the problem, ban their sale to unlicensed people. If people want to buy dogs (or other pets) then they should be properly licensed and should know how to train their animals to deal with loud noises.
Dogs die of heart attacks. No license can prevent this. HTH.
hibbledibble · 08/11/2020 23:00

Fireworks still going on tonight. I wonder when it will end.

So many people clueless about dogs, or bloody stupid, or both here. Taking the dog out for a walk is a rediculous idea, as is the idea that it's possible to train all dogs to be fine with fireworks.

chocolatemademefat · 09/11/2020 10:28

I had a ton of diarrhoea to clean up after my - sedated - dog got really upset during a neighbours firework display on Saturday night. Garden displays just aren’t very exciting - I don’t care what people do to have a good time but talk about a damp squib! They probably paid a fair bit for what they set off - I wonder if they’d like to pay for my carpet and curtains to be cleaned. Big displays I can understand and will take the hit with my dog but garden displays - not so much.

killa1972 · 10/11/2020 11:17

@lockdownqueen people who say do it don't have any idea what this does to dogs and how they suffer!! Please keep fireworks for the actual night and restrict them to sensible hours pre 9pm

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/11/2020 12:45

I wonder if the people who said 'Just do it' would say the same if it was their animal who had been injured or killed, or if it was their house that had been set on fire and destroyed by a stray firework?

IceniWarrior · 10/11/2020 12:49

It's typical I'm alright Jack. Can't think beyond their instant gratification.

lynsey91 · 10/11/2020 17:10

Another reason they should be banned

So sad the zebra was only a baby

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 10/11/2020 17:54

I wish I hadn’t clicked but it is important that people do.

Heartbreaking Sad
