Neighbour asked us not to do fireworks?

lockdownqueen · 05/11/2020 16:57

I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

I don't think the neighbour was reasonable to ask you not to. The situation with a nervous dog is certainly difficult but it isn't going to be made any easier by asking one particular person not to do fireworks as in any case there will be dozens of other neighbours also doing fireworks but without having given a warning.

I realise this will all be in the past now but I think the appropriate response was to say "Sorry I wasn't asking for permission, but just letting people know what time it would be happening."

Your neighbour is at liberty to campaign for fireworks to only be sold to professional displays, or for only bang-free fireworks to be available to the public, or whatever other legislation they want to, but until such legislation is enacted it is reasonable for people to act within the law as it currently stands.

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 09:25

And their will still be bigoted miseries next year @Smallsteps88**

Bigoted?? Grin

No one letting off fireworks in a garden during permissible times is doing anything illegal!

Unless they’re in NI. Smile

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 09:27

Have you seen the stories in the papers today about fireworks being thrown at police? Quite a few stories about fireworks being used as weapons in London, Scotland, Birmingham.

FYI @Bookworming ^^The very reason it was banned in NI! Which you say isn’t happening “on the mainland”

Indoctro · 06/11/2020 09:30

It's not just dogs, my friend has foxes living in her garden, she said they were screaming with fear last night at fireworks and a friends rabbit had a heart attack.

Until they are made silent it's very unfair to be setting them off they absolutely terrorise pets, livestock and wild animals

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/11/2020 09:30

You've told your neighbours, that's very good of you. This is a free country (!) and fireworks are not banned. It gives them time to prepare as necessary. This neighbour with the anxious dog needs to do that now. I speak as someone who went and let rip at a neighbour on Wednesday night for letting off what sounded like bombs in a rural area, which upset all the dogs and horses nearby including ours. All they had to do was let us know in advance. They let their immediate next door neighbours know but not the surrounding ones. They were gracious enough to apologise. Go and tell this neighbour that the fireworks will be going ahead between x and y times, she can go out with the dog in the car if necessary. We shut the curtains and turn up the telly.

Enjoy your fireworks. .

AliceMcK · 06/11/2020 09:33

@pinkprosseco

For all you saying it's selfish, have you looked at your own behaviour? Some people are very frightened of dogs but I imagine that doesn't stop you walking them. I am a dog owner, but I accept that's my choice and it's up to me to make sure I do everything to keep him calm (which I do and he is). OP shouldn't be criticised for celebrating fireworks same as we can all choose to own dogs.
Well said! 👏👏👏
MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 06/11/2020 09:38

Go for it. My last dog (rescue) was awful with fireworks. We gave her a safe space to hide, put the radio on and eventually got a prescription from the vets each year to calm her. The petowner is the ones who needs to take responsibility for their pet not you so long as you are doing fireworks in a safe way. I've got 2 cats and a dog now, had them since babies and none of them care at all about fireworks. When I got them I researched it fully about how to help them not be frightened. If anything my xats get more annoyed that I keep them in on bonfire night, and that's only because they are too nosey not because they're scared.

PatchworkElmer · 06/11/2020 09:49

I can see both sides of this- we did have a ‘display’ last night, but deliberately chose quiet and low-level ones (fountains, basically- and then sparklers for DS) as we wanted to be considerate to neighbours and pets. I don’t want to scare animals.

I will confess that I have less sympathy for the local dog owners who seem to think that their dogs running up to/ knocking over my small (terrified) child is fine- “they’re harmless, it’s ok!” but seem to expect lots of consideration when their pet is the one who is scared... Hmm

Motherwell homes set on fire by stray firework rocket www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-54837040

This is why we shouldn't do fireworks.

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 10:08

@Smallsteps88 but I'm not in NI, so that's irrelevant and again they won't be banned and calling people idiots because YOU don't like them is bigoted!

We have this name nonsense every year!

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 10:52

Confused The law isn’t based on where you live @Bookworming. Why do you think it is?

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 10:55

MP 1: I propose we make fireworks for home use illegal in England.

MP2: good idea, but first we must check where bookworming lives.

MP1: oh yes, of course.

Did OP ever come back?

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 11:03

@Smallsteps88 they won't be banned by on the mainland, HTH?

IdblowJonSnow · 06/11/2020 11:12

Hmm. I think I probably wouldn't.thats very tricky.
I think if you do, set them off in a very short space of time, apologise and say you don't normally do them at home (if that's the case).
Weve got a tiny box this year. They'll be done in 5 mins. Our neighbour has a dog and I feel a bit bad. But then every other buggar is letting them off...

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 11:14

Ahh! I get it now. You think you are the law maker. It all makes sense. Grin

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 11:23

@Smallsteps88 see you this time next year, the year after etc and we will see if they're banned? My money is in them not being.

SoupDragon · 06/11/2020 11:24

The law is indeed based on where you live. The laws in NI have no bearing on someone living in England.

I think eventually they will. Every year we hear about more and more awful incidents whether accidental or on purpose.

More and more people are against them. Almost everyone I know thinks they should be banned except for proper public displays.

If they were used sensibly and only on the correct night it would not be so bad but they are not. In lots of areas they are let off night after night for weeks often starting early before it is even dark and going on until after midnight.

Also every year we hear more about dickheads using fireworks to hurt people and animals

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 11:35

What does eventually mean @lynsey91, in the next millennium?

I don't think this year is worse than any other year.

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 11:42
@Smallsteps88 see you this time next year, the year after etc and we will see if they're banned? My money is in them not being.
Who said they’ll be banned this time next year?

The law is indeed based on where you live. The laws in NI have no bearing on someone living in England.

The law is not decided based on where an individual person, bookworming, lives. No one takes account of her address before deciding whether something should be made illegal. The laws that apply to you depends on where exactly you are, not where you live. If bookworming went to NI for the weekend she wouldn’t be legally able to purchase fireworks without a license regardless of the law where she lives. The law on firework sales in NI came about because fireworks were being used as weapons, which is exactly what someone upthread said had happened last night in England and Scotland- so it’s perfectly reasonable to assume and hope that the lives of police and fire officers in England’s and Scotland will be prioritised above the desire of people who wanting to see their voices “ooh” and “ahh”. regardless of where bookworming lives.

Stop being obtuse @Smallsteps88, fireworks are legal on the mainland and long may it last. I love them and will continue to enjoy them. They'll be here next year and on and on.

Would you consider silent but beautiful fireworks?

I haven’t slept because an arsehole ned let something massive off at 0130.

I get that people like fireworks but that had me scrambling for my kit and calling out a warning for colleagues before I woke up properly.

As said I don’t think randoms should be handling explosives. And those that cause injury or harm animals deliberately with them should be doing national service and experiencing the real thing. I daresay they won’t be as fun then.

No one is out to be a killjoy. But I’ve done my share of it. I don’t want to be experiencing those noises week after week.

They could be just as enjoyable to look at if they were silent. Or at least a lot quieter.

I know what it is and I wobble. More so if I’m asleep. Some people don’t have the capacity to understand or process what is going on. Animals (wild or domestic) don’t understand.

Surely some consideration in that regard wouldn’t be too much to ask.

And as schad said, it will very soon be Remembrance Sunday.

As she said, it is awful that we have weeks leading up to that with fireworks that sound like bombs.
