Neighbour asked us not to do fireworks?

I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

Go for it. People just like to suck the joy out of everything, you can't stop enjoying life for others and their issues, this year has been shit enough.

TibetanTerrier · 06/11/2020 00:50

Another aspect of this that I haven't seen mentioned is that the fire, police and ambulance services all over the country have been begging people not to have fireworks in their gardens. Every year people set fire to themselves and their houses, and suffer the most horrendous injuries from fireworks, and the emergency services are already far too stretched to deal with this. They're asking us not to do it this year - but all these idiots only care about having fun and are ignoring the pleas of the emergency services because they're selfish bastards.

dentydown · 06/11/2020 00:53

After hearing next doors dog freak out, I stopped all fireworks. We do sparklers and bonfires but that’s it. We haven’t done anything this year because of covid. I wasn’t sure of how it is with bonfires.

jacks11 · 06/11/2020 01:28

I HATE fireworks with a passion. The ban on private sales cannot happen soon enough in my opinion.

We know they cause damage and distress to wildlife, pets and livestock. Like Ferrari, i don’t understand why people who feel they must have their own display can’t use the quiet fireworks. I would say that I can’t believe the number of utterly selfish people, but the reality is I can.

Not to mention the number of people who are injured every year trying to set them off or fooling around. Could really do without that this year.

I lost a very special pony due to a neighbour having a private display. There was no warning and he mistakenly sent some of the fireworks in our direction, some far too close. We always take precautions, but there is only so much you can do. Pony was terrified and caused a horrific injury to himself and had to be put down after suffering terribly until the vet arrived. I’ve never forgiven that man. Just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it.

Having my children enjoying the fireworks at the expense of an animals distress would take away any pleasure for me.

That’s very sad, I’m so sorry that happened to your pony. I don’t know how you able to deal with that happening but I hope you are ok.

I hate fireworks and don’t understand why they are available to the public when they’re so dangerous.

Have you ever stopped to think what this time of the year is like for firemen? Have you ever talked to vets about injuries to animals? The sale of fireworks to the public should be banned. But no, we must pander to the self-centred who care only about their own pleasure.

PhilCornwall1 · 06/11/2020 05:11

Have you ever stopped to think what this time of the year is like for firemen?

Funnily enough yes. I was talking to one I train with on Tuesday night. He's been one for years and said it's no different to any other night.

flaviaritt · 06/11/2020 06:16

Do you suggest we stop breeding humans too because some have autism and the like, and they get in the way of a good old fireworks display ?

Pardon?

Where are they asking this? Seen nothing!

Stillgoings · 06/11/2020 07:18

I wish they'd ban them. My dog suffers terribly. Last night there were so.many all around us. I like my neighbours and I know it's been a bad year and it's nice to have a bit of fun and all but it's proper suffering ☹️

eaglejulesk · 06/11/2020 07:42

Funnily enough yes. I was talking to one I train with on Tuesday night. He's been one for years and said it's no different to any other night.

Well, that's strange, considering that I have just read this.

"Last year, we attended more than 2000 incidents over the
Halloween and Bonfire Night period - 29 October to 12 November."

"Over the last five years 45 percent of fires ignited by fireworks during the Bonfire Night period occurred at residential properties. There is a reason why firework displays and bonfires are normally organised by professionals in large spaces as they can get out of control very quickly."

Pugdogmom · 06/11/2020 08:31

As a dog owner, I would love to see private displays banned. I spent my whole night building dens for two terrified dogs and trying to control another who wouldn't stop barking....and yes they were medicated. My friend just messaged me to let me know her dog died of a heart attack last night in her arms. Plus my ASD daughter who had a meltdown too.
If you want to have Fireworks, at least have respect for your neighbours and don't let off the noisy ones. Last night it was so loud, you would have thought we were under attack.Angry

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 08:39

Doubt it, they've been going since 1605 and despite the "they should be banned" shouts every year, they've not been.

They have in some parts of the U.K.

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 08:43

My friend just messaged me to let me know her dog died of a heart attack last night in her arms.

Sad

Poor dog. And your poor friend. That must have been so awful for her. I hope everyone who has suffered in this way due to fireworks talks about it to everyone they know so people are in no doubt about the impact of these “few minutes” of delight “for the children” (only certain children, mind, not all)

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 08:46

Where is that then @Smallsteps88?

picklemewalnuts · 06/11/2020 08:47

They are much louder and closer than they used to be.

My current dog has been pretty good, but I get a bit uneasy myself. I'm sure it isn't safe so close to houses.

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 08:48

NI

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 08:56

But that's due to a very different reason and linked to the troubles @Smallsteps88. Not likely to happen on the main land.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 06/11/2020 08:56

Where are they asking this? Seen nothing!

I’ve seen it on twitter for various fire services and hospitals have also tweeted.

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 09:02

@Bookworming

Yes, banned because they were causing harm.... which is happening “on the mainland” so no reason at all to assume the same won’t happen there.
Bookworming · 06/11/2020 09:04

We will see @Smallsteps88 , but I bet these same threads are here this time next year....

Smallsteps88 · 06/11/2020 09:06

Of course they will, there’ll still be idiots next year.

Bookworming · 06/11/2020 09:09

And their will still be bigoted miseries next year @Smallsteps88!

No one letting off fireworks in a garden during permissible times is doing anything illegal! 🤷‍♀️

EatPrayYoga · 06/11/2020 09:13

I think it's fine that you gave a heads up and then went ahead because they can plan for it and try to make arrangements to protect the dog from them eg close curtains, put TV / music on etc.

I don't particularly like fireworks and I have pets but I didn't ask our NDN to stop with their fireworks.

lynsey91 · 06/11/2020 09:13

@chubbycheeks26

Have you seen the stories in the papers today about fireworks being thrown at police? Quite a few stories about fireworks being used as weapons in London, Scotland, Birmingham.

There will be many more people and animals that have been hurt or, the case of animals, killed but they don't make the papes.

But yes "go for it"
