I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

Why are people bringing dogs into a world where there are fireworks? Now THAT is selfish.

DenimDrift · 05/11/2020 21:36

well op didnt bother to come back to this.......interesting!!

Bocadilla · 05/11/2020 21:36

Hopefully fireworks for home sale will be banned shortly

Bookworming · 05/11/2020 21:37

My son was also terrified @Lozz22, used to be up very late until they stopped.

No way would I have even tried to stop people having fireworks, same as if a child is scared of dogs, really petrified. Would you ask your neighbour to get rid of their dog, for fear your child might walk out of the door at the same time?

No, of course you wouldn't 🙄

MrsJunglelow · 05/11/2020 21:38

We don’t get to decide how other people should get to behave
If that was the case we wouldn’t have set social norms/expectations in society though would we?

user686827 · 05/11/2020 21:39

Why is this debate just focusing on dog owners? I work in retail in a large high street chain and we had teenagers firing fireworks through our entrance doors last week, could have easily hit someone or started a fire. They went round several shops and restaurants locally. I really feel for the poor dogs, wildlife, livestock, but they are also being used by children and teenagers as weapons. I once had a firework fired at my child in a park.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 05/11/2020 21:39

Oh, you know. For company after my ex kicked twenty colours out of me. To replace the void that was left after my babies didn’t make it. So that I wouldn’t be totally alone.

Don’t worry though. I’m sat here, unselfish again because she died. And I’m very unselfishly dealing with ptsd on my own.

Bookworming · 05/11/2020 21:39

Doubt it, they've been going since 1605 and despite the "they should be banned" shouts every year, they've not been.

In fact you now find "pop up" shops selling just fireworks.

AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2020 21:43

It depends where you live. Our neighbours are a long way from where we set them off (we have a field) but previously when I was nearby to other neighbours I didn't use them. I don't want people to have their fun spoiled but I think there should be a rule that fireworks can only be set off outside X distance of other people. If you're very near to this other house and you already know their dog is traumatised then I just wouldn't do it.

Jokie · 05/11/2020 21:45

We have a dog who is absolutely petrified of fireworks. We've tried everything (including anxiety meds from the vets to calm her down) but nothing works. After doing everything the vets and trainers suggested, We now try to send her to a friendly kennels in the middle of nowhere for a few days around bonfire night so she can get some peace and isn't scared of the noise.

Sometimes, it's not as easy as "train" them.

Abouttimemum · 05/11/2020 21:45

Still banging away round here, 9.40pm and surely everybody’s kids are in bed by now. Which means it’s just teenagers being dickheads or it’s adults being dickheads.
I’m sick of people being twats, to be honest.

bit different in a covid ridden world now...
slipperywhensparticus · 05/11/2020 21:46

My neighbours cat used to move in with me every bonfire night and new year as her owner would lock her out when she went out she was terrified my cats spent ages calming her down every year

Mascaramademehappy · 05/11/2020 21:50

Sedating a dog is the worst thing you can do - it can still hear the frightening sound but is paralysed and unable to escape or self soothe.

I think you are really selfish to go ahead knowing you are going to cause real physical distress to an animal.

For all those saying they should train the dog, that’s fine and I agree however not everyone has owned their dog long enough to do that!

HazeyJaneII · 05/11/2020 21:50

I wish they'd just ban the sale of the fucking things and just have licensed public displays.

flaviaritt · 05/11/2020 21:51

Fireworks are a social norm.

Dogs are a social norm.

Joggers are a social norm.

We aren’t in charge of what other people do. Sorry.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/11/2020 21:58

There are no displays

You warned neighbours - polite and considerate

It’s nov 5th

Winterterrace · 05/11/2020 21:59

Valium doesn’t just sedate them. It calms them.

DenimDrift · 05/11/2020 22:03

who is picking up all the debris from these home displays??

lynsey91 · 05/11/2020 22:04

@ferretface

It is totally 100% possible to train pets to be ok with fireworks. It just takes a lot of time and you can't start two weeks before fireworks night.

I have a very reactive Border Collie who responds to most things that worry him with loud barking. All of his siblings are afraid of fireworks but because we have spent loads of time using desensitizing sounds for gunshots and fireworks, he is ok about those things and doesn't feel scared. Today both of our next door neighbours had backyard fireworks displays (never had them quite that close before) and this is my dog working away on his dinner while they went off.

For anyone with pets that are scared, look up the desensitizing sounds called Sounds Scary provided free by Dogs trust. There are a few on Spotify too. Use a speaker that can simulate a realistic sound but start very, very quiet. If your dog is getting worried, reduce the volume to start with. It takes a lot of repetitions before you can increase the volume.

Yes it is possible to train a dog to be ok with fireworks although I am not sure it works with all dogs especially rescue ones but it can so easily all be ruined by one arsehole.

As I already said above, I used a cd with noises including fireworks on my puppy when we got him 8 years ago. It worked and he was fine with fireworks and other loud noises.

Then I was walking him in broad daylight on or around the 14th November so not bonfire night or even particularly close and some total idiot let off a really loud firework as we walked past their garden. My poor dog was terrified and tried to run home nearly pulling me over in the process. If I had not been able to hold on to his lead he could easily have run into the busy road.

He has been terrified ever since. In fact he is even pretty worried now even when next door slam the lid of their wheely bin (which they do god knows how many times a day)

pinkprosseco · 05/11/2020 22:05

For all you saying it's selfish, have you looked at your own behaviour? Some people are very frightened of dogs but I imagine that doesn't stop you walking them.
I am a dog owner, but I accept that's my choice and it's up to me to make sure I do everything to keep him calm (which I do and he is).
OP shouldn't be criticised for celebrating fireworks same as we can all choose to own dogs.

Thermo · 05/11/2020 22:05

Imagine a world where we have to drug innocent animals to cope with humans stupid unnecessary love for lighting up explosives for entertainment ....

Butchyrestingface · 05/11/2020 22:06

I'd love to see the Venn diagram for people who release fireworks and bangers in built up areas and those who release shite tonnes of balloons into the sky when someone dies.

DirtyDancing · 05/11/2020 22:08

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

go for it. my son has panic attacks when dogs run up to him, but people still walk dogs every single day.
Ha ha this
flaviaritt · 05/11/2020 22:08

We don’t have to. People actively choose to breed dogs as pets for entertainment. If the dogs don’t like loud noises, they sometimes choose to drug them.

Why don’t people just stop breeding captive animals for fun?
