only 61% of the ballots in Philadelphia (a very large, overwhelmingly blue city) have been counted

Associated Press are saying 85% now ... looks like somebody's woken 'em up!!

Justanotherlurker · 04/11/2020 20:54

Look at the shit going on in Detroit at the minute, CNN/SKY both reported earlier that Democrats were allowed to observe but not Republicans

This is not going to end for some time.

emilyfrost · 04/11/2020 20:55

Of course Trump can still win. It’s anyone’s game right now it’s not possible to call either way.

MadameMinimes · 04/11/2020 20:56

Yep. Pennsylvania looks very much like it is going Biden’s way and I think Trump knows it. That’s why he’s so frantically trying to stop the counting there.

sergeilavrov · 04/11/2020 21:00

@Justanotherlurker The Trump campaign claim to have filed a suit, but nothing has been registered. It seems that more than the 268 maximum of monitors showed up, and some of those who are used to watching were turned away as a result. The process relies on self-identification, with each party allowed half of that allocation, and Republicans allege that non-profits like the ACLU have registered as Republican representatives instead of Democrats. Officially, they could register as either as they are technically non-partisan. May be a case of early birds getting the worm, and will be interesting to see if the campaign actually files a suit.

It's unlikely to matter, as observation is also done electronically.

Hang on, 85% of the ballots in Pennsylvania ( big state beginning with P and ending with A ,containing Philadelphia- big city begiining with P and ending in A-) have been counted.

(it also contains Pittsburgh, another "P" city. To be frank, it's all horribly confusing, and I can only distinguish between them because I've been watching "This is Us" on Amazon Prime).

Fridgeandkitchen · 04/11/2020 21:01

Can someone tell me how to watch these last results come in?

Lis4Laughter · 04/11/2020 21:01

Wine here's to hope

MissConductUS · 04/11/2020 21:02

@Rosehip10

Assuming Biden wins, will it be difficult for him to achieve stuff with the likely republican retention of senate control?
Yes, and it's likely that a lot of people voted for republican senate candidates because they anticipated Biden winning. Split governments tend to be less radical as they have to compromise to get things done.
lioncitygirl · 04/11/2020 21:02

Not yet I don’t think. Looks likely though.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/11/2020 21:02

I don't have Twitter, nor am I selectively framing anything as I've no idea what happened in Seattle.

Instead I've been watching ABC news for last 10 hours - so far there have been several legal challenges reported. All by Trump.

And two tweets reported by ABC news that Trump has tweeted.

So I'm taking what I know so far from FACTS Hmm

sergeilavrov · 04/11/2020 21:03

@Fridgeandkitchen You can check out live streams. Here are the , and links.

christinarossetti19 · 04/11/2020 21:03

Michigan is looking pretty secure for Biden. Nearly all votes counted and Biden over 1% ahead.

Then he needs Nevada who won't be declaring for many hours.

Trump will take Georgia, Pennsylvania and Alaska. Without Nevada won't get to the 270 needed.

Have North Carolina officially declared yet?

WitchesSpelleas · 04/11/2020 21:03

@Fridgeandkitchen

Can someone tell me how to watch these last results come in?
Google 'us election' and an Associated Press live window should come up at the top of the results which updates every couple of minutes.

Don't bother with the BBC who are only updating every couple of hours.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2020 21:04

Apologies, crackofdoom - totally my mistake
Like a fool I saw Philadelphia but read Pennsylvania ... as you suggested, too many big words with a P at the start and an A at the end!! Blush

LaurieFairyCake · 04/11/2020 21:04

ABC on YouTube is streaming live

sergeilavrov · 04/11/2020 21:05

@christinarossetti19 North Carolina have 117,000ish ballots outstanding, and postal ballots have until the 12th November to arrive, so I wouldn't anticipate getting a solid result until then.

ShagMeRiggins · 04/11/2020 21:05

This thread has been fascinating and articulate, and it’s been a reasonable discussion that has kept me calm.

I thank you, my fingernails thank you, and well done to all the posters who are providing interesting facts and informed options.

So (apologies) snaps for mumsnet. Grin

Ravenesque · 04/11/2020 21:06

They're not expecting the result in Pennsylvania until possibly Friday.

Biden has definitely not got it sewed up. I really, really, really hope he does win it but with the electoral college numbers so far it's still very much either man's to win. Obviously, if Biden is pronounced the winner Trump won't stop until he's taken it all the way to the Supreme court and tries to bully them into giving him the election.

Whatever the outcome - please let it be Biden who wins - the really depressing thing to me is that more people voted for Trump this time after four years of him being one of the worst human beings on the planet. Then again, we voted in the Tories and we knew what Johnson was like, so we're all stuck in some sort of racist Stockholm Syndrome or something.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 04/11/2020 21:07

Biden has been elected because he isn’t Donald Trump, not because he has an inspiring vision or a compelling manifesto for change. He will have the House of Representatives on his side, but not the Senate. His party is divided between those who want a return to ‘business as usual’ politics and those who want radical change.

@AgeLikeWine, I so agree with this statement! I live in a strongly Democratic area and even the staunchest Dems among my friends have admitted that they're supporting Biden simply because he's not Trump, not because they're inspired by his leadership or vision. Personally I think the Democrats need to take a long look at what they've been getting wrong since Obama left office, because they're not presenting the country with inspiring leaders - and Trump's behavior should've made this Presidential election an easy win for them. But it's a tight race!

I'm frustrated with the lot of them atm.

52andblue · 04/11/2020 21:07

@Marshmallow91

Trump will only leave the Whitehouse by sniper while on the roof, clutching a post-divorce melania in his paws.

He's not going quietly. He's one of the few people on earth who's genuinely out of his fucking mind AND a moron, that has enough power to wriggle out of legalities.

I hate very few people on this earth, but he is most certainly one of them.

I'm hoping Biden will win, but at this stage they could be giving it to kermit the fucking frog and I'd still be elated.

This. 100% this.
JingsMahBucket · 04/11/2020 21:07

@Newjez

I think the democrats do need to think about why trump was so popular
Because white people love white supremacy. This isn't rocket science.
52andblue · 04/11/2020 21:09

And @Ravenesque Yy to the racist Stockholm Syndrome that seems to be going on, both sides of the Atlantic :(

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 04/11/2020 21:09

Pennsylvania will accept postal votes as long as they have today's postmark and they will have to be received by 6th November.

#itsnotoveruntilitsover

Postal votes are more likely to be for Biden.

CNN coverage drills right down to county level so you can see the real detail.

US postal service has allegedly misplaced 300,000 postal votes

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 04/11/2020 21:09

@Justanotherlurker

That info was being spun by the administration. There are democratic and Republican poll challengers inside the counting in Detroit. Two people were removed, one woman for refusing to pull her mask up ove the nose and one man who was behaving in a manner reminiscent of The Joker and wearing a creepy mask. The complaint that Republicans arent allowed in isnt going to hold up.
