Can someone explain in simple English what 'wokeness' means?

@SarahBellam

It’s a lazy insult when you can’t be bothered to engage in discussion about the actual issues.
People literally have engaged. Right here, right now!
user1471565182 · 04/11/2020 20:25

Nice bit of stirring

Stripesnomore · 04/11/2020 20:26

If woke people don’t want to be called woke, they could maybe suggest a term to refer to their ideology that they would like people to use.

They can't do thay because there isn't a genuine set of values or ideology that they care about beyond massaging their own ego and pretending to care about whatever is trending on social media.

For a while quite a few woke leaders were talking the talk on period poverty, but seem suspiciously quiet on issues of misogyny, threats of sexual violence to women, disability discrimination, austerity and poverty, and other non trending topics.

Quite a woke position there. Anyone who mocks the woke mustn't be as stunningly intelligent as the woke.

In my experience, the woke don't want discussion or debate. They want a circle jerk where they all congratulate each other on how right their right think is and pat themselves on the back for not being a bigot (which seems to have changed meaning to mean anyone who expresses an alternative view to the woke).

Stripesnomore · 04/11/2020 20:36

‘They can't do thay because there isn't a genuine set of values or ideology that they care about beyond massaging their own ego and pretending to care about whatever is trending on social media.’

Intersectionality, privilege and queer theory are all unique to wokeness. Those are all ideological.

WitchFindersAreEverywhere · 04/11/2020 20:48

@BrumBoo

Its being incredibly 'right on' about social injustice, but usually (ironically) using very narrow view points and chosing to ignore any contrary opinion to the point of seemingly losing all critical thinking skills. Usually a mind set of 'good guys vs bad guys'.
Yes, ‘woke’ beliefs also often show themselves in an inability to discuss subjects calmly, rationally and evidence-based. Repetition without analysis or development of critical thought. My adult DD is very woke, there are certain topics we avoid discussing because we share a house and need boundaries if debate is impossible. Not all, just one or two. Wokeness seemed more related to a Faith/Belief system than something open to analysis.
Stripesnomore · 04/11/2020 20:51

Witchfinders, yes, I think it is really helpful to think of it as a religion when talking to people who believe in it. It helps to get on with them better and avoid arguments.

It’s when you fly in to attend an extinction rebellion protest, when you tell people to support local businesses because it’s worth ‘paying a little more’. It’s when you put BLM banners on social media but have no idea what the majority of BAME people really think about BLM. It’s when you start to call yourself a ‘progressive’.

Amanduh · 04/11/2020 21:01

It’s what people who slate people with genuine concerns as ‘gammon’ are called.

LolaSmiles · 04/11/2020 21:01

Not really. Privilege comes up in feminism and I'd not say feminism is a hot bed of wokeness.

It's a shame the idea of privilege isn't routinely upheld by the woke brigade though. Too often it seems like those principles depend entirely on which topic in identity politics is the one trending due it being the one privileged (generally) young adults think will make them look good. It's the political equivalent of claiming your 3 days in an orphanage on your gap yah is a sign of compassion for poverty.

Interestingly, it's rarely women, rarely the genuinely poor, rarely the socially and economically disadvantaged, rarely the elderly, rarely those with life long conditions.

Stripesnomore · 04/11/2020 21:03

Some feminists are woke and some aren’t, just as with any other political issue. The woke ones frame things in terms of privilege.

HotGlueGun · 04/11/2020 21:06

@Wearywithteens love this analogy. Spot on

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/11/2020 21:07

From wiki:
^Woke(/ˈwoʊk/WOHK) is a political term originating in the United States referring to a perceived awareness of issues concerningsocial justiceandracial justice. It derives from theAfrican-American Vernacular Englishexpression "stay woke", whosegrammatical aspectrefers to a continuing awareness of these issues.

By the late 2010s,wokehad been adopted as a more generic slang term broadly associated withleft-wing politics, socially liberal and cultural issues (with the termswoke cultureandwoke politicsalso being used). It has also been the subject ofmemes, ironic usage and criticism. Its widespread use since 2014 is a result of theBlack Lives Mattermovement.

LolaSmiles · 04/11/2020 21:08

Stripesnomore
Some feminists are woke. Usually the ones who don't care for women that much.

But plenty of radical feminists I know have spoken in terms of male privilege and I'd not consider them woke. I'd say they're closer to old school activists and people with genuine passion for their area of concern.

Magicbabywaves · 04/11/2020 21:13

Originally it was an African American term which was used when a (black) person ‘woke’ to the treatment they received.
Somehow it was taken over to mean (white) people realising ‘their privilege’ and being woke was realising the part systematic racism plays. Now, it’s become an anti-left sentiment.

Raceless · 04/11/2020 21:17

So, if you talk about male privilege, you're not accused of being "woke".
If you talk about white privilege, you are?

Or are they in the same boat?

topcat2014 · 04/11/2020 21:17

Found this thread really useful. Not really sure what bigot means either

Stripesnomore · 04/11/2020 21:22

Lola, I think some of the ideas have spread beyond the core believers and some people now have a blend of different perspectives, including a bit of woke.

They are often the ones most likely to get bullied by the woke!

LockdownLump · 04/11/2020 21:24

It means giving a shit about something other than yourself

It’s a lazy insult when you can’t be bothered to engage in discussion about the actual issues

Neither of them describe 'woke', but you're on the right track to showing that you think you're totally woke.

It's a moral superiority about fashionable topics, were the 'woke' view is the only correct view.

Woke people usually think white middle aged women are 'karen's', who because they don't agree with the woke brigade, are dumb and know absolutely nothing about the topic of the day. Usually gender politics.

LockdownLump · 04/11/2020 21:25

*where

Raceless · 04/11/2020 21:30

So if your main interest is women's rights and issues, you're not accused of wokeness, virtue signalling and being professionally offended.

If your main interest is black people's rights and issues, you are?

Or are they in the same boat?

NotYouAgainTom · 04/11/2020 21:31

Painfully virtue signalling

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/11/2020 21:33

My interpretation is.
People who love to find offensive in everything.
Try and often succeed to Cancel and shut down anyone who has the damn audacity to think different to them.
Have double standards.

Stripesnomore · 04/11/2020 21:34

‘So if your main interest is women's rights and issues, you're not accused of wokeness, virtue signalling and being professionally offended.

If your main interest is black people's rights and issues, you are?

Or are they in the same boat?’

People who take a rights based approach usually aren’t woke. It makes no difference if it is about race or sex.
