To think people will expect fireworks to be let off on bonfire night.

Bought a few fireworks for Thursday night. Mainly garden type fireworks, not rockets. Meant to be lower noise.

We live in fairly large village and it’s been said that many dogs, cats, horses etc don’t like them and people have complained about them being let off.

Aibu to think people should expect them on actual bonfire night though?

I get that they are annoying on other nights other than bonfire night.. I do think that people should try and just do them on 5th November or NYE and proper advertised displays.

Don’t want to upset my neighbours!

Everyone talking about tradition. Well blood sports are a tradition, should we have just allowed fox hunting to continue because it's tradition? The same foxes that will be terrified by fireworks chased and killed by a group of hounds?
And whoever said that bonfire night has been around longer than dogs, seeing as dogs were domesticated 20,000 to 40,000 years ago and Guy Fawkes was about 400 years ago your argument is somewhat flawed.

Fireworks are great on Bonfire Night! 🔥🔥🔥🚀🚀🚀

Maybe not so much the rest of the year but I'm tight so love looking out of the loft window at everyone else's fireworks going off!

FourTeaFallOut · 03/11/2020 20:48

Longer than your dog and every other dog in the country, not dogs as a species.

Witchcraftandhokum · 03/11/2020 20:48

I think YABU, but I think people who use fireworks outside of an organised display are selfish arseholes.

My grandma with dementia was also very distresed whenever fireworks were happening. Her care home was awful on bonfire night and NYE, according to the carers.

I really think they should only be allowed at licenced displays. They're dangerous, anti-social, and environmentally unfriendly.

You are allowed to let them off, of course, but your neighbours are allowed to think you're a selfish arsehole for doing so.

ChloeCrocodile · 03/11/2020 20:54

I love fireworks. When I hear the neighbours setting them off I sneak to a window to watch. My mum usually hosts bonfire night and I’m gutted we can’t do that this year.

Of course they aren’t essential, but we don’t ban everything non-essential - even things which cause upset or harm to others. Strong perfume triggers my DSis’s asthma but it isn’t banned in public places. Dogs terrify my niece but they aren’t banned.

@ScrapThatThen

I have come to the conclusion that it has tipped into being socially unacceptable these days. I wouldn't have thought twice three years ago.

Sorry for the double post.

@popcornlover

Stop with the fireworks. Think about the intense stress you are causing animals in your area. In fact, you know this as you stated in your post, but you’re going to do it anyway. Grow the F up. Get a handle on yourself. Why do you need fireworks anyway? Are they essential for your mental health or something?
Is your pet essential to your health and well being?

I wouldn’t, I understand them at big events. But my dog, cats and DC hate them. I dread bonfire night and New Year’s Eve.

Doggybiccys · 03/11/2020 21:00

Too many arseholes doing public display level fireworks in semi’s until 1 in the morning. It’s all just “look at us, we are such a great family having fun”. A bit like grown ups taking over Halloween. Most kids would be happy With sparklers and a chocolate fountain but dad the dick needs to have the biggest display in the neighbourhood.

CatsAndEyeliner · 03/11/2020 21:05

The thing is one neighbour does it at 6pm, then another at 7pm, another at 8:30, etc etc etc all the way up to 1am.

I have no problem with a public fireworks display but backyard fireworks are a YABU from me.

CatsAndEyeliner · 03/11/2020 21:07

Two fireworks went off here at 7pm. My dog is still shaking.

emilyfrost · 03/11/2020 21:10

YABU. Nobody should be letting off their own fireworks, and to do so in a residential area is unacceptable.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 03/11/2020 21:10

Organised displays are something I can sort of get behind. But “garden” fireworks are fucking terrible. Aside from any Joe blogs being able to buy them and let them off anywhere, and anytime, the wildlife can’t be prepared at all. It must be horrible to be wildlife, from the fires and noises to discarded firework tubes and sparklers being ingested. And how many people actually teach their kids about the meaning of bonfire night? Not many I bet. Luckily my dog is fine with fireworks but really feel for those who have to deal with animals or children (even adults) who are scared of them.

FourTeaFallOut · 03/11/2020 21:14

And how many people actually teach their kids about the meaning of bonfire night?

I think it would be easier to count up the children who don't know the history behind bonfire night, surely? I mean, it's on the primary curriculum, isn't it?

Veryverycalmnow · 03/11/2020 21:18

We're self- isolating and time is going VERY slowly. DS asked if it was Bonfire night soon and I told him yes, we'd be able to watch some fireworks out of the window. Then thought, what if it's all cancelled? I'm hoping people (safely) set off a few pretty- but not noisy- ones from gardens!

CorianderLord · 03/11/2020 21:19

And how many people actually teach their kids about the meaning of bonfire night?

Every child raised in Britain knows at least vaguely about Guy Fawkes. They teach it in primary - everyone's written an acrostic poem on the subject in November by the age of 11 😂

MoodieMare · 03/11/2020 21:21

I worked in a home during my training. It was ok for those who still had the capacity to understand, even if they didn't like them. Not so much for those who didn't have that capacity.
Same problems where I work now, people with different issues. I feel for my colleagues on bonfire night this year, though we've already had several nights of having the whole unit disturbed at stupid times.

DrCoconut · 03/11/2020 21:58

I wish there were quieter organised displays. They are always huge big bangers that make the ground shake. I like the fountains that shoot sparks and make a hissing sound. Or sparklers.

PhilSwagielka · 03/11/2020 22:00

I live in Manchester. It's not Bonfire Night, it's Bonfire FORTNIGHT. It would be nice if dickheads didn't let them off during the day though.

I've got Feliway, so I'll switch it on and give my cat lots of treats and put some music on to drown out the fireworks. I'm not letting him out.

PeterPanNeverLands · 03/11/2020 22:00

I honestly wish I could could send a video of my beautiful rescue dog last year to show people the damage they can cause to pets not to mention people with PTSD, dementia, young kids.

Stupid, selfish and needless for them to be set off for private displays. Sedation is great if you know it's happening but 15 minutes here and there for 2 weeks an sometimes multiple times a night is absolutely ridiculous.

I don't understand why people find it so hard to not be so inconsiderate.
