To think people will expect fireworks to be let off on bonfire night.

Bought a few fireworks for Thursday night. Mainly garden type fireworks, not rockets. Meant to be lower noise.

We live in fairly large village and it’s been said that many dogs, cats, horses etc don’t like them and people have complained about them being let off.

Aibu to think people should expect them on actual bonfire night though?

I get that they are annoying on other nights other than bonfire night.. I do think that people should try and just do them on 5th November or NYE and proper advertised displays.

Don’t want to upset my neighbours!

@Judystilldreamsofhorses

We have had fireworks going off here since last weekend. Our cat is s nervous wreck. If it was just organised nights like bonfire night, new year, Diwali etc then it would be much more manageable rather than random half hours for a week. She has spent the evenings hiding in the hall cupboard with a white noise app playing, crying and shaking.
The fact lockdown was announced and has made some official events move forward and be more spread out has made this year significantly harder to manage.
catchabreak2020 · 03/11/2020 19:56

I don’t think fireworks at any time of year on any day are okay, I’ve some people are giving the COVID excuse but it just doesn’t cut it. I’m not for organised displays either but at least they are controlled. If they can cause distress to wildlife they should not be allowed.

youdidask · 03/11/2020 19:56

You can't take a drink on an airplane but you can buy explosives to play with I. Your garden.

I bloody hate that anyone can buy fireworks and let them off whenever they want.

Runnerduck34 · 03/11/2020 20:02

Yanbu to let off fireworks on November 5th (or nearest weekend) especially as there will be no organised displays this year. Bonfire night is an important part of our heritage

Well, it's not illegal, obviously, but it should be

FourTeaFallOut · 03/11/2020 20:07

From MistyMonday's link:

"The group’s recommendations, published on Tuesday, include localised “no-firework zones”, limits on the times of day fireworks can be sold and the number that can be bought together, and restrictions on when they can be set off. It also proposes making it an offence for adults to buy fireworks on behalf of under-18s."

All that seems perfectly reasonable. I don't think it would scratch the MN banning itch though.

I was in a taxi on fireworks night a couple of years ago. I had a lovely driver, a refugee from the Congo, really nice guy. He told me that when he first arrived in the UK, fireworks night happened and he was in his hostel room when he first heard them. He was absolutely terrified and thought war was breaking out. He hid in his wardrobe but they didn’t stop so he ran outside in his pyjamas, hiding in doorways as previous life experience in a warzone had taught him. He found a payphone and called his support worker in an absolute state asking whether a war had broken out here in the UK and if he should help join the army. The lady kindly calmed him down and explained the traditio . He was a kindly man and chuckled at himself but he said he still felt anxious and uneasy at the sounds each year.

If you can’t feel compassion for the panic-stricken pets and wildlife, the ones dying of fear induced heart attacks, maybe those humans with PTSD, SEN or dementia who are also terrified by fireworks might make you think?

Or is it shiny thing go bang time?

MiddlesexGirl · 03/11/2020 20:13

I'm in favour of banning the sale of fireworks to the general public.

At least there will be no parties this year unless people get them in before Thursday ......

CorianderLord · 03/11/2020 20:13

There's been fireworks in the park opposite us for a week and a half

HavelockVetinari · 03/11/2020 20:14

@Bramblespoint

I think it's ok on bonfire night. It's to be expected and pet owners should take steps to help their pets if distressed.

Some people hate dogs or are allergic- we don't ban them!

Just be considerate. There will always be people who are inconsiderate with fireworks and equally with their animals.
A dog recently jumped up at my daughter and barked. Owner laughed it off, didn't/couldn't recall dog and said she was only playing. She may have been but dd was terrified.

We will make sure our pets are as comfortable as we can on 5th as we will expect fireworks

This is a lovely moderate post, I agree wholeheartedly. Smile
nosswith · 03/11/2020 20:15

As you do not want to upset your neighbours, don't let them off.

Ohtherewearethen · 03/11/2020 20:16

You see some shite on here sometimes but some of these gems really take the biscuit. 'My child is scared of dogs so I'm going to scare dogs'. 'I felt anxious about lockdown and fireworks help me relax'. And as for the bizarre rant about how many parties and husbands a poster has...well, I don't really know what to say about that.
People who think extremely loud fireworks are essential to them having fun, experiencing joy or dog scaring are utterly selfish human beings. I cannot describe how selfish you are. They are dangerous explosives that put a strain on the emergency services at the best of times, let alone during covid times. They are harmful to the environment. They cause animals and wildlife to die of fright and injure themselves trying to escape the noise. People who may already be experiencing financial hardship due to covid or anything else, have to spend ££s at the vets to drug their pets up to their eyeballs just so they can cope. People with MH conditions, PTSD, dementia and others can be utterly traumatised by them. Children wake up frightened. There is no way to opt out if you don't like it. It is forced on everybody and everything nearby whether they like it or not. And people are defending it because it's not illegal, it scares dogs and it helped them relieve lockdown anxiety (never kind the anxiety it causes many other people and animals). You honestly sound like a load of bloody Trump supporters.

Temporarything · 03/11/2020 20:17

I hate them and so does our dog. They are too noisy.

Dreading Thursday tbh.

jessstan1 · 03/11/2020 20:19

I had to go out the front earlier and heard a few fireworks go off.

lockdownconfused · 03/11/2020 20:23

It's fine op bonfire night is for fireworks! I have children and we'll be letting off a few fireworks ( fountains ) not big banging ones as they scare the younger ones.

popcornlover · 03/11/2020 20:31

Stop with the fireworks. Think about the intense stress you are causing animals in your area. In fact, you know this as you stated in your post, but you’re going to do it anyway. Grow the F up. Get a handle on yourself. Why do you need fireworks anyway? Are they essential for your mental health or something?

MrsJBaptiste · 03/11/2020 20:40

Fireworks are great on Bonfire Night! 🔥🔥🔥🚀🚀🚀

Maybe not so much the rest of the year but I'm tight so love looking out of the loft window at everyone else's fireworks going off!

goose1964 · 03/11/2020 20:41

My DD is terrified of fireworks ,and one of our cats used to climb into the windowsill and watch them. I think if they aren't the noisy ones then you should be fine.

Amytree · 03/11/2020 20:44

Yeah on bonfire night. No to the 5 days either side. As a dog owner who had to hug my dog tightly for 30 mins earlier as she was cowering I hate fireworks but will put up with them for one night a year or maybe two as NYE just as bad now.
