To think people will expect fireworks to be let off on bonfire night.

Bought a few fireworks for Thursday night. Mainly garden type fireworks, not rockets. Meant to be lower noise.

We live in fairly large village and it’s been said that many dogs, cats, horses etc don’t like them and people have complained about them being let off.

Aibu to think people should expect them on actual bonfire night though?

I get that they are annoying on other nights other than bonfire night.. I do think that people should try and just do them on 5th November or NYE and proper advertised displays.

Don’t want to upset my neighbours!

People expect them. Doesn't mean they're happy about it. Animals are often so afraid they do serious harm to themselves. I dont think they should be legal for purchase. They also leave dangerous waste all over our our streets and countryside. Animals eat them and get seriously ill. Kids pick them up and they go off and harm them. And for God's sake could we stop throwing unnecessary waste into the air?! Balloon releases can fuck off aswell.

Halliehallie9828 · 03/11/2020 18:54

Yes it’s fine. People should expect it on bonfire night.

I don’t know why everyone is giving there opinion on them. You didn’t ask that.

My parents dog isn’t bothered about fireworks either.

StillMedusa · 03/11/2020 18:55

I wish they were illegal except in organised displays.. that way people with PSTD or pets have the option to avoid them.. there is no option if it's your neighbour.
I dislike them because a neighbour's came over the fence by mistake and I had burning lump land in my hood. My dog is beyond petrified.

Foxyloxxy7 · 03/11/2020 19:01

I so wish that fireworks were limited to organised displays. The pet thing is the least of it. People clog up A&E and the fire service causing emergencies with their amateur garden displays. And the packaging of the fireworks get littered everywhere. Little plastic pieces that kill local wildlife and pollute the oceans. I don’t get people’s fascination with letting them off in their back garden. Leave it to the pros.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/11/2020 19:01

There were fireworks round here on Saturday and Sunday. Some of them were the kind that reverberate through your chest. There have more of them tonight.

Kcar · 03/11/2020 19:03

If you’re in England people might be expecting them but there are other countries in the world....

I really object to them in small gardens. They’re terrifying and dangerous - one hit my neighbours car a few years ago.

“I don’t know why everyone is giving there opinion on them. You didn’t ask that.”

OP literally asked ‘is it okay to let a few off?’ If that’s not asking for other people’s opinions I don’t know what is.

MintyMabel · 03/11/2020 19:10

Do it. Enjoy it. Ignore the whinging dog owners. They don’t give a shit when my child is terrified of their dog, I don’t give a shit their dog is afraid of my fireworks.

SpilltheTea · 03/11/2020 19:11

Yes, it's fine.

Puffalicious · 03/11/2020 19:13

So if I were your neighbour, I wouldn't say anything but I'd think you were selfish and a bit thick

This kind of comment is MN at its middle class, uppity best. I would find you a bit 'thick' for not making adjustments for one night of the year (earphones/ acclimatising pets).

You'd hate me as a neighbour: huge Halloween party usually, fireworks on the 5th, traditional summer BBQ for 50 people, Boxing day for 4 siblings and 13 DN and DNs. God forbid me for having fun and a life. Oh, and I have 3DC, an ex husband and a present husband so we have 3 surnames on our door sign, shock, horror!!!

StepAwayFromGoogle · 03/11/2020 19:16

They're banned in Ireland. Can't wait till they're banned here. And god only knows why they have to bang and you can't just have a pretty light display instead.

StepAwayFromGoogle · 03/11/2020 19:18

@Puffalicious - what a ridiculous comment. How would you suggest people 'acclimatise' their pets?!? FFS.

grapewine · 03/11/2020 19:22

@PaddyF0dder

I mean, it’s a sectarian holiday and it’s massively upsetting to animals and small kids.

But shiny thing go bang.

And some adults.

People will expect it, and it's not illegal, but personally I hate this time of year because of fireworks.

Furbs · 03/11/2020 19:25

Earphones in a dog 😂 aye nae bother hen, I'll go crack on with that, would you suggest some classical or a bit of jazz? Hip hop maybe...

And to mintymabel my dog wouldn't even look at your child. I would suggest calling the police if all dog owners in your area allow their dogs out to terrify kids, but then I doubt they do.

StCharlotte · 03/11/2020 19:25

@Elizaaa

I would prefer that they were only allowed at organised displays but understand people will sometimes need to have their own now - which I would be ok with IF it was only certain nights, not the two weeks either side too.
I am curious as to why that is happening given that no one is going to be anywhere else on the 5th (or Saturday).

Will be interesting to see how Lewes deal with it this year. I don't believe for one minute they won't be doing something - especially with that bonfire they haven't built Wink

Furbs · 03/11/2020 19:26

On a dog... in fairness he'd probably dislike earphones inside him about as much as he would on his lugs

Justnoopinion · 03/11/2020 19:26

I'm not a big fan of fireworks in gardens personally, mainly because I've been scarred by all those adverts telling you the many ways they will kill you. Plus scaring animals / waking young children etc. But I'm not a total killjoy I wouldn't complain about others doing it (just silently curse to myself Grin)

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/11/2020 19:27

It's high time fireworks were banned.

GlowingOrb · 03/11/2020 19:32

People will expect it.
They will still be annoyed and think poorly of you.

TiersTiersTiers · 03/11/2020 19:41

I have a working dog (but she don't work) and no fear at all - sounds like a shotgun.

Puppies when young can be trained to not respond to noise/to socialise with other dogs/children/people/animals, to come to call, to not be bothered with a vacuum the TV a car journey.

The thing is - people with dogs moan about this every year - the tradition has been around longer than the dog - and think unreasonable for people to have fireworks.
Yet same dog owner might think a dog off lead charging up to children/adults other dogs ok - yet others find that scary.....

Well I will have fireworks to light up the sky and bring some delight to children and some adults and ignore the 'moaning minnies' that appear to moan about pretty much anything anyway.

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 03/11/2020 19:42

They have a negative effect on other people and animals, it’s your choice to do it or not.

As someone part of a PTSD therapy group for service people, even with preparation people in all stages of PTSD can really struggle with fireworks. All of the leaders of the group have been available every evening since last Wednesday and will be until the start of next week. I can’t really hide how much I despise fireworks (as fireworks continue to go off outside and I am continually managing triggers and avoiding dissociation flash backs)

TiersTiersTiers · 03/11/2020 19:42

doesn't not don't Grin

MoodieMare · 03/11/2020 19:42

Depends how close you are to horses/livestock given that it's illegal to set them off near horses and livestock in fields and barns etc that contain horses or livestock. Under the animal welfare act 2006.
We have to stand on firewatch over the yard and barns to ensure stray fireworks don't cause a fire. But then we'd be there anyway as some of the horses are sedated and can't be left either.
I will be reporting anyone setting them off close enough for debris to end up in the fields and around the yards and barns and push for prosecution.
I don't want to ruin anyone's fun but I also don't want to spend night after night putting out fires or trying desperately to calm horses and other livestock because someone else wants a bit of fun.
We've tried, asking, pleading and pointing the law out, nothing works, people aren't bothered about the effect they're having or the potential dangers, so why the fuck do I need to be bothered about someone else's bit of fun?

TiersTiersTiers · 03/11/2020 19:48

It is possible to get silent or low noise although may be a bit late now.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/11/2020 19:51

We have had fireworks going off here since last weekend. Our cat is s nervous wreck. If it was just organised nights like bonfire night, new year, Diwali etc then it would be much more manageable rather than random half hours for a week. She has spent the evenings hiding in the hall cupboard with a white noise app playing, crying and shaking.
