@myhobbyisouting you clearly have a problem with me and with my drawing comparisons between bell ringing and clapping for the NHS and clapping for remembrance day. Which is something I have seen mentioned on social media specific to my village.
I find all 3 to be either insulting or just horrible ideas. Which is why I answered the question - I will not be bothering to join in.

jcyclops · 05/11/2020 21:49

I needed a new hobby during lockdown, and decided on bell ringing. The only problem - it really annoys the bus drivers.

myhobbyisouting · 05/11/2020 22:06

@ToffeePennie I don't have a problem with you, although I'm slightly bemused about you finding jingle bells by children insulting.

Personally, I would have to tell my neighbours that had organised it that they might've got mixed messages and that clapping isn't really the way to go on Remembrance Day. I'm sure they would change it to a silence.

Hahaha88 · 05/11/2020 22:13

@Lindy2

Who owns a bell? Where do you buy one?

I'm planning on using the one from my cat's collar. I will take the collar off the cat first though - I'm not planning on shaking the whole cat. 😂

Not often have I actually laughed out loud when I've said lol but seriously lol at this! Can just picture thr poor cat getting shook at the door 🤣

See
I didn’t do the clapping for the NHS for more person reasons and just didn’t understand the concept and we were in hospital for 4 of those Thursdays and it was eye opening.
The ringing the bell on Xmas eve is just a bit of harmless cheer for the kids. I will do it on the basis that I know my daughter will enjoy it.

Hahaha88 · 05/11/2020 22:19

They are probably the type who are getting the decorations down from the loft very soon and watching Christmas films already and saying how many sleeps it is until Christmas. I know because my sister is one of them.

Well this isn't true. I'm the above and I'm not going to do the bells. Mostly cos we already have our own Xmas traditions and I don't understand why everyone seems to think Xmas is going to be poop for kids this year especially in Xmas eve! Tbf I don't do elf on the shelf either

Didn’t realise this would be such a contentious thread! It was set up as a local thing near me and has grown considerably in a really short space of time!

Fair enough @Hahaha88 but I expect there would be quite an overlap on a Venn diagram of people who are putting their decorations up soon (or already have done so!) and people bell ringing. Enjoy your traditions, Christmas can be different this year but for those able to be with their families that is a good enough thing to be celebrated.
MoonJelly · 09/11/2020 00:01

@flowerycurtain

It would be lovely if all the church bells could ring out at say 9am in xmas day even if we can't have services.
You do realise that bells are rung by volunteers? I rather doubt that you are going to get enough skilled volunteers who want to abandon their families, present-opening and cooking to flog out before 9 on Christmas Day to climb up to a cold bellower and start ringing.

@lyralalala

I'm actually loving this idea. Mainly because when DD3 (6.5yo) heard about it she asked why it was needed when Santa normally finds his way around just fine. She's at that point now where she's starting to disbelieve in Santa.

DH, without thinking, said it was because Rudolph would have a mask on this year so it would be more difficult. About an hour later she asked DH why Raven, our cat, didn't have a mask on and DH told her cats were exempt. She asked why and he said because cat ears make it too difficult to put a mask on as they are soft.

This was about 4/5 days ago and hearing DD pipe up "Daddy, what about X animal. Do they have to wear a mask?" about 25 times a day has been the highlight of my year because the "Why the fuck did I even say that?" look in DH's eyes is hilarious Grin

T

Grin That made me laugh - and is so cute.

@MoonJelly A lot of ringers would normally go out on Xmas morning to ring at services, why would they be less keen this year?

LolaSmiles · 10/11/2020 07:40

I found the clapping each week to be performative nonsense, and an excuse for curtain twitches to have a good old moan (our local Facebook page was like a roll call of people saying 'everyone out tonight on Leaf Street' Hmm)

A one off bells on Christmas Eve for no other reason than it's a nice thing to do sounds good for those who want to be involved.

LolaSmiles · 10/11/2020 07:41

Horehound · 10/11/2020 07:41

Why would I?

Twilightstarbright · 10/11/2020 07:55

My bells arrived Grin

It's a semi circle toy from Flying Tiger in case anyone else needs some bells.

In my experience distinctly fewer than turn out on normal Sundays. There never have been enough to ring at every church that has bells as was suggested by the poster I was responding to. Why would that change this year?

OneLinePlease · 11/11/2020 09:26

I think it'll be lovely.

I'm a bit emotional thinking about it.

DD will be SO excited. And for people to be out and ringing and cheering "merry Christmas" will be wonderful.

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 11/11/2020 19:36

I think we will do this. We are about to lose a much loved, much wanted baby boy and as everyone knows "every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings". Our DS will be able to ring a bell for his little brother and for Santa.
