"A very silly idea, and will not be followed by anyone of intelligence"

😂😂😂😂 really? Intelligent people are never silly for their children? At Christmas time?

ToffeePennie · 04/11/2020 21:01

Yes I know about it.
There is also a “clap” for the armed forces on 11/11....
Both are as annoying as the clap for the NHS. 8pm was a ridiculous time to do it, I don’t have the inclination and I demonstrate my appreciation for these people by thanking them personally if needs be.

myhobbyisouting · 04/11/2020 22:31

@ToffeePennie I think actually that the Remembrance Day doorstep thing is a silence, not a clap.

The jingling is simply for the kids. The clap was, as you said, at the ridiculous time of 8pm and turned into something it should never have been.

A few 5 year olds excitedly jingling a bell in their garden at 6pm before bed on Christmas Eve is lovely. It's got nothing to do with the NHS clap nor the Remembrance Day silence.

myhobbyisouting · 04/11/2020 22:33

"I demonstrate my appreciation for these people by thanking them personally if needs be."

I don't think you can be personally thanking many WW1 veterans Hmm (but I will take tips if you know how I can catch Father Christmas so I can thank him)

Bookworming · 05/11/2020 06:53

A very silly idea, and will not be followed by anyone of intelligence.

Ho ho ho

Merry Christmas

Missanneshirley · 05/11/2020 06:59

Don't know if my kids will be interested..however I live on a streer where last Christmas i couldn't pick my neighbours out of a line up. When we went into lockdown one lovely lady put cards through everyone's doors offering help/support where needed. We now all chat a little bit on a street whats app, people have helped each other out over the months. So I'm looking forward to being able to come together and wave and chat a little bit, as it's been a lovely thing to get to know them all this year and i never see them otherwise cos of work

Bookworming · 05/11/2020 07:18

@Missanneshirley something good from lockdown! How lovely.

TheMandalorian · 05/11/2020 07:26

Is this as well as the doorstep Carol singing at 8pm every day of December? My neighbours are already planning that one. Bloody sociable gits.

What a lovely idea, so nice for the little kiddies, they have missed out so much this year, there will be mentally scarred for life over the trauma of covid, lets make this the best Christmas we can. I also plan on hitting a pan with a wooden spoon for the NHS at about 9.00pm Christmas eve to show my support.
We should all make this a new Christmas tradition

PhilSwagielka · 05/11/2020 09:33

Don’t we have the silence though? Why add the clap?
ToffeePennie · 05/11/2020 12:47

@PhilSwagielka apparently it’s a “thing”. I don’t like the idea at all.
It’s my brothers birthday, my dad is ex military. We hold our silence and carry on.
The silence is beautiful, expected and unexceptional.
As for thanking @myhobbyisouting I very simply say thank you during my silences each year, not through clapping (which actually can bring PTSD on in some veterans) and say thank you to the NHS after every treatment and procedure.
Father Christmas is so magical that when you leave a thank you note each year, of course he reads it and takes it back to the North Pole to his special “thank you room” where the notes get turned into paper chains!

PhilSwagielka · 05/11/2020 13:06

I prefer the silence as well. It's more...contemplative, I guess? I'm not being a miserable twat, I just don't get this whole 'clap for everything' idea when we already have a ritual for commemorating our war dead.

zukiecat · 05/11/2020 15:17

I'm Pagan, so the 25th of December is just that, another day of the year.

I celebrate Yule in my own way, doubt there'll be any rituals this year.

My DC are adults now and DD2 still lives with me, so I have a very quiet Christmas with her, as she doesn't share my pagan beliefs.

I still think ringing a bell sounds nice, and we'll probably do it, I have a replica Titanic Bell so will use that.

lyralalala · 05/11/2020 15:33

I'm actually loving this idea. Mainly because when DD3 (6.5yo) heard about it she asked why it was needed when Santa normally finds his way around just fine. She's at that point now where she's starting to disbelieve in Santa.

DH, without thinking, said it was because Rudolph would have a mask on this year so it would be more difficult. About an hour later she asked DH why Raven, our cat, didn't have a mask on and DH told her cats were exempt. She asked why and he said because cat ears make it too difficult to put a mask on as they are soft.

This was about 4/5 days ago and hearing DD pipe up "Daddy, what about X animal. Do they have to wear a mask?" about 25 times a day has been the highlight of my year because the "Why the fuck did I even say that?" look in DH's eyes is hilarious Grin

"As for thanking @myhobbyisouting I very simply say thank you during my silences each year, not through clapping (which actually can bring PTSD on in some veterans)"

@ToffeePennie as I said before, I think you've mistaken what they are planning. There is a "doorstep 2 minute silence" doing the rounds. I'm involved with the British Legion and we haven't heard of a clap.

Regardless, that has nothing to do with children ringing a bell

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 05/11/2020 20:44

Well l am going to get the biggest bell and ring it as long and loud as l can followed by a cry of 'bring out your dead'

So stick that up yer jumpers

myhobbyisouting · 05/11/2020 20:45

"Father Christmas is so magical that when you leave a thank you note each year, of course he reads it and takes it back to the North Pole to his special “thank you room” where the notes get turned into paper chains!"

Ok, and why should children have to follow your idea of Christmas magic and make believe rather than jingling a bell? Bells jingle throughout December almost everywhere you go. There is no need to try and make people feel small about giving their children some Christmas Eve fun.

myhobbyisouting · 05/11/2020 20:56

I do think it's important @ToffeePennie that you check your source as if you do actually have military links, you will know how important awareness, remembrance and the poppy appeal actually is.

To be saying that anyone remembering in a way other than the way you choose to is "annoying" and less "beautiful" than what you do is just helping to cause more damage to what we have left of this year's Remembrance Day. It isn't virtue signalling to hold a silence on your doorstep at home, as shoulder to shoulder with your neighbours as you can be. It is what the Royal British Legion are asking of you this year since we can't go to the cenotaph

Ringing bells on Christmas Eve
PinkiOcelot · 05/11/2020 21:05

I really don’t see the problem tbh.

flowerycurtain · 05/11/2020 21:18

It would be lovely if all the church bells could ring out at say 9am in xmas day even if we can't have services.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 05/11/2020 21:24

@flowerycurtain love that idea. I'm not religious but l love hearing the church bells. Would it work with social distancing though?

MitziK · 05/11/2020 21:26

@AlanThePig

I have a crab bell (if you know, you know)

I wont be on the doorstep.

All Hail!
