But the pubs will be shut so you can't get a lovely lunch whilst out

So it's going to be pack lunches again.

At least this time there won't be people complaining about people exercising in the Peak District like last time!

So it's going to be pack lunches again.

I hope we're not going to have endless threads again debating the rights and wrongs of pausing to eat a sausage roll during your outdoor excursion.

I don't know why, but this has had me chuckling away for several minutes now. Lockdown loco already!
myhobbyisouting · 01/11/2020 12:17

@RB68 I haven't got a backpack (which is all one word by the way). I put my packed lunch in a carrier bag. Does that make it a bag lunch?

FleecyMoo · 01/11/2020 12:19

Ha ha, a lot of you wouldn't survive for long where I live. We're on a windy hillside with absolutely no pubs or tea rooms for miles. Please do come and walk around here in the howling gales and sideways rain if you fancy it though. Sadly, there are no benches or car parks or anything else you might feel is essential but we do have ooodles of wind and rain so fill yer boots! You can even bring your packed lunches but perhaps something sloppy like soup in a thermos as sandwiches will get a bit mushy unless you've cut all the crusts off and can cram them in your mouth in one go.

starfro · 01/11/2020 12:19

I'll be driving to exercise every day, as I did all through the first lockdown. At this point we're where the rules were in late May, where you could meet a friend outdoors for exercise, and driving to a wood or beach was fine.

They have explicitly said this time that visiting beaches and the countryside is allowed.

They are actively encouraging outdoor exercise as they don't want people's mental health to suffer, unlike people on MN who love trying to make others miserable.

MitziK · 01/11/2020 12:20

DP's from a village on the arse end of Dartmoor. To get anywhere that actually counts as countryside to him would take too long, as there aren't that many places that are served by public transport, even if we did manage to have a day off at the same time. Would have done it this week, except for the fact that somebody I work with decided to wait until the results of their Covid test came through before mentioning to anybody that they'd had symptoms, so I'm confined to the house until I leave for work at 6.15 tomorrow morning.

The most we've got is potentially walking around the edge of a muddy patch of grass and dogshit four bus stops away in the dark after work.

QueenOfLabradors · 01/11/2020 12:22

By all means come for a walk out here. Just TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME WITH YOU!!!!

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 12:26

@QueenOfLabradors

That's very important.

As people have said, no doubt the wet weather of November will put people off. As will the lack of facilities.

It's not like April and May.

If you don't live in the countryside then you shouldn't travel to walk there. As a person who lives in the countryside I can tell you how much it annoys the locals. Range Rovers parked at crazy angles on grass verges, all the litter, footpath erosion, the countryside lanes also starting to resemble the tour de france route with the masses of the lycra clad descending

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/11/2020 12:27
@tenlittlecygnets sorry but yes you can meet a random friend each day of lockdown . As long as you are meeting them whilst you exercise out of doors and that you remain distanced .

This is completely apart from any rule about bubbles who are people you can still meet indoors
You can, but whether you should is a different question.

And limiting the number of different people you see over a short period of time has been in the guidelines for months.

@Dhalia443

Raincoat. Very useful. Unless you're a sugar mouse, presumably.

^yorkshire is currently being battered with 40mph wind and sideways rain.

That’s not a nice walk.

Also, decent waterproof stuff ie stuff that your whole family can wear every day in the rain, costs an absolute fortune. We’re an outdoorsy family and I’ve spent so much money on decent weatherproof kits so we can be out in all weathers. We also have a warm-ish house with plenty of room to dry the wellies and waders and puddlejumpers etc.

Being outdoors in November, in Scotland, is an expensive hobby!

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 12:34

But hey, some patronising bellend like @chomalungma says I can go for a walk. ODFOD

Do you want to know about my fucking life during the last 7 months?
No fucking friends
I had just started with a walking group and going to gigs with social groups.

All cancelled.
All my new social life gone.

I have no company apart from occasional work colleagues and DS.

I have been enjoying my walks in the countryside as it's my only sanity.

And I will be going out for solo walks because I have no friends, DS can't be arsed to go out and I need something to keep me sane.

So fuck off with calling me a bell end

OP posts:
Ignoringequally · 01/11/2020 12:34

Sadly, having lost my job due to Covid, I can’t afford decent waterproofs for my whole family of 5 (three children) this year.

wanderings · 01/11/2020 12:40

It's about people knowing their rights.
A hundred times louder, please.

And don't believe anyone who says "you're only allowed an hour's exercise". That was NEVER true.

And also, Saint Boris said: restrictions would be eased 2nd December. Do not forget that, even if Gove undermined him this morning. If Boris keeps that pledge, I might begin to have some faith in this government.

Next slide, please.

randomer · 01/11/2020 12:40

When does a furtive sandwich in a pocket become a packed lunch?

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 01/11/2020 12:41

I have been enjoying my walks in the countryside as it's my only sanity.

Good for you dear. But if you can’t see how making patronising and smug comments like “You can go for a walk” would piss people off - people whose lives and sanity YOU know nothing about, despite your expectations that others would consider yours - then I can only assume you’re being deliberately goady.

nosswith · 01/11/2020 12:43

Whilst they did not have the best ideas on much of the response, the Belgians said that for daily exercise you walked to it, not travelled by car, unless you had very small children or a person with disabilities. So none of this going to beaches or moors and leaving litter.

Orcus · 01/11/2020 12:43

To which the answer is, tough shit. The locals do not own the countryside. They, like the rest of us, have every right to be pissed off at people being dicks when they come. But not about people being there.

Hickorydickoryspock · 01/11/2020 12:43

we are very in to hiking and live in a rural areas so I'm relieved aboit this.
But not everyone enjoys walking or can walk very well, and im sad loads of people and kids are going to have a miserable month now.
I will be driving short distances to the start of hikes. Safer than walking thru the village.

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 12:45

You can go for a walk but you can't go to a pub on the walk.
Did you read the OP?

That's the point. You can go for a lovely walk - but you can't enjoy a drink afterwards.

And what is goady about saying you can go a walk in the countryside?

OP posts:
Devilesko · 01/11/2020 12:46

We are in a town and will be travelling to the next town to meet family at a country park.
Autumn and winter are lovely for walking and eat your lunch in the car if no picnic areas.
The cafe is closed but you can take a sealed mug or flask.

Saucery · 01/11/2020 12:47

I don’t do any of that. Even open gates with plastic bags. So I’ll walk where I like Smile
MaxNormal · 01/11/2020 12:47

I'll definitely be driving to go for walks, no way am I just doing the same dreary trudge that is accessible to me from my house. I'll not be breaking in laws by doing so.

Devilesko · 01/11/2020 12:49

Oh fuck off! Those of us who live in rural areas don't want to be overun with people coming for "lovely countryside walks

Do you not shop in towns or visit cities at all?
They get rather busy from country folk. Perhaps you could help by staying away and just buying online.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 01/11/2020 12:50

And what is goady about saying you can go a walk in the countryside?

Oh come on, are you really this clueless? People who’ve had plans wrecked, friends and relatives they’ll struggle to see, social interaction severely limited and goodness knows what else, and you genuinely can’t see how someone saying “You can go for a walk instead!” is not only incredibly poor consolation but staggeringly tone-deaf?
