to tell people that you can go for walks in the countryside which is lovely

But the pubs will be shut so you can't get a lovely lunch whilst out

So it's going to be pack lunches again.

At least this time there won't be people complaining about people exercising in the Peak District like last time!

You could buy you'd be a covid spreading twit Grin

We live in London and it would take us quite a long time to reach anything resembling countryside, it's a seemingly endless trawl through traffic congested suburbia between us and anything rural.

TheGreatWave · 01/11/2020 13:45

sit and stay

Makes it seem like I'm a dog.

For us, lockdown means much less traffic, which means me and ds 12, can safely cycle for exercise.

One of the few bright points of this whole grim situation.

@inkpaperstars London has canals, tucked away. Get an a-z and look for tow paths.

@Nomorepies

The only sanctimonious thing on this thread is the OP telling people they can go for a walk in the countryside and it's lovely. How patronising is that?! Sorry but it's goady. We all know the countryside is lovely. But just don't all come here at once- thanks! Guidance is should not travel unless essential.
"which" is lovely but you can't go for a pub lunch afterwards.

Read the OP.

The guidance, which is not legally binding anyway, in fact states that travel a short distance for exercise is permitted.
chomalungma · 01/11/2020 13:58

What would you do if a Police road block was set up, like there was around here during first lockdown? Flounce off hmphing "We can go where we like!" at them

That's an interesting question.

Ask them what the lawful reason for their road block is?

@Nomorepies

Grin Hilarious. You can't though can you- lockdown!

What would you do if a Police road block was set up, like there was around here during first lockdown? Flounce off hmphing "We can go where we like!" at them?

My first move would be to try and ascertain the legal basis for it. If it were in an attempt to try and prevent people doing things that aren't illegal, that's when I'd kick up a fuss. The nature of the fuss would depend on the circumstances: maybe a complaint, MP getting involved or a legal challenge.
myhobbyisouting · 01/11/2020 14:04

What are you going on about? Why do you feel you need to tell strangers on the internet that they can do a particular activity and that it's "lovely"?

That they have to have a sandwich and can't go to a pub.

I rarely walk in the countryside because I don't like it. I'd never want to walk and take a packed lunch with me, not my idea of lovely at all. I also can't remember the last time I went for a walk and had a pub lunch during it.

I'm not suddenly going to want to because you told me I can

toconclude · 01/11/2020 14:04

@slashlover

I get it, it's just advised to stop the spread, the rapidly rising case numbers and the deaths of old people and it's actually not illegal.

Carry on.

Yes, driving to an isolated country walk where you see no one will deffo lead to old people dying. It's magic or something. SIGH.

Not sure if you could buy a covid spreading twit. Is it considered an essential item or not?

myhobbyisouting · 01/11/2020 14:05

"Ask them what the lawful reason for their road block is?"

You question the police at roadblocks? Really?
@inkpaperstars London has canals, tucked away. Get an a-z and look for tow paths.
Actually it's best to avoid canals as towpaths are narrow and people living on boats need them for access

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 14:08

I'm not suddenly going to want to because you told me I can

That's fine then.

No one's making you.

Yeah, the whole ''go for a walk!" (especially a 'lovely' walk) got old round about mid-April.
Ignoringequally · 01/11/2020 14:09

@chomalungma

So it's lovely you can go for a walk but it's a shame that you can't go to the pub afterwards.
But everyone knows you can walk but not go to the pub... so was the point of the thread merely that it’s a shame?
chomalungma · 01/11/2020 14:09

@myhobbyisouting

"Ask them what the lawful reason for their road block is?"

You could do. We don't live in a police state. We police by consent.

And there are ways of talking to the police without causing an issue.

It is a shame.

A pub or a tea shop is a great thing to have on a walk in the countryside.

OP posts:
JamSarnie · 01/11/2020 14:16

Haven't read the full thread so apologies if this has already been covered but for those frothing away at people saying they cannot travel for exercise and will be breaking the law you might actually want to READ the guidance.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-national-restrictions-from-5-november

Have a look in the travel section before making up your own rules.

I've come to enjoy walking routes around our bit of London - I feel like there's not a front garden within a mile's radius that I don't know! The most recent step for me is to start discovering more about the history of my area. I've found three underground rivers that I hear through manhole covers, which I love to visit. Sathnam Sanghera wrote an interesting article in The Times about roaming London's streets, but when you're in suburbia it's not so interesting unfortunately. I need some ideas for researching themed walking trails if anyone has any suggestions.
