But the pubs will be shut so you can't get a lovely lunch whilst out

So it's going to be pack lunches again.

At least this time there won't be people complaining about people exercising in the Peak District like last time!

@Devillishlypicklypickles

I live in a village on Dartmoor, I'm just going to sit in my nice warm house and look at the countryside, and laugh at all the soggy people!!
When you walk in the rain, the best thing about it is getting back to a nice tea shop where the car is, getting your wet waterproofs off and having a lovely cup of tea with friends....

Oh, hang on.................

Raincoat. Very useful. Unless you're a sugar mouse, presumably.

^yorkshire is currently being battered with 40mph wind and sideways rain.

That’s not a nice walk.

RedskyAtnight · 01/11/2020 11:50

It's about people knowing their rights,

None of this is actually in law yet.

So when you say you want people to know their rights, you are basing this on your assumption as to what will come into law?

shinynewapple2020 · 01/11/2020 11:50

@tenlittlecygnets sorry but yes you can meet a random friend each day of lockdown . As long as you are meeting them whilst you exercise out of doors and that you remain distanced .

This is completely apart from any rule about bubbles who are people you can still meet indoors

Member869894 · 01/11/2020 11:51

So I can go for a walk with a different friend every day?

myhobbyisouting · 01/11/2020 11:51

YABU for being so condescending that you think I don't know this and for assuming I'd find this enjoyable just because you do Hmm

YABVU for saying "pack lunch"....it is a packed lunch

Jaxhog · 01/11/2020 11:52

Literally says an exemption is "to exercise outdoors or visit an outdoor public place."

That does NOT mean driving hours to a bit of the countryside. It means walking there or (at best) a very short drive.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/11/2020 11:53

In other news the water is wet.

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 11:54

Well that's a whole new thread.

I live near beautiful countrysides so will be enjoying the walks and go home for lunch.

cologne4711 · 01/11/2020 11:55

@Arosadra

And that exercise has to start and end at our home address.
that works well when you live on a busy 60 limit road with no pavements, doesn't it...

Just basing it on the guidelines that have been written - and the use of the words MUST and SHOULD

But are you "allowed" to sit on a park bench and eat a pack of crisps or is that murdering grannies?

I can't believe anyone thinks it's actually helpful to remind people that going for a walk is a possibility, given that it was pretty much the only thing you COULD do during April, May, and a good part of June. Hmm

ScribblingPixie · 01/11/2020 11:56

@Member869894

Yes, it seems we are being trusted to be sensible about the whole thing, which is positive. I have a single friend who is in a bubble with her elderly father so it's great that she can meet friends for a walk and a chat. I read in one newspaper that it's ok to sit on a park bench too which would stop those ridiculous local council signs and hazard tape situations.
unlikelytobe · 01/11/2020 11:57

For the bad users, well we got just loads of first time countryside walkers and sadly too many of them littered, also dumped bags of trash, shat where they liked, camped and picnicked where they liked and left bbqs and tents (and more trash....), called mountain rescue because they didn’t know the walks....

Yes, this is what bothers me. Some appalling behaviour but hopefully those who can't handle a few drops of rain and don't have the right gear will stay at/near home as it's getting wintery.

peonyred · 01/11/2020 11:58

It's important that people can drive to exercise. Many elderly people such as my mother don't have access to somewhere safe to exercise by their home and a short drive to the countryside does them the world of good. She can't walk very far, but half an hour in the fresh air gives her some focus to the day and lifts her spirits. The alternative is walking down a road which may be busy with cars or pedestrians and makes her anxious.

I definitely think the fairweather people will stay at home.

I went for a walk in the week and was a bit disappointed to find that there were masses of people there (I know, I know, I was there too) but only a few yards down a footpath everyone melted away. People only went to the immediate bit around the car park and (yippee!) did not venture any further.

RB68 · 01/11/2020 12:06

Pack lunch - a lunch to go in your back PACK

tenlittlecygnets · 01/11/2020 12:08

@Northernshepherd - I read this to mean the same person: Individuals can meet one person from outside their household in an outside public space

Not a different person each day! Pleased to be told I'm wrong.

Itisbetter · 01/11/2020 12:08

Should/must?? Seriously?

You SHOULD change your pants every day. You obviously don’t HAVE to especially as no one has had the audacity to say you MUST. However if you are trying to avoid infection which course of action is wisest and why do you think you were advised that you should change your underwear daily?

Don’t drive anywhere if you can avoid it for a few short weeks. That SHOULD help slow the spread of the virus.

SendHelp30 · 01/11/2020 12:11

@12frogsincoats amen to that! We took the DC to forge dam yesterday. Surprised we didn’t get blown to Ecuador.

Ultimatecougar · 01/11/2020 12:13

During the Welsh lockdown we have been specifically prohibited from driving to exercise unless there is a disability that requires it ( such as needing to exercise somewhere flat). Picnics also not allowed. This is law, not guidelines.

I do hope we are not going to see people from England driving to exercise in Wales now.

oneglassandpuzzled · 01/11/2020 12:15

Come and enjoy it but please take your litter home. I don’t want to be picking up your discarded water bottles at the moment and it may come as a surprise to learn that if locals don’t clear up after you nobody will. No council services out here.
BornOnThe4thJuly · 01/11/2020 12:15

@12frogsincoats

The weather up in Yorkshire atm certainly isn't allowing for nice countryside walks.
Same in The Lakes, if it does stop raining for a bit, everywhere is flooded anyway and it’s blowing a gale. I hope people don’t all descend on The Lakes again, it’s been so busy lately, as busy as the Summer holidays.
