To think lock down will be much longer than four weeks

Looking at the reality of where transmission takes places and what's actually been shut - there's no way this lockdown will be sufficient. At the end of four weeks schools will shut early for Christmas, when deaths reach a frighteningly high level.
Back in March we locked down when there had been 21 deaths only and it still took seven weeks of a full lockdown to reduce numbers to a level where anything was eased off. I know the Government won't want to scare people further at this point, but does anyone else agree?

It does feel that the landmarks of autumn are all being bracketed by this lockdown - announced on Hallowe'en, into effect on Guy Fawkes, and not lifted until after the start of Advent

Liketoshop · 02/11/2020 17:37

I'm fed up we have to do a lockdown as we are in tier one, only one covid patient currently in hospital and because higher up in England has higher prevalence the south are now having to suffer too. Andy Burnham prattles on about a divide which is nonsense ... Its demographics, geography and abiding by the rules as much as possible. If the south becomes badly affected it won't be because we locked down! Really fed up. I work on front line in NHS so I've had enough. 😤

Scoobydoobydo · 02/11/2020 17:39

@mustfly pretty sure the Death rate was higher than that when we went into lock down

Liketoshop · 02/11/2020 17:39

Colleges and schools will no doubt be badly affected when half the teachers and lecturers start self isolating for one reason or another. Pity majority of NHS staff feel too guilty to try the same

Crunchymum · 02/11/2020 17:41

I reckon they'll keep it until Mid December and then announce a 4 week closure of schools etc (so extend the Xmas break a week either side)

I am no fan of Boris, or this government, but it is a difficult situation. Schools and universities should close. A total lockdown of four weeks. Numbers are dropping in the tiers first targeted.

Mere1 · 02/11/2020 18:10

How insulting to teachers etc who are no less dedicated than NHS staff. If they are tested and told to isolate, they are being responsible.

Quartz2208 · 02/11/2020 18:11

It does seem to be put to Parliament as a 4 week lockdown - this one will only be for a month. Anything else will have to go through Parliament

He definitely said seek to ease today

nosswith · 02/11/2020 19:24

After hearing today's statement and the non-answers which followed, I still think that shops will re-open on 3 December, but not sure about other things that are being restricted.

I still cannot see why gyms, outdoor tennis courts and golf courses cannot remain open.

bp300 · 02/11/2020 19:59

A tactical lockdown until just before Christmas would create some pent up demand in January and hide any negative effects of a No Deal Brexit.

FelicisNox · 02/11/2020 20:11

Absolutely. This is to see if the trend will remain high with schools open. If it does they will shut everything.

This is also a test to see how many bend the rules going forward. To gauge the public feeling.

MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 20:29

i think the second lockdown itself will be for the four weeks.
Many MPs will not only want their Christmas. They will want their pre Christmas too. Like pre Christmas drinkies, informal get togethers etc. And they will want to be able to do this without being watched like a hawk by the press. Which is what will happen if MPs attempt to do these things during a lockdown. And i very much doubt they will want to sacrifice these.
I bet they are silently cursing Cummings, Ferguson , Farrier et al because they have made being watched by the press even more likely

safariboot · 02/11/2020 20:36

YANBU.

The pessimistic end of predictions is that with schools still open, cases might only drop by 20%, which is effectively nothing. Even at the optimistic end of predictions, if December returns to October levels of spread then the results of November are pretty much undone before the end of the year.

If the "tier" system of regionalised restrictions returns, tiers need to be based on growth not on absolute numbers. Leaving a region in "tier 1" because cases are low, when the R number is still above 1, is like ignoring a fire in your wastebasket because it's small.

The Self-Employment Income Support Scheme Grant Extension provides critical support to the self-employed in the form of two grants, each available for three month periods covering November 2020 to January 2021 and February 2021 to April 2021

Violinist64 · 02/11/2020 20:39

I think it will probably be extended but hopefully not country wide. My part of the country is about the lowest and, while we are complying, it was not necessary to lock us down. If they reopen the country in tiers it will make more sense.

riceuten · 02/11/2020 23:11

Let's be completely honest here. The decision to come out of lockdown will be based on the level of public support there is at the time for the government.

Lardlizard · 02/11/2020 23:15

I can’t see it being 4 weeks at all
I think two months min 😰😰

KatherineJaneway · 03/11/2020 05:55

I still cannot see why gyms, outdoor tennis courts and golf courses cannot remain open.

Me either. It was fine to exercise in the evening during first lockdown as it was light and the weather was usually reasonable. Now it is dark early and, unless you have the luxury of flexing your day to be able to exercise during the day, no one really wants to go walking / running in the dark / cold / rain.

Applebloss0m · 03/11/2020 06:04

No way. Things will be dire by then. It will be further lockdown with school closures as staffing etc will be so hard hit by then.

They might just say do what you want over Xmas! But in terms of things opening etc I’m sure it will only get worse

WhentheDealGoesDown · 03/11/2020 06:13

I think until March but it will lift for non essential shops just in December with probably a relaxing for up to week for everyone (UK) at Christmas, ie rule of 6 excluding children and travelling allowed across UK. Schools shut for month over Dec/Jan.

If you're told to isolate then you must isolate, nhs or not. Don't see why threads always have to be nhs vs teachers. We are all doing our bit.
Localocal · 03/11/2020 07:20

I don't understand why they have made it four weeks anyway. They should run it to December 16 when the schools close and we can swap open schools for limited opening of hospitality, retail and leisure. Then if necessary reverse it again after Christmas.

Lardlizard · 03/11/2020 07:50

dontatmebully

If they reopen everything in December so we go out and spend spend spend like good consumers for Christmas, then all mix with our families and extended families on Christmas day so Boris Johnson gets to claim that he 'saved Christmas', then yes, the lockdown will need to be reinstated on Jan 1 and will last for several months more.

I could see this happening too the gov will be desperate for us all to spend our money
