Morrisons Discount for school staff

To think Morrisons are wrong to offer 10% discount to school staff from Monday? What about nursery staff, university staff, college staff, and all the other essential workers, who haven't been on full pay all through the pandemic. Never mind those who have lost their jobs and businesses.

Some people are unbelievable as if you would really begrudge any key worker getting a discount in a shop.

Pumpkinsarepurple · 31/10/2020 15:58

This is fantastic news, it will help go towards the bread and butter for toast, fruit for snacks and socks that I buy to help my class out.

AnoDeLosMuertos · 31/10/2020 15:58

@CatsAndEyeliner

So because they can’t help everyone they shouldn’t help anyone at all?
This ^. The politics of envy is a sad thing indeed.
RonaLisa · 31/10/2020 15:59

They can't give everyone a discount or they would be out of business

And we can't have anyone put out of business by Covid or lockdown, can we?

Oh, wait...

PaperMonster · 31/10/2020 16:05

I think it’s great that they’re doing this but I find it a bit odd that they’ve left out early years and FE tbh.

Sheknowsaboutme · 31/10/2020 16:05

Discount for him/her but not for you. It sucks. Were all working hard and sometimes struggle. It would be nice to bring down the price of food for everyone.

roundtable · 31/10/2020 16:07

They haven't left them out. They can get the discount too.

Op yabu and it's really odd that it's fine for NHS staff to you. What's the difference?

IKEA888 · 31/10/2020 16:18

I'm nhs staff and used it once and got abuse from the customer behind me.
I go to Aldi now

Musicalmistress · 31/10/2020 16:21

@PaperMonster they've added FE & early years staff now in an update to the terms & conditions

TheWitchCirce · 31/10/2020 16:25

I'm a teacher and I won't use the discount because I am currently financially secure enough not to need it. I will however switch to using Morrisons wherever possible in appreciation of this gesture.

spanieleyes · 31/10/2020 16:32

An option would be to use the discount you are given to purchase one of the foodbank parcels Morrisons have available. Win, win!

emilyfrost · 31/10/2020 16:34

YABU. What exactly is the issue here? Discounts can and should be applied without people going “but what about X workers?”

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 31/10/2020 16:35

Early years and further Ed now included!

Rosebel · 31/10/2020 16:38

Compared to nursery staff teachers earn a fortune (not sure about college or university lecturer's) so it does seem unfair. Also unfair on support staff in schools who don't earn as much as teachers.
Obviously the supermarket can do what they like and it's a nice gesture but there are so many people much worse off.

saraclara · 31/10/2020 16:44

@Rosebel the offer includes EVERYONE in the school Support staff, site agents, dinner ladies etc.

It's a thanks to the people who, while not allowed to wear face masks, have to work closely and in confined spaces with 30+ (and possibly 100s) children/teenagers.

Childminders, while doing a great job, are able to control their environment, and they only work with a very small and consistent number of children. It's really not the same as the staff in a nursery or school who are in contact with many.

PaperMonster · 31/10/2020 16:46

Oooh @Musicalmistress Thanks - hadn’t realised that!

feelingverylazytoday · 31/10/2020 16:50

@Tigerbalmtonic

Well I'd rather they made a generous donation to food banks and helped those who really need it.
Morrisons have been extremely generous towards food banks. www.morrisons-corporate.com/media-centre/corporate-news/morrisons-to-help-restock-britains-foodbanks/ my.morrisons.com/community-and-charity/unsold-food-waste-programme/ In fact I think they've been one of the best companies throughout lockdown, very supportive towards the community. Offering a discount to teachers is a lovely gesture and I'm sure it will be appreciated.
Obi73 · 31/10/2020 16:50

It’s lovely that Morrisons recognise the efforts school staff went to throughout lockdown because just incase you didn’t know we weren’t closed!
This was my lockdown as a school leader:
Opening everyday to keyworker children and ensuring they and their families were as safe as possible
Making sure my staff and their families were safe
Delivering work packs to homes
Sending work electronically
Delivering food to families weekly and daily
Offering a food bank to the local community
Running errands for those shielding
Giving up the Easter and May holiday without any remuneration or days off in lieu
Making sure our vulnerable families were safe from domestic abuse
Writing risk assessment after risk assessment to keep staff, children and the community as safe as possible
Shopping weekly for anti-bac, cleaning and food for children
I really don’t think 10% is going to change my life but what hurts is the fact that there are people out there that have no idea the heartache end stress caused to schools and their communities during lockdown.

IcedLimes · 31/10/2020 16:52

I hope it's some small comfort to school staff that nearly three quarters of people voting are glad the Morrisons are showing appreciation to them

Rainuntilseptember · 31/10/2020 17:19

Have to say this thread hasn't been half as bad as I thought it would be. It's nice to know not everyone hates us.

ColaandBru · 31/10/2020 17:28

Usually these things are gimmicks to a point with policies such as this designed to bring people into the shops who wouldn't go in otherwise. Then they'll drop the discount and hope school staff stick with them. If they have more than a 10% markup on their purchase prices they will still make some money from this. Pulling middle class markets into their shops who purchase on whims rather than using a list to the last penny is exactly the kind of shopper Morrisons need to attract long term and the market they need to move into in a bigger way, especially now that Aldi etc are continuing to expand.

SentientAndCognisant · 31/10/2020 17:34

@Rainuntilseptember, aww I agree the teachers get an undeserved pasting on mn

Sh05 · 31/10/2020 17:47

I suspect alot of teachers will use their discount to better their classroom provisions as well.
Teachers deserve alot more than this 10percent discount but it's a start atleast especially if the whole country is going into lockdown but teachers,(as well as many others) are still going to have to go into work and put themselves and their families at repeated risk

commandatori · 31/10/2020 17:51

Mad seeing PP saying “glad it’s for everyone in the staff room who are paid significantly less than teachers Hmm” like yes obviously it should be for all school staff. But the reason people like TAs are paid less is because a) you don’t need any qualifications to do it and b) the role is significantly easier. You can walk into an agency with no experience and become a TA - I know, because I did it and I was a TA for three years. It’s an INCREDIBLY important job and should be higher paid (and I’m not saying that because I’m biased) but obviously teachers are going to earn a lot more because our hours are longer, we have SO much more responsibility and it’s also a job that requires at least a degree which gives you QTS, if not a postgrad qualification or other training year. It’s not unfair that the pay is higher for teachers.

commandatori · 31/10/2020 17:55

I don’t want anyone to think I don’t feel that good TAs aren’t totally invaluable - they absolutely are and you could NOT run a school without them. But teachers shouldn’t feel like they can’t use a discount because they make more than them.
