Morrisons Discount for school staff

Tigerbalmtonic · 31/10/2020 13:29

To think Morrisons are wrong to offer 10% discount to school staff from Monday? What about nursery staff, university staff, college staff, and all the other essential workers, who haven't been on full pay all through the pandemic. Never mind those who have lost their jobs and businesses.

OP posts:
CatsAndEyeliner · 31/10/2020 13:46

And ignoring the other staff in the school who earn significantly less than a teacher.
It’s for all school staff; cleaners, admin, premises managers, etc, included.

Audreyseyebrows · 31/10/2020 13:47

Also if you are okay for nhs staff to get it why not teachers?

DNAshelicase · 31/10/2020 13:47

MN gets a bad rep for teacher bashing but it’s really nice to see the vast majority of posters welcoming the nice gesture. Teacher bashing arseholes like the OP are in the minority.

LittleMissNaice · 31/10/2020 13:48

DSs teacher spent half term on isolating after catching covid from a pupil. He deserves a lot more than a 10% discount.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 31/10/2020 13:48

Are childminders included?

Whammyyammy · 31/10/2020 13:48

Seen a FB post about people working from home being eligible for an increase in how much they can earn without being taxed via the HMRC site.
Loads of people kicking off on it, saying that its greedy and not fair....

I meant the OP, not the poster (sorry).

No... they are not teachers or school staff.
CatsAndEyeliner · 31/10/2020 13:51

@MitziK ah gotcha Smile

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 31/10/2020 13:53

I realise that Hallie but someone said nursery staff are included too. Childminders have worked through with key worker children too so wondered how they’d made the differentiation.

maverickallthetime · 31/10/2020 13:54

MN hate teachers. I'm looking forward to using the discount as it's been stressful and shit compared to my friends who are saving money working at home with no travel costs, safe in their homes and able to manage childcare and cook tea whilst working. I'm in full PPE as I work with special needs children and my head could explode from sorting risk assessments and ensuring my TAs are safe.

I do realise it's been shit for those who have lost jobs etc and something needs to be done to sort this problem too.

SaltyAndFresh · 31/10/2020 13:55

Yes OP, what is it about education staff and their 10% discount that you disapprove of, given that you've said yourself that you're ok with NHS staff getting it?
Northofsomewhere · 31/10/2020 13:57

Most supermarkets facilitate food bank donations in store anyway and some help with donations, particularly at Xmas. I know the Asda I work at has a community relation colleague who regularly organises food bank donations on behalf of the store.
Why shouldn't a private business offer discounts to any sector of people they feel deserving? And why do you think teachers in particular are undeserving?

Bearfrills · 31/10/2020 13:58

Well I'd rather they made a generous donation to food banks and helped those who really need it.

Morrisons already do donate to foodbanks, they set aside £10 million worth of ambient stock specifically for foodbanks.

They also donate to community projects and local charities, our local Morrisons store provided all the food and decorations for DD's playgroup Christmas party last year as well as a selection box for each child.

The already do

What is your issue with teachers getting help? You realise they’d also be using their pay to sub kids who don’t get breakfast and lunch right?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 31/10/2020 14:00

School staff are working with no PPE or SD and you would begrudge them a discount from one store? Maybe the understand their workers are there because school staff are looking after their children.

Well no one is going to know why they didn’t include childminders on this thread are they...

Childminders don’t work in a school setting which is where Morrison’s are offering their discount. Just be happy for all the school staff.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 31/10/2020 14:03

Yep, our local Morrisions also made a substantial food donation to the local effort to ensure all our local kids could eat during half term.

Mrsjayy · 31/10/2020 14:03

I am involved in a community charity and Morrisons is very generous with food donations , so your comments about them helping food banks yada yada isn't really relevant. I don't really understand what about me whinges can't you just be content that supermarkets offer " something "

Hopeisnotastrategy · 31/10/2020 14:04

@waitforitwaitforit

Have you even read it? The discount also applied to university and nursery staff, as well as support and office staff in schools. There's little more frustrating than some eejit who gets on their high horse based on a tiny fraction of a story.
This, with knobs on.
BigButtons · 31/10/2020 14:05

About time we were recognised.
So next week -as the country most like huddles in its homes to protect itself from Covid -it will be unprotected business as useful for me and the rest of my colleagues in education.

Jeezoh · 31/10/2020 14:09

No-one can do anything nice without someone moaning it doesn’t go far enough!

Vivana · 31/10/2020 14:09

Happy for school staff to get it they been through so much and all keyworkers jobs have.

spongedog · 31/10/2020 14:10

I was very pleased to see it included all school staff. Most support staff are predominently women on very part-time contracts (term-time and then even more part-time) on a very low FT salary. Every little helps (to quote another food retailer)

BiBabbles · 31/10/2020 14:10

I don't see anything wrong with this & struggle to see why it's an issue just because it doesn't include everyone (though as others said, it includes more than school staff though appears to be relying on ID and for in-shop purchases which may be an issue for some.

I think many people, even those 'really in need' would prefer to be able to buy what they need at a more affordable price than rely on a food bank, but they like some other supermarkets support those and other redistribution schemes.
