Suck it up. You voted for them. No one made you.

Everyone is entitled to have a moan, but seriously, WHY WHY WHY did you ever vote tory thinking they'd got your back?!?!

OP posts:
wigglerose · 28/10/2020 09:14

I don't think it's working class people that voted Tory in the north to be honest.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/10/2020 09:15

Oh, one man? One Northern man on the telly? How convincing.

I wonder how many well reasoned Northeners were rejected by the journalist when wandering around looking for an idiot Northerner to offer up to the aggrieved Labour supporters?

Liquorishlucy · 28/10/2020 09:16

@rosie1959 many of the things we take for granted were initiated by a labour government, trouble is people have a short memory - surestart, free tv licences for the over 75s, free local travel for over 75s, nmw, devolved power, equalised aged of consent for gay men, implemented human rights act, good friday agreement, banned hand guns. So to make a blanket statement that labour have never done anything positive is just factually incorrect.
@Livelovebehappy yes we have some 'thriving cities', 'quirky towns' maybe, but equally there are some sh*tholes that have been starved of investment for years, labour aren't entirely free of guilt for this, but things sure got worse under the tories.Sadly people underestimate the extent of cuts to funding from central government which hit already cash strapped predominantly labour voting northern areas the hardest. Yes some labour councils were inept and complacent but when you've had millions cut from your budget, something has to give...

Notverybright · 28/10/2020 09:17

@GrolliffetheDragon

Because labour had done so fucking much for them the past 20-30+ years they had held those seats

South Wales rather than North of England, but I certainly saw improvements in my area after 1997. Of course according to some if Labour helps poor areas it's because they're bribing voters... The Tories of course really care.

Yes I’ll never understand the vilification of new labour here, my area, my ability to afford things, funding of public services were all much better in the late 90s early 2000s.

People who slag off Blair seem to forget that the Tory party also voted for war with Iraq.

The way the Labour Party have been blamed for the financial crash is also a bit bizarre to me.

DBML · 28/10/2020 09:17

@sally067

I’d rather take my chances with austerity than socialism. Obviously I’d love a middle ground party, so I didn’t have to vote for either.

Notverybright · 28/10/2020 09:17

@whydontkidscomewithauserguide

Speaking on behalf of my fellow northern England residents, I say fuck off.
Grin this too.
CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 28/10/2020 09:18

I didn’t vote Tory. I have done once in my life, after Blair and his warmongering and weapons of mass destruction fiasco. Of course, then we had austerity so, I regretted it massively. I am also a Remainer. I can understand fully why “The North” did what it did. The Tories promised to “level up” and to a forgotten people, that meant a great deal. The “Get Brexit Done” was the final nail in the coffin for Labour in the north. Stupidly, many people believed all that guff on the side of a bus. They swallowed the “sunlit uplands” nirvana too. I think many many older voters were tired of living in areas where they felt they didn’t recognise their own language often. My gran would have been the same...complaining about too many foreigners. I think the lure of living and working within the freedom of the EU wasn’t enough for the many who felt constrained by a “foreign” govt. Boris et al, with their sovereignty and their points based immigration came along just at the right time. A bit like Hitler, in 30’s Germany.

I fear for our country now. I cannot see that we have much to be proud of. Those who wanted their freedom from Brussels will have it, but at such a cost. And the architects of the debacle? They’ll move on and retire to their country homes in Tuscany. Thing of Tommy Robinson and Stanley Johnson. They won’t be eking out an existence in good old Blighty, that’s for sure.

Amortentia · 28/10/2020 09:18

@bravotango

'The North' or 'Northern England' isn't one homogenous place. Not all 'Northerners' voted blue. Lots of 'Southerners' did vote blue (and do plenty of moaning themselves).

HTH

Nice to see the N/S divide alive and well and perpetuated by Southerners on this thread

As a Scot if find the north of England thing very confusing. Manchester seems to be in the north but to me that only a couple of hours outside London and just slightly above the middle. It's pretty far south in the UK to me. 😂
Pluckedpencil · 28/10/2020 09:19

I sincerely hope next election, the Labour party make it clearer who they represent, i.e.... we are funded by X, y and z, and that means we stand for X, y and z. In clear, plain English. That would be a start. And then maybe make the despicable Tory corruption this year absolutely crystal and visible.

ShizeItsWeegie · 28/10/2020 09:22

I agree with a PP. If only there was a proper halfway house party we could vote for. There's a lot of people that are Labour voters at heart but Corbyns Govt seemed too L wing and still residing in 1981

A lot of people are landlords on a small scale or accidentally and Labour would have crushed them, that sort of thing. A middle ground party that understands how the majority of us live would storm it.

We had a Labour MP who was replaced by an “unknown” Tory, last December. He is utterly useless. He voted against free school meals last week. Even stood up in the House to give a little speech.

I’ve no idea why he was voted in. His Facebook/Twitter pages are reminiscent of a sixth former trying to join in the big boy debates and missing the point, each and every time.

KaptainKaveman · 28/10/2020 09:29

@Miljea

I read the OP and, like many, thought 'this won't go well' 😂-

But, I understand the sentiment.

I cannot fathom why any traditional Labour voter in a Thatcher decimated, chronically under-invested, poorly educated, austerity riven north of England town would imagine in their wildest dreams that any Tory would have their interests at heart.

How much history do you need?

Agreed.

Let's face it, many people in the North, South and everywhere voted Tory because they swallowed the 'reclaim our borders, reclaim your jobs, give the NHS Xmillion ££ per week' lies peddled by Boris, Nigel and co.
Well, I hope those people now realise what fools they were.

buggeroffvirus · 28/10/2020 09:30

-LolalovesLondon- Oh my Goodness I had not seem those clips. It's the little things in life that make us realise that we are being governed by a bunch of Norman Wisdoms. My father would be turning in his grave if he knew I had voted Tory.
They are my favourites now{Big grin]

ZoeTurtle · 28/10/2020 09:31

@overnightangel

Anyone who votes Tory has had a morality bypass and doesn’t care about other people, this is just a fact. If you vote Tory, you’re a cunt , it’s really that simple
Either that or they're too stupid to know what they're voting for.
buggeroffvirus · 28/10/2020 09:32

My grin isn't working but you know what I mean, I feel like a right Norman now. It's karma

The irony is strong in this one.

THIS kind of messaging, this ridiculous polarisation and simplification of people's morality, is what puts people off you. You are kind and moral are you, with that attitude? Don't make me laugh.

I often wonder if people would say this kind of thing in real life to someone's face. Anyway, reported.
BuntyBonus · 28/10/2020 09:32

@ssd do you live in the north?

attillathenun · 28/10/2020 09:32

Where do you live OP? Are you one of these who thinks northerners still need a leg up from their back breaking toil down the mines? We aren’t all one homogeneous group of people you know, we are allowed to have different political opinions.

Do you really think lefties like Jeremy Corbyn and the other labour middle class socialists really understand what it’s like for real working class people?? Get real. What the fuck does someone like Sir Keir Starmer know about that with his background. People voted conservative because the Labour Party had turned itself into an absolute joke before the last election.

And if you think any politician or political party actually cares about you, you are fucking deluded.

jessstan1 · 28/10/2020 09:33

Not all Northerners voted Tory. It was Brexit that caused previous Labour voters to change - being scared of 'foreigners' changing 'our way of life'. We get some of that attitude down south as well in some places, especially semi rural areas. East Anglia too.

Hopefully that will change at the next election.

However we mustn't forget we already had a Tory government when BoJo was voted in and we've had plenty in the past.

Now I disagree, I'd say if you are so intolerant you can't handle anyone else having views different to your own you're a cunt 🤷🏼‍♀️

Can no one accept that labour also did fuck all for anyone, their leaders are just as feckless as Boris but are in the position now to simply critique because they don't have to do anything. Labour has done shit all, conservatives have done shit all and no other party has a chance of gaining enough power to do anything but sure bitching on the internet will definitely help the situation.

amusedtodeath1 · 28/10/2020 09:36

Yeah, because only people in the North voted Tory right? Please stop with your bias and bigotry.

LadyCatStark · 28/10/2020 09:38

I didn’t so can I complain?

We’re not one homogenous group. Mumsnet really need to do something to stop all this North bashing, if people were blaming certain ethnic groups their posts would be deleted for racism but it’s apparently fine to bash half the country.

Have all the people who are complaining about us even been to the north or spoken to a northerner?

user1469544430 · 28/10/2020 09:41

@Amortentia haha totally! My aunt from the midlands snorted when I said I was moving to Leeds: 'but that's nearly in Scotland' - I was like... right... a 4/5 hour drive is 'nearly' in Scotland... that would mean we are 'nearly' in Somerset too! There's a whole heap of England above Manchester / Leeds / Liverpool doncha know!

Oh and on the original post, this The North bullcrap is so tiresome. If you look at the numbers it wasn't as huge swing as you'd think. There are some tiny margins. And YES The North is not a huge mass of lumpen proletariat with flat caps and whippets - there are areas like York and Harrogate.... contrast with areas of the south like St Leonards on Sea and Portsmouth.
