To not let neighbour park on our drive

Neighbour 2 up approached DH the other day to ask a favour.

He’s getting a new car and doesn’t want to park it on the road in case it gets damaged. There’s plenty of parking and it’s a fairly quiet road but he wants to park it off road. Can’t park on his own driveway as his wife’s car is there. Wants to use ours.

Was I unreasonable to say a flat out no?

Re the point about theft

I also wonder if there’s any insurance issues with it being parked in your drive.

Damn cheek to ask, why would you buy that huge thing with nowhere to put it?

If you feel pressured to explain yourself, I’d say about the theft worries. In fact I’d say it anyway so he doesn’t park there when you’re out or something.

JMG1234 · 27/10/2020 20:40

I'm all for good neighbourly relations but this is one of the cheekiest requests I've ever heard. He has a drive, he has the choice which of his portfolio of cars he parks on his hallowed space.

As for buying a Hummer, words fail me though at least it makes my embarrassingly large car look quite modest by comparison. Is he some kind of local celeb..?!

Newfornow · 27/10/2020 20:42

I think he has told his insurance company it is parked on the drive to reduce the cost. Any theft, if not on the drive he’s up shit creek. My insurance stipulated my car must on the drive between x and x time when I am at home.

Sexnotgender · 27/10/2020 20:43

Definitely not a celeb 😂

Well obviously it’s a ridiculous car. And a ridiculous, entitled request even if you were best mates.

I’d say sorry, we would worry in case it got scratched etc on our drive. And it’s such a beautiful car, we’d be worried about burglaries.

captainpantbeard · 27/10/2020 20:45

Has your DH actually told him flat out ‘no’ or is it just going to turn up on your drive one day cos he’s a CF?

keeprocking · 27/10/2020 20:46

A few years ago there was an event on at the Chapel down the road and parking was a nightmare. I saw a couple of old dears from our Church and said Park on our drive, just leave us space for whoen we get back, it's a wide drive. When we returned she'd parked almost diagonally, no way could we get in, we never offered again! BTW, I'm 70+ so I can use the phrase 'old dears'!

HuggedTheRedwoods · 27/10/2020 20:47

I wonder what he's told his own insurance company? I expect parking on the road will increase his premium, especially if those sort of things are higher theft risks.

Good for you saying flat out no, absolute recipe for disaster from the inconvenience, you getting blamed for any damage or attracting the attention of lowlifes.

Redburnett · 27/10/2020 20:48

I am doubtful this exchange ever happened, but if it did why did you feel the need for a bunch of random internet strangers to tell you what you already knew?

keeprocking · 27/10/2020 20:51

@WhySoSensitive

Charge him an extortionate rent.
No, if you charge him rent you accept some responsibility I believe.
fruitbrewhaha · 27/10/2020 20:52

"No, because I don't want people to think I'm the type of twat that drives a hummer"

I have a drive big enough for 6 odd cars, it would never cross my mind that my neighbours would think, oh, fruit has room, lets just park there.

Soozikinzii · 27/10/2020 20:55

As others have said drive costs a fair bit to maintain ours is the concrete cobbles type which you have to have treated every so often just had it done and that was £450 - just for the treatment!

No way

Bearbehind · 27/10/2020 21:04

There’s nothing wrong with him asking to use your drive

Of course there is!

People shouldn’t expect to be able to buy a house with a small drive, then buy a fuck off huge car and then expect to park it on a neighbour’s drive

Only a CF would think otherwise

Just say No. His monkey, his circus.

Hummers weigh a fucking ton

Lolwhat · 27/10/2020 21:27

Our neighbour tried to do the same thing, when they built our houses they messed up the drive numbers, we’re 51 but our drive number is 43, the whole street decided to ignore these numbers and park outside our own houses because it just made no sense, neighbour is getting a new car and says we will be needing our drive back now (everyone has two spaces and they already have 2 cars), told them where to go🤣🤣

Sweettea1 · 27/10/2020 21:31

I'd stay no but I've got children an would say they might bump it or scratch it. What happens if something happens while its on your drive he will probably hold you responsible not worth taking the chance.

QueenArseClangers · 27/10/2020 21:32

YANBU

Have you seen how much those monstrosities cost? If he’s getting a brand new one it’ll be cracking on for £90!

If he can afford that he can afford somewhere to store it!

PanamaPattie · 27/10/2020 21:53

I thought you were taking the piss when you said he had a Hummer. Why does anyone need such a vehicle - unless they have to go off-roading to get to Tesco.

CausingChaos2 · 27/10/2020 21:58

Of course yanbu to refuse, but if I had a large driveway I would say yes and charge him to rent the space.

Lou197 · 27/10/2020 22:05

You have done the right thing. We had a neighbour who asked if he could park on our drive from time to time. It ended up being all the time and in the end we had to get solicitors involved.

Nope, not taking the piss.
