Dear vipers, I am going to ditch my husband's name and I have a claim to either Scott or Stone. I want to know which one of two sounds more glam, more posh.

Scott of course has a lot of associations, from Buccleuch down to Ronnie, Stone to me brings to mind Patsy, (not a bad thing).

Going through the separation roller coaster right now, and I desperately need cheering up. (NC for this, natch)
YABU - Wha hae!
YANBU - Rock and roll, baby!

Stone rather than Scott

napody · 26/10/2020 15:49

@doublehalo

Or you could go really posh and be St.One
Yes! If St John is 'sinjin' you could withering tell people 'its pronounced 'sinwin'. Or something.

I prefer Stone (or did until someone made the Fr Stone connection), but they're both nice names.

OwlOne · 26/10/2020 15:52

Hyacinth's own birth name was Walton apparently. I just looked that up on wiki

I don't know what I'd pick if I were doing this. My mother was really emotionally neglectful, my father was an enabler, my x abusive. I think I'd look to people i admired if I were going to change names.

augustusglupe · 26/10/2020 15:53

Definitely Stone, I love it!

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/10/2020 15:53

Just give yourself a random surname. I’m going for “de la croix” if I ever change mine.

BuntysTwinkle · 26/10/2020 15:55

Stone

OwlOne · 26/10/2020 15:55

I always liked the sound of Gillespie
But unfortunately it means Bishop's Servant.

Not sure I like that.

Palavah · 26/10/2020 15:59

I rather like 'Scone' but would have to bw pronounced Scoon like the Stone of Scone.

Otherwise Scott.

SurreyHillsGirl · 26/10/2020 16:00

Stone just sounds so boring to me. Scott is better. Neither are amazing.

CovidClara · 26/10/2020 16:02

Never mind nice, you need down to earth

Ramsbottom
Birtwhistle
Hancock
Spratt
Laycock

Fungster · 26/10/2020 16:03

@amatsip

The “naice” words refers to a mn thread a few years back about a shopping list with “naice ham” which was meant to equate to finest type ham.
@Nickysofttouch & @notacooldad as above, it has been on MN for a very long time. There is still a tradition that if you find a shopping list left behind in a trolley you post the contents of the list. It literally said "naice ham" on the list.

There are several things that just stick. Depending on how long you have been on MN depends what ones you know. Like cancel the cheque, are you on glue, Pom Bears, river of sweetcorn, and the absolute best one ever is Mexican House Thief which is in classics and deserves a read, in fact a lot of fantastic threads are in there.

What about a name of the moment?

Covid?

OwlOne · 26/10/2020 16:06

What about Freestone?

I like that. Reclaiming stone. Giving it your own touch. As a free woman.

...
I know that and obviously whoever wrote the list couldn't spell 'nice'. People from Liverpool pronounce it a bit like "naice" but wouldn't write that unless they were semi literate.

It also got very tedious very quickly when it was constantly used.
Very dated now.

aprilanne · 26/10/2020 16:18

What were you born just use that one

shinynewapple2020 · 26/10/2020 16:18

They both sound very similar kinds of name to me

SwedishEdith · 26/10/2020 16:20

Joan Stone is great!

Translate Stone to another language and be Roca or something.

ThunderSkies · 26/10/2020 16:22

Stone, but I’d rather go for a surname like Lawrence.

AnotherEmma · 26/10/2020 16:22

Both surnames are perfectly fine so there isn't much in it. If they are both names from your family I'd choose the one that has the most meaning to you. As I feminist I'd be keen to choose a surname from the female line (mother's or grandmother's surname) but you might have another preference for other reasons.

ThunderSkies · 26/10/2020 16:23

But there's a difference between nice and niace Wink

CountFosco · 26/10/2020 16:39

Stott Scone (to rhyme with moon obviously, like the Castle).

Go for Heavy Stone - Tungsten?

Especially if one's baking is anything like my mother's was.

Although that would also leave the way open for Wolfram. Which would be awesome.
