Dear vipers, I am going to ditch my husband's name and I have a claim to either Scott or Stone. I want to know which one of two sounds more glam, more posh.

Scott of course has a lot of associations, from Buccleuch down to Ronnie, Stone to me brings to mind Patsy, (not a bad thing).

Going through the separation roller coaster right now, and I desperately need cheering up. (NC for this, natch)
YABU - Wha hae!
YANBU - Rock and roll, baby!

@unmarkedbythat

Invent a new one and be the fabulous Ms Scottstone?
That just makes me think of Scotstoun a small area of Glasgow 😂
Bettina500 · 26/10/2020 14:53

Neither are what I would call 'naice.'

It depends on your first name though, my first name sounds awful with both of those but one more so than the other.

Fink · 26/10/2020 14:54

As someone with both a first and last name that have multiple spellings, I'd say avoid Scott like the plague because you'll spend the rest of your life saying 'with two tees'.

Cassilis · 26/10/2020 14:55

Bit much now, hiding.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 26/10/2020 14:56

Scoffington-Scone?. 😂😂. Bloody brilliant, this gets my vote.

2bazookas · 26/10/2020 14:57

@MikeUniformMike

How about a compromise, and change it to Scone.
Or Doughnut. Spelled D' Onut to be extra celtic.
LavaCake · 26/10/2020 14:59

Scott is much better imo. Something about ‘stone’ just seems a little dour.

Bluesheep8 · 26/10/2020 15:04

Scottston?

goldenharvest · 26/10/2020 15:06

Scott for me. Stone sounds a bit stolid

Serin · 26/10/2020 15:12

I would go with Scott.
The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Stone" is the convicted murderer, Michael.
The next is the language course "Rosetta Stone".

Zaphodsotherhead · 26/10/2020 15:20

Araminta Stone = great
Joan Stone = nope.

nancywhisky · 26/10/2020 15:24

Stone brings to mind Father Stone

GroundAlmonds · 26/10/2020 15:26

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Stone" is the convicted murderer, Michael.

Yeah, but he will eventually be cleared. That’s the next big miscarriage of justice case.

Remona · 26/10/2020 15:28

Stone is most definitely the better of the two, but it really depends on your first name. Scott is surely the more common of the two. If you're going to change, make sure you change to something you're 100% happy with.

I'm currently in a similar predicament having decided to finally change my name. My maiden name is Smith, so I am NOT going back to that. I'm left with the surnames of three grandparents and I veer from one to the other depending on what day of the week it is/what frame of mind I'm in/what I've had for my tea/how much wine I've drunk.

Anotheruser02 · 26/10/2020 15:29

Stone

Honkandhoot · 26/10/2020 15:30

Bucket. Surely that's the naicest name to be had?

OwlOne · 26/10/2020 15:34

Father Stone! He was the really boring one wasn't he?

Imagine if you had to pick a sur name from all of the sur names on Father Ted. I'd still pick Stone I think.

nosswith · 26/10/2020 15:35

One considers that if one lives in Devon one would not use Scott, in case one met someone who thought you were related to Norman. Otherwise one does not favour one over the other.

MintyCedric · 26/10/2020 15:40

Love this post.

I also had a claim to Scott when I changed my name, along with two other 'family' names...I went with one of the others (not Stone!).

But why be a Stone when you can be a Teacake?

I bloody loved that book as a kid and downloaded it on Audible a couple of years ago at the age of 40-something!

BarbiesBitch · 26/10/2020 15:42

Scott - reminds me of the Julia Roberts character Anna Scott from the film Notting Hill; she was a movie star.

jessstan1 · 26/10/2020 15:42

Stone makes me think of Sharon or Rolling, both of which I like but they are hardly 'posh', whatever that is.

You are being unreasonable for misspelling 'nice'; it has no 'a' in it.

Kpo58 · 26/10/2020 15:43

Go for Stone. I mean why would you want a man's name as a surname anyway?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/10/2020 15:44

What is your Christian name? That will make a difference, surely.

Serin · 26/10/2020 15:45

Fr Ted names!
I'd go Sensini Grin

vidalbaboon · 26/10/2020 15:45

@ThePluckOfTheCoward
